"JURATA" (YOO-RAH-TUH) IS THE BEAUTIFUL LITHUANIAN SEA GODDESS, THE GODDESS OF THE BALTIC; HER NAME MEANS "SEA." SHE LIVES UNDER THE SEA IN A SPLENDID PALACE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BALTIC WHICH IS MADE OF AMBER...POLISHED TO LOOK LIKE GOLD. SHE IS SAID TO HAVE THE APPEAR TO OTHERS AS A MERMAID.

LEGEND HAS IT THAT THE MIGHTY GOD OF THUNDER, PIORUN, FELL IN LOVE WITH HER BEAUTY, BUT IT SEEMS THAT JURATA ONLY HAD EYES FOR A HANDSOME YOUNG FISHERMAN. EVERY NIGHT SHE SWAM TO THE SHORE TO MEET HER SWEETHEART. AND SO IT WAS THAT IN A JEALOUS RAGE, THE GOD OF THUNDER CAUSED A GREAT LIGHTNING STORM, AND THROWING DOWN A THUNDERBOLTS, HE SHATTERED JURATA'S CASTLE...KILLING JURATA AND ALL OF HER COURTIERS. THE YOUNG FISHERMAN WAS CHAINED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA WHERE HE DROWNED.

AND IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT, TO THIS DAY, YOU CAN HEAR THE YOUNG FISHERMAN'S MOURNFUL CRIES ANY TIME THERE IS A LIGHTNING STORM ON THE BALTIC...AND THE AMBER WHICH IS CAST ASHORE BY THE WAVES OF THE BALTIC ARE THE BROKEN FRAGMENTS OF JURATA'S CASTLE.
