THE ANCIENT PERUVIANS WORSHIPPED THE SEA AS WELL AS THE EARTH...THE INLAND FOLK REGARDING IT AS A MENACING DEITY WHILE THE PEOPLE WHO LIVED ALONG THE COAST REGARDED IT AS BENEVOLENT. SHE WAS KNOWN AS "MAMACOCHA" OR AT OTHER TIMES, " COCHAMAMA"; SHE WAS THE "INCAN" GODDESS OF THE SEA AND THE PROTECTOR OF FISHERMAN AND SAILORS. SHE WAS BELIEVED TO BE A DESCENDANT OF THE MOON. HER NAME LITERALLY MEANS "MOTHER SEA."

IT WAS FROM "MAMACOCHA" THAT EVERYTHING CAME TO BE... INCLUDING THE ANIMALS AND THE INDIANS THEMSELVES; SHE WAS THE GREAT MOTHER OF ALL MANKIND. IN GENERAL, SHE WAS MORE IMPORTANT TO THE FISHING GROUPS WHO RESIDED NEAR THE OCEAN BECAUSE OF THEIR CLOSENESS TO THE WATERS AND DEPENDENCE UPON THE SEA FOR THEIR LIVELIHOOD. TO SOME TRIBES, SHE WAS THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF ALL WATER...INCLUDING RIVERS, STREAMS, IRRIGATION WATER,AND RAIN. SHE IS A SOURCE OF HEALTH AND PROVIDER OF FOOD. SHE IS SOMETIMES SHOWN AS A WHALE GODDESS.

THE INCA REVERED THE PACIFIC OCEAN AS A GODDESS, AND EVEN THOSE WHO LIVED IN THE ANDEAN HIGHLANDS BROUGHT THEIR CHILDREN TO BATHE IN THE OCEAN...THUS ENSURING THEIR WELL-BEING WITH "MAMACOCHA." IN PERU, WATER

WAS REVERED THROUGHOUT THE LAND... RIVERS AND CANALS, FOUNTAINS AND WELLS... AND MANY SACRIFICES WERE MADE TO THEM, ESPECIALLY OF CERTAIN SEASHELLS WHICH WERE THOUGHT TO BE "THE DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA, THE MOTHER OF ALL WATERS." THE TRADITIONS OF THE INCAS POINT TO AN ORIGIN FROM LAKE TITICACA, AND OTHER TRIBES FABLED THEIR DESCENT FROM FOUNTAINS AND STREAMS
