Goddess Nerrivik Image
IN GREENLAND SHE IS CALLED THE "MOTHER OF THE SEA", "BUT TO THE "ESKIMOS" SHE IS SIMPLY "NERRIVIK", THE ESKIMO GODDESS OF SEA, AND MOTHER OF ALL SEA CREATURES; THEY CALL HER THE "OLD WOMAN OF THE SEA." IN HER HOUSE AT THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA, SHE DWELLS, GUARDED BY A TERRIBLE DOG. SHE IS BELIEVED TO BE THE SOURCE OF ALL LIFE. SHE RULES OVER ALL SEA CREATURES AND THOSE WHO HAVE PASSED BEYOND THE VEIL OF LIFE, INCLUDING HUMANS. HER IMAGE BEARS COMPARISON TO INUIT ACCOUNTS OF THE GODDESS "SEDNA". SHE WAS CALLED "FOOD DISH" REFERRING TO HER ASPECT OF PROVIDER AND NOURISHER.

THE POLAR INUIT CONCEIVED OF "NERRIVIK" AS A GIANT WOMAN WHO DID NOT ALWAYS LIVE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. ONCE SHE WAS A MORTAL WOMAN WHO LIVED UPON THE LAND, BUT HER FATHER CHOPPED OF HER HANDS AND SHE DROWNED. GAME ANIMALS BECAME SCARCE WHENEVER SHE WOULD CONFINE THEM TO A WATER BASIN IN HER HOUSE, AND SHAMANS WOULD THEN JOURNEY DOWN TO HER AND COMB HER LONG HAIR TO RELEASE THE BOUNTIFUL FISH AND SEA CREATURES WHO HAVE GOTTEN CAUGHT IN HER LONG LOCKS.
