"VELLAMO" IS KNOWN IN FINNISH FOLKLORE AS THE GODDESS OF THE SEA; SHE IS OFTEN DEPICTED AS A MERMAID WHO RULES THE OCEANS AND THE RIVERS. HER NAME IS DERIVED FROM THE WORD "VELLOA "WHICH MEANS "TO ROCK ONESELF "OR "PROTECTOR. "SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS COLD-HEARTED, SHE IS THE GREAT SEDUCTRESS, WITH A TALENT FOR MANIPULATING BOTH MEN MEN AND GODS INTO ILLICIT AFFAIRS. SHE IS THE POWER OF THE SEA AND THE MISTRESS OF FISH, THE PERFECT SYMBOL OF PRIMEVAL NATURAL WATER. IT IS SAID THAT THIS WATER NYMPH HAS A LONG HAIR FLOWED ALL THE WAY DOWN TO HER WAIST.

VELLAMO IS THE WIFE OF AHTI, A RATHER BROODING OLD MAN, THE CHIEF WATER GOD OF THE DEPTHS. HE AND VELLAMO LIVE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA IN HIS CASTLE CALLED "AHTOLA "WHERE SHE TENDS TO MYSTERIOUS CROPS UPON THE OCEAN'S FLOOR. A TEMPTRESS, VELLAMO IS SAID TO APPEAR FIRST AND FOREMOST TO MEN, AND IF SHE CAUGHT BY A FISHERMAN, SHE MIGHT VERY WELL TRY TO SEDUCE THE MAN TO BECOME HIS WIFE.
