" AYIZAN" IS REGARDED AS THE SPIRIT OF THE FIRST, OR ARCHETYPAL "MAMBO" OR "PRIESTESS" OF THE "VOODOO "TRADITION, AND AS SUCH IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH PRIESTLY KNOWLEDGE AND MYSTERIES, PARTICULARLY THOSE OF INITIATION. HER SACRED TREE IS THE PALM. HER NAME MEANS "SACRED EARTH" OR "SACRED LAND". SHE IS THE WIFE OF" LOKO", THE PATRON OF HEALERS AND PLANTS, AND SHE, HERSELF, IS THE PATRONESS OF THE MARKETPLACE AND PUBLIC SPACES WHERE PEOPLE GATHER TO CELEBRATE THIS GODDESS.

AS THE SPIRITUAL MATERNAL PRINCIPLE, "AYIZAN" CONTROLS THE RITES OF SPIRITUAL BIRTH. SHE IS A POWERFUL GODDESS WHO TEACHES HER WORSHIPPERS THE JOYS OF DEVOTION AND OFFERS THEM PROTECTION AGAINST SORCERY AND MALEVOLENT MAGIC. A STRONG MOTHER-FIGURE, SHE IS REPUTED TO BE A POWERFUL HEALER WHO IS ASSOCIATED WITH CLEANSING AND EMPOWERING.

SHE IS OFTEN SEEN AS AN ANCIENT DARK GRANDMOTHER, HER FACE COVERED IN PALM FROUNDS, WHO WEARS A WHITE DRESS WITH HUGE POCKETS IN WHICH SHE CARRIES SMALL CANDIES AND CHANGE FOR THE LITTLE CHILDREN. AND, ALTHOUGH SHE IS OLD, SHE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP PEOPLE WHO HAVE PROBLEMS.
