"MAYAHUEL "WAS AN ANCIENT MESOAMERICAN AGRICULTURAL GODDESS ASSOCIATED WITH THE "MAGUEY "(AGAVE) CACTUS, THE PLANT FROM WHICH TEQUILA IS MADE, FERTILITY, CHILDBIRTH, AND DRUNKENNESS. SHE WAS KNOWN AS "LADY MAGUEY" BECAUSE OF HER ASSOCIATION WITH THE AGAVE PLANT. THE WIFE OF THE AZTEC MEDICINE GOD, "PATECATL, MAYAHUEL" WAS ALSO A GODDESS OF WEAVING AND WAS ASSOCIATED WITH HEALING. "MAYAHUEL" IS REPRESENTED AS A WOMAN WITH AGAVE BRANCHES COMING OUT OF HER BODY IN SIGN OF FERTILITY AND A JADE RING PIERCING HER NOSE.

SHE WAS THE EMBODIMENT OF FEMALE PRODUCTIVITY AND REPRODUCTIVITY WHO NOURISHES AND SUSTAINS THE WORLD. SHE GIVES FREELY OF HERSELF IN ORDER THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE AND THRIVE. IN MYTH, MILK WAS HOLY FOOD THAT FLOWED FROM THE BREASTS OF MOTHER GODDESSES, AND THE "MAGUEY" GODDESS WAS SAID TO HAVE A HUNDRED BREASTS THAT EMITTED A MILKY SAP; THEREFORE, SHE COULD FEED MANY OF HER PEOPLE.

THE PULQUE DRINK FROM THE "MAGUEY" PLANT WAS INTOXICATING. THIS DRINK WAS SACRED TO THE AZTECS AND USED IN MANY RITUALS. THE "MAGUEY "PLANT WAS SPINY, AND PRIESTS WOULD USE THESE SPINES TO COMMIT RITUAL SUICIDE.
