"UZUME" IS THE JAPANESE GODDESS OF LAUGHTER; SHE IS A GODDESS OF JOY AND HAPPINESS. HER NAME MEANS "WHIRLING HEAVENLY WOMAN", AND SHE HAS BEEN CALLED THE "DAUGHTER OF HEAVEN". UZUME IS THE EMBODIMENT OF ENERGY AND ACTION; IT IS SHE WHO GIVES BIRTH TO LIGHT AND TO HOPE. BELLS AND DANCING ARE SACRED TO HER. UZUME IS REMEMBERED FOR THE ROLE SHE PLAYED IN BRINGING AMATERASU, THE SUN GODDESS, OUT OF HER DEPRESSION.

ACCORDING THE THE LEGEND, AMATERASU, DEPRESSED OVER SOME BAD BEHAVIORS OF HER BROTHER, SUSAWANA, THE STORM GOD, HID HERSELF IN A CAVE AND REFUSED TO COME OUT; AND WITH THE LOSS OF THE SUN,THE EARTH WAS COVERED WITH DARKNESS AND INFERTILITY. THE GODS AND GODDESSES SAW THAT THE WORLD WAS BEGINNING TO WITHER AWAY AND KNEW IT WOULD DIE WITHOUT SUNLIGHT. DESPERATE NOW, THEY CALLED ON UZUME TO LURE AMARSATA FROM THE DARKNESS.

IT DIDN'T TAKE UZUME LONG TO COME UP WITH A PLAN. THE FULL-FIGURED GODDESS TURNED OVER A LARGE TUB AND STOOD UPON IT; SHE THEN BEGAN A FRENZIED SEXUAL DANCE...HER FEET DRUMMING ON THE TUB...AND BEGAN TEARING OFF HER CLOTHING. THE OTHER GODS AND GODDESSES ROARED AND LAUGHED WITH DELIGHT AT HER ANTICS AND JOINED IN WITH HER BOISTEROUS SINGING AND DANCING. AMATERASU COULD HERE THE LAUGHTER AND BECAME CURIOUS. SHE LEFT THE CAVE, AND UPON SEEING THE OTHERS LAUGHING AND HAVING SO MUCH FUN, SHE ABANDONED HER GRIEF AND EMERGED FROM THE CAVE; THUS, SUNLIGHT RETURNED TO THE WORLD.

DURING TIMES OF PAIN, WE OFTEN FIND OURSELVES RESTING IN THE DARK RECESSES OF THE SYMBOLIC CAVE OF DEPRESSION...AND THE LONGER REMAIN THERE, THE HARDER IT IS TO CLIMB OUT. THIS IS WHEN WE NEED TO INVOKE UZUME WHO TEACHES US THAT WE CAN FIND HEALING AND WISDOM IN HUMOR. WHILE YOU MEDITATE ON THE GODDESS OF MIRTH, FEEL HER FEET DRUMMING ALONG WITH THE BEATING OF YOUR HEART. SEE HER LAUGHING, HER MOUTH OPEN WIDE, HEAD THROWN BACK IN ABANDON. HEAR HER VOICE COMING FROM DEEP WITHIN...FOR THE AZUME IS ALREADY WITHIN YOU...JUST WAITING TO INSPIRE YOUR EMERGENCE FROM THE CAVE.

Goddess Cliodhna

Goddess Cliodhna Image
CLIODHNA (pronounced KLEE-nah) is the Irish Goddess of beauty. She was one of the Tuatha de Danaan, and became known as the Fairy Queen of Munster. She fell in love with a mortal named Ciabhan and ran off with him. One day, while Ciabhan was off hunting, Manannan mac Lir, God of the sea, sent a wave that carried her back to the land of fairy.

In the 15th century, the Irishman Cormac MacCarthy called on Cliodhna to give him her assistance with a lawsuit. Cliodhna appeared to Cormac and told him to kiss the first stone that he saw in the morning on his way to court. He did so, and was so persuasive in court that he won his suit. He then took the stone and hid it away in the walls of his castle, where it remains to this day--the Blarney Stone.

Cliodhna, whose name means "the shapely", was also known as CLIODNE, CLIDNA, CLIONA, or CLEENA.

Rawhead And Bloody Bones Aka Rawhead

Rawhead And Bloody Bones Aka Rawhead Cover
For a supposedly made up creature thousands of children have feared him and still do. Said to be as tall as a two story building, he is a terror to behold. His raw head is flayed open and often looks more like a boar's head than a human one. Or sometimes you can see the bloody veins with no skin at all.

His bloody bones are thick and massive. They need covering just like his head you see. And it needs to be very young and tender flesh to cover him. Otherwise he is sore and in a worse temper than usual. Bad children can expect a raw bloody hand to smash through a window. Or perhaps from underneath the bed. He is so very clever. And magical. He'll always find a way in.

There's no escape from him and adults somehow always know about children who went missing. Of course he serves a useful purpose. Scared children do not wander outside at night where very real danger exists. They are also wary of strangers as Rawhead is not above appearing as a human. He is the more acceptable face of death that masks the real horrors of the world.

At the risk of dating myself, he reminds me a lot of Rawhead Rex.

Parvati Great Goddess Of India Image
PARVATI ( SHE WHO IS OF THE MOUNTAINS) IS THE GREAT GODDESS OF INDIA; SHE IS THE GODDESS OF FEMININITY AND REPRESENTS THE BEAUTY OF WOMANHOOD. SHE IS THE MAIDEN ASPECT OF THE TRIPLE GODDESS, FORMING THE TRIAD WITH DURGA AND KALI MA. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF HEMAYAT, LORD OF THE HIMALAYAN MOUNTAINS, AND HIS QUEEN, MENA. SHE IS USUALLY DESCRIBED AS VERY BEAUTIFUL, AND IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT THE REASON FOR HER BIRTH WAS TO LURE THE GOD, SHIVA, INTO MARRIAGE. SHE SYMBOLIZES THE NOBLE VIRTUES WHICH ARE GREATLY ADMIRED IN THE HINDU RELIGION. PARVATI IS AN EARTHY GODDESS, FOND OF DANCING AND THE PLEASURES OF THE BODY.

LEGEND GOES THAT SHIVA HAD BECOME DESPONDENT OVER THE DEATH OF HIS WIFE, SO HE TURNED TO THE LIFE OF A HERMIT. THE GODS WERE VERY WORRIED AND BEGGED SHAKTI, THE MOTHER, FOR HELP. IN RESPONSE, SHE TOOK ON THE FORM OF PARVATI, THE PRINCESS OF THE MOUNTAINS, AND SOUGHT TO GAIN SHIVA'S ATTENTION, AND ALTHOUGH AT FIRST HE PAID NO ATTENTION, THE SKILLED AND PATIENT GODDESS EVENTUALLY SEDUCED HIM WITH HER BEAUTY, CHARM, AND WIT.

IT SEEMS THE COUPLE HAD MANY DISPUTES ABOUT HAVING CHILDREN, AND WHEN PARVATI BORE A SON, SHIVA CHOPPED HIS HEAD OFF; THEN, FEELING GUILTY, HE REPLACED IT WITH THE HEAD OF AN ELEPHANT. THE CHILD BECAME THE GOD, GANESH, A HINDU GOD OF GOOD FORTUNE.

THE STORY OF PARVATI GIVES US A CLUE AS TO THE ONLY WAY OUT OF A QUANDRY. THE GODDESS DECIDED THAT SHE WAS GOING TO WIN HER LOVE AND WENT AFTER HIM, NO MATTER WHAT IT TOOK. PARVATI'S STORY REMINDS US THAT WE NEED TO BE CLEAR ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT WE REALLY WANT TO HAVE CHILDREN...AND WHETHER BOTH PARENTS ARE IN AGREEMENT. WOMEN NEED NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO REPRODUCE; INSTEAD, IF WE SO CHOSE, WE CAN TAKE JOY IN THE CHILDREN OF OTHERS.
