Goddess Ashman Image
"ASHNAN "(LADY OF ABUNDANCE) WAS THE SUMARIAN GODDESS OF GRAIN, LIKE MOST OF THE GRAIN GODDESSES, SHE WAS A VERY OLD DEITY WHO APPEARED SOMEWHERE AROUND 2900 BCE. ASHNAN HAD A VERY STRONG PRESENCE IN THE ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIAN WRITINGS. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ENLIL, THE GOD OF THE AIR.

ASHNAN IS BOTH AN AGRICULTURAL AND A DOMESTIC GODDESS. SHE IS VIEWED AS THE PROTECTOR AND NOURISHER OF THE FERTILE LANDS AND PROVIDES HER PEOPLE WITH GRAINS AND VEGETATION. SHE IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A YOUNG MAIDEN WITH EARS OF CORN SPROUTING FROM HER SHOULDERS.

ANOTHER OF HER ROLES WAS TO PROVIDE FOOD AND CLOTHING TO THE GODS OF MESOPOTAMIA, BUT WHEN THE HEAVENLY CREATURES WERE FOUND UNABLE TO USE HER PRODUCTS, HUMANKIND WAS CREATED TO TAKE THEIR PLACE.
