"KAPO" IS THE GUARDIAN OF THE NIGHT. SHE IS THE SISTER OF "PELE", THE GODDESS OF VOLCANOES, AND WAS BORN FROM THE EYES OF "HAUMEA" ; IT IS SAID THAT SHE GUIDES THE EARTH'S CHILDREN AND KEEPS THEM SAFE IN THE DARKNESS. SHE IS ALSO A GODDESS OF FERTILITY, SORCERY AND DARK POWERS WHO CAN ASSUME ANY SHAPE THAT SHE WILLS, BUT SHE IS S MOSTLY ASSOCIATED WITH EELS, BIRDS, AND THE ALMOST GONE "HALA PEPE" TREE WAS SACRED TO HER. SHE CAN BE TERRIFYING, BEAUTIFUL, OR BOTH. AND, BECAUSE SHE HAS MORE ANIMAL ASSOCIATIONS THAN THE OTHER GODDESSES, SHE REPRESENTS THE ELEMENT OF THE ANIMALS.

INDEED, "KAPO" SEEMS TO HAVE LIVED A DOUBLE LIFE WHOSE AIMS WERE AT CROSS PURPOSES WITH ONE ANOTHER--AT ONE MOMENT SHE WAS VIEWED AS AN ANGEL OF GRACE AND BEAUTY, AND IN THE OTHER, A DEMON OF DARKNESS AND LUST. HER FULL NAME IS "KAPO-ULA-KINA-U" WHICH MEANS THE "SACRED NIGHT STREAKED WITH THE DARK," AND BECAUSE SHE HAD AN EVIL NAME, AT TIMES SHE WAS LED TO COMMIT ACTIONS DEEMED WORTHY ONLY OF A DEMON OF LEWDNESS. SHE IS MOST FAMOUS FOR HER FOR BEING ABLE TO DETACH HER VAGINA. IN FACT, IN ONE" PELE "STORY, IT WAS "KAPO" WHO SAVED "PELE" FROM FORCIBLE RAPE BY SENDING HER VAGINA ACROSS THE SEA SO THAT THE PIG GOD WOULD CHASE AFTER IT AND FORGET ALL ABOUT PELE.

AT TIMES SHE IS PORTRAYED AS A SYLVAN DEITY; THAT IS, A SPIRIT OF THE FOREST, AND IT IS IN THIS ROLE THAT SHE WAS WORSHIPPED BY THE HULA FOLK AS ONE OF THE PREEMINENT SPIRITS OF HULA DANCING WHOSE ROOTS LIKE IN SACRED RITUAL. SOME LEGENDS CREDIT HER AS THE HULA'S INVENTOR. SHE IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH REPRODUCTIVE ENERGY, HERBAL MEDICINE, AND WHAT TODAY IS CALLED CHANNELING.
