"URD" IS THE NAME OF THE ELDEST, AND PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT, OF THE NORNS...THREE SISTERS WHO WERE THE NORSE GODDESSES OF FATE. HER NAME IS DERIVED FROM THE GERMAN, "UR", WHICH MEANS PAST, PRIMORDIAL, OR VIRGIN. THE SISTERS REPRESENTED TIME, SO "URD", THE "NORN" OF THE PAST WAS DEPICTED AS AN ANCIENT CRONE WITH WHITE HAIR WHO WAS CONSTANTLY LOOKING BACKWARDS....TOWARDS THE PAST. SHE PERSONIFIES ALL THINGS THAT HAVE GONE ON BEFORE, IN THE PAST, WHICH HAS CAUSED BOTH THE PRESENT AND WILL CAUSE THE FUTURE. SHE WAS THE GUARDIAN OF THE SACRED "FOUNTAIN OF TIME" WHO SPINS UPON HER WHEEL THE THREAD OF FATE GENERATED BY US IN THE PAST. "URD" WAS CONSIDERED AS BENEVOLENT.

BENEATH ONE OF THE ROOTS OF THE "YGGDRASILL" LIES THE "WELL OF URD." THIS IS THE SPRING OF DESTINY AND THE HOME OF THE "NORNS". THIS IS WHERE THE "AESIR "GATHER TO HOLD THEIR COUNCILS AND TO GAIN THE INSIGHT OF THE "NORNS". ODIN" HIMSELF FREQUENTLY RODE DOWN TO THE SACRED FOUNTAIN TO SEEK HER AID, FOR THEY GENERALLY ANSWERED ALL HIS QUESTIONS, MAINTAINING SILENCE ONLY ABOUT HIS OWN FATE AND THAT OF HIS FELLOW GODS.

Deity Leshachikha Image
"LESHACHIKHA" IS A RATHER TEMPERMENTAL FOREST DEITY IN EASTERN EUROPE. A FOREST GODDESS, SHE USUALLY APPEARS AS A WILD ANIMAL OR AS A LEAF. SHE GUARDS THE LAND AND ANIMALS OF THE WOOD, AND PUNISHES THOSE WHO ABUSE THEM. SHE IS THE WIFE OF THE FOREST GOD, "LESHII," AND THE MOTHER OF HIS PROGENY, THE "LESHONKI." SHE IS SAID TO DIE IN OCTOBER AND IS REBORN IN SPRING. BOTH THE SHE AND HER HUSBAND LIKED TO ABDUCT CHILDREN WHO WANDERED INTO THE FOREST.

She is very territorial and fiercely protects Her lands, often leading those who entered their forests astray or trying to drive them off. In this manner, She teaches us of reciprocity and honoring the lands. To avoid their spells, one needed to disrobe beneath a tree and then put their garments back on backwards, PLACING YOUR SHOES ON THE OPPOSITE FEET, AND THE SIGN OF THE CROSS OFTEN WORKS.

The Feast Of Spring

The Feast Of Spring Cover
Called Feriae Sementivae, this one or two day Roman festival was moveable, but generally began between January 24 and January 26. Sacred to Tellus, and Ceres, this festival was for the protection of seeds, either those sown the previous fall, or those to be sown in the spring. During Sementivae plowing oxen were decorated with garlands, and puppets or masks were hung from tree branches.

This is an excellent time to begin to think about planting a "Witch's Garden" and to do spellwork involving seeds. Spiritually and metaphysically, this is an optimum time to sow the internal seeds of what we hope to bring forth as the year unfolds.

Greek Nymph Maia

Greek Nymph Maia Cover
A Nymph is any member of a large class of female nature entities, sometimes bound to a particular location or landform. Nymphs often accompanied various gods and goddesses, and were the frequent target of lusty satyrs. Nymphs are frequently associated with the superior divinities, the huntress Artemis, the prophetic Apollo, the reveller and god of trees Dionysus, and with rustic gods such as Pan and Hermes.

The Greek nymph Maia was a daughter of the Titan Atlas and Pleione. Maia was one of the seven mountain nymphs known as Pleiades (Taygete, Elektra, Alkyone, Asterope, Kelaino, Maia, and Merope). Maia was the mother of Hermes (Roman Mercury) with Zeus and was associated, by the Romans, with the goddess of spring, Maia Maiestas.

From the Homeric Hymn to Hermes: "Muse, sing of Hermes, the son of Zeus and Maia, lord of Cyllene and Arcadia rich in flocks, the luck-bringing messenger of the immortals whom Maia bare, the rich-tressed nymph, when she was joined in love with Zeus, -- a shy goddess, for she avoided the company of the blessed gods, and lived within a deep, shady cave. There the son of Cronos used to lie with the rich-tressed nymph, unseen by deathless gods and mortal men, at dead of night while sweet sleep should hold white-armed Hera fast."
