"QUINOA MAMA" WAS A PRE-COLUMBIAN GODDESS OF GRAIN WHO WAS INVOKED BY TH PERUVIAN INCAS AS THE START OF THEIR PLANTING SEASON. THE INCANS CALLED HER MOTHER GRAIN. "QUINOA," A GRAINLIKE SPECIES OF "GOOSEFOOT, "WAS ONE OF THEIR MOST IMPORTANT CROPS; IN FACT, FOR 6,000 YEARS IT HAS BEEN A STAPLE IN THE DIET OF THOSE WHO LIVE IN THE ANDES OF PERU, ECUADOR, AND BOLIVIA.

DURING THE HARVEST OF THE "QUINOA "CROP, GIRLS AND WOMEN MADE SPECIAL DOLLS IN HER HONOR FROM THE LEAVES OF THE PLANT ARE COLLECTED. THE "CORN-DOLLY "IS DRESSED IN TRADITIONAL PERUVIAN COSTUME AND SAVED UNTIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR WHEN IT IS RITUALLY BURNED TO ENSURE A BOUNTIFUL CROP AND HARVEST.
