"GESHTINANNA "IS THE SUMARIAN GODDESS OF THE AUTUMN VINES. IN MYTHOLOGY, SHE IS KNOWN AS "THE LADY OF THE GRAPE; "SHE IS THE GODDESS WHO INCARNATED FROM THE VINE. GESHTINANNA IS THE DAUGHTER OF ENKI AND NINSUN AND THE SISTER OF DUMUZI, HUSBAND OF INANNA.

AS THE STORY GOES, WHEN INANNA RETURNED FROM THE UNDERWORLD AFTER HER UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPT TO DETHRONE HER SISTER, SHE FOUND HER HUSBAND DUMUZI, WHO HAD INVENTED BEER, DRINKING WINE WITH GESHTINANNA. IN ANGER AT WHAT SHE INTERPRETED AS A CARNAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PAIR, SHE CHOSE DUMUZI TO TAKE HER PLACE. GESHTINANNA WAS SO GRIEF-STRICKEN OVER THE LOSS OF HER BROTHER THAT INANNA TOOK HER TO SEE HIM. SHE PLEADED THAT SHE BE ALLOWED TO TAKE HER BROTHER'S PLACE FOR HALF OF THE YEAR...AND SO IT WAS SHE WAS BANISHED TO THE UNDERWORLD FOR THE SIX MONTHS OF WINTER AND DUMUZI FOR THE SIX SUMMER MONTHS. THE MYTH ITSELF IS MEANT TO EXPLAIN WHY THE ANCIENTS DID NOT PRODUCE BEER AND WINE WERE AT THE SAME TIME OF THE YEAR.
