"SSATET" (SATET, SATHET, SATIT, SATI) WAS THE ARCHER GODDESS OF THE NILE. HER NAME MEANS "SHE WHO RUNS LIKE AN ARROW". SHE WAS A FERTILITY GODDESS AS WELL AS A GODDESS WHO PURIFIED THE DEAD WITH HER WATER. SHE HAD THE POWER TO PURIFY THE DECEASED AND TO HELP WITH THEIR REBIRTH IN THE AFTERLIFE. DEPICTED AS A WOMAN, SHE IS OFTEN SHOWN WEARING THE WHITE HORNED CROWN OF UPPER EGYPT AND A PAIR OF LONG ANTELOPE HORNS. SHE IS SOMETIMES SHOWN CARRYING A BOW AND ARROWS, BUT MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, SHE WAS SHOWN CARRYING A SCEPTER AND THE ANKH SYMBOL. SHE WAS BELIEVED TO BE THE WIFE OF KHNUM, ONE OF THE MOST ANCIENT GODS OF EGYPT, AND THE MOTHER OR SISTER OF ANGET. OTHERS SAY SHE WAS ORIGINALLY THE DAUGHTER OF RA AND WAS RELATED TO OSIRIS.

AS A WARRIOR GODDESS, SHE PROTECTED THE PHARAOH AND WAS THE GUARDIAN OF THE SOUTHERN BORDERS OF EGYPT. BUT, HER MOST IMPORTANT ROLE WAS OF THE GODDESS OF INUNDATION...THE YEARLY FLOODING OF THE NILE RIVER...AND IT WAS DUE TO THIS LINK WITH THE FLOODING THAT SHE WAS ALSO KNOWN AS A FERTILITY GODDESS. BY RELEASING THE SILT, SHE ALLOWED THE CROPS TO GROW AGAIN AS WELL AS GIVE THE LIFE-GIVING WATER BACK TO THE EGYPTIANS EACH YEAR. EVENTUALLY, SATET WAS LINKED WITH HATHOR AND BECAME, NOT JUST A GODDESS OF THE FLOOD, BUT ALSO OF HUMAN FERTILITY AND LOVES AS WELL.

SATET'S TEMPLE IN ELEPHANTINE WAS ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL HOLY PLACES IN EGYPT. THE CENTER OF HER WORSHIP WAS IN THE ISLAND OF SAHAL, TWO MILES SOUTH OF ELEPHANTINE.

BY THE WAY, IF YOU DON'T HEAR FROM ME UNTIL MONDAY, NOT TO WORRY. I SEEM TO HAVE PICKED UP THE GOOGLE VIRUS ON MY HOME COMPUTER. HOPEFULLY, IT WILL BE RECTIFIED OVER THE WEEKEND BECAUSE I WILL MISS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU.
