Maahes Image
Maahes (also spelled Mihos, Miysis, Mios, Maihes, and Mahes) was an ancient Egyptian lion-headed god of war, whose name means "he who is true beside her". He was seen as a lion prince, the son of the goddess Bast (goddess) in Lower Egypt and of Sekhmet in Upper Egypt and shared her natures. His father was told to be a human unaware of Bastet's/Sekhemet's intentions to conceive. Maahes was a deity associated with war and weather, and was considered the protector of matrilineality and of the high priests of Amun, as well as that of knives, lotuses, and devouring captives. His cult was centred in Taremu and Per-Bast.

Pythagorean Signet Ring

Pythagorean Signet Ring Image
The number five was peculiarly associated by the Pythagoreans with the art of healing, and the pentagram, or five-pointed star, was to them the symbol of health. The above figure represents a magical ring set with a talismanic gem bearing the pentalpha, or star formed by five different positions of the Greek Alpha. On this subject Albert Mackey writes; "The disciples of Pythagoras, who were indeed its real inventors, placed within each of its interior angles one the letters of the Greek word iGEIA, or the Latin one SALUS, both of which signify health; and thus it was made the talisman of health. They placed it at the beginning of their epistles as a greeting to invoke a secure health to their correspondent. But its use was not confined to the disciples of Pythagoras. As a talisman, it was employed all over the East as a charm to resist evil spirits."

Kumugwe

Kumugwe Cover
Kumugwe (also Komokwa or Goomokwey) is a figure in the mythology of Pacific Northwest peoples. Known as "Copper-Maker", he is the god of the undersea world revered by the Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuxalk indigenous nations. He has a house under the sea filled with riches, and his name means "wealthy one". He is sometimes identified as one and the same as Qaniqilak, the spirit of the summer fishing season, and is then regarded as the adversary of Tseiqami otherwise known as Thunderbird, the guiding spirit of the Winter Hamatsa Dance season. Kumugwe is master of the seals. The posts and beams of his house are living sea lions. Sometimes he appears on the surface of the sea, but his head is so big that it looks like an island. He is responsible for the rising and ebbing of the tides, as well as the riches these tides deposit on beaches, and those claimed by the vagaries of sea weather, both material and human lives. One terrific story recounts how he eats human eyes as if they were crab apples. Kumugwe has the power to see into the future, heal the sick and injured, and bestow powers on those whom he favors. Many heroes went on quests to reach his undersea abode; those who made it were rewarded with riches and spirit magic. His world is guarded by the octopus. Sometimes Kumugwe himself is conceived of in octopus form. Kumugwe would teach the hero who entered his abode the ways of the sea, and give him gifts of blankets, coppers, songs, masks, and regalia. These items of mystical regalia are called Tlugwe (or Tlokwe) in Kwak'wala. One of Kumugwe's epithets is "Copper Maker. " He has a wife named Tlakwakilayokwa, which means "Born to Be Copper Maker's Woman. " She is also sometimes named Kominaga. Masks of Kumugwe often show him with sea creature attributes, such as rounded fish eyes, and rows of gills at the corners of his mouth, not to mention fins encircling his head, the suction cups of an octopus, fish and aquatic birds which frame or sit upon his head. His most important totemic animals are loons, seals, sea lions, octopuses, orcas, and sculpins.

SHE GAVE BIRTH TO HUMANITY, ANIMALS AND PLANTS; HER BODY CONTAINS THE SECRET CAVES IN WHICH HER FOLLOWERS WORSHIP. IT WAS "KUNAPIPI" WHO, IN A TIME LONG, LONG AGO, WHO CAME IN "DREAMTIME" FROM A SINKING LAND TO ESTABLISH HERSELF AND HER WORSHIP, AND IT WAS SHE WHO BROUGHT THE FIRST ANCESTORS TO THE LAND, TEACHING THEM THE LINES OF THE DREAMTIME SONGS...THE LINES THEY COULD FOLLOW TO THE SACRED PLACES OF HER BODY.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME, EACH OF HER WORSHIPPERS TRAVELS TO ONE OF THE SACRED PLACES AND SWINGS A "BULLROARER" UNTIL "KUNAPIPI" SINGS AND INTRODUCES THE INITIATE TO HIS OR HER TWIN SOUL, A SOUL THAT RESIDES ALWAYS WITH THE GODDESS AND, AT THE WORSHIPPER'S DEATH, WILL CALL ITS TWIN BACK TO "KUNAPIPI. Goddess Mahakali

Goddess Mahakali Image
Mahakali literally translated as Great Kali, is a Hindu Goddess, considered by some to be the consort of Shiva, and by others as the basis of Reality (see below). Mahakali in Sanskrit is etymologically the feminized variant of Mahakala or Great Time (which is interpreted also as Death), an epithet of the God Shiva in Hinduism. Mahakali is another name of the dark Goddess Kali, who is the force of the anger of Durga and is an aspect of the Mahashakti and therefore her color is light blue. She is believed to be the greatest aspect of Kali whom many Hindus hold as a Divine Mother.

Mahakali (Kali Devi) is one of the incarnations of 'Shakti' of Durga. She is the power bestower and is believed by Hindus to be the destroyer of evils and enemies. This form of Durga is most adored in Bengal and Bihar. She is also called Mahishasur Mardini (The destroyer of Demon Mahishasur who was a frightening figure on earth at a time). Kali or Mahakali is specially adored during both the Navratras by the Hindus.

Mahakali's mythology is contained in various Puranic and Tantric Hindu Scriptures (Shastra), where She is variously portrayed as the Adi-Shakti or Primeval Force of the Universe, identical with the Ultimate Reality or Brahman, the (female) Prakriti or World as opposed to the (male) Purusha or Consciousness, or as one of three manifestations of Mahadevi (The Great Goddess) that represent the three Gunas or attributes in Samkhya philosophy; in this interpretation Mahakali represents Tamas or the force of inertia. A common understanding of the Durga Saptashati or Chandi Path (the Devi Mahatmya or "Greatness of the Goddess", a later interpolation into the Markandeya Purana, considered a core text of Shaktism, the branch of Hinduism which considers Devi to be the highest aspect of Godhead) assigns a different form of the Goddess (Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, and Mahakali) to each of the three episodes therein.

Goddess Sinann Done Image
"(THE RIVER SHANNON)"

THE RIVERS OF IRELAND BEAR THE NAMES OF THE GREAT GODDESS IN HER DIFFERENT GUISES. " SINANN", THE YELLOW HAIRED GODDESS OF THE TUATHA DE DANANN WAS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE SEA GOD, "LIR." SHE WAS A IRISH RIVER GODDESS IN ANCIENT CELTIC MYTHOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH THE RIVER "SHANNON," THE LONGEST RIVER IN IRELAND WHICH WAS SOUGHT OUT FOR ITS HAZELNUTS OF WISDOM. THE HAZELNUT, WITH ITS ROUND HARD SHELL, IS A SYMBOL FOUND IN MANY FOLKTALES.

IN HER BEST KNOWN LEGEND, WARNED THAT SHE SHOULD NOT APPROACH THE WELL WHERE THE WISDOM IS HIDDEN, SHE TRAVELS TO "CONNLA'S WELL" ANYWAY IN SEARCH OF ESOTERIC KNOWLEDGE, BUT APPARENTLY VIOLATED PROTOCOL AND IS DENIED. THE WELL IN ITS ANGER RISES UP AND DROWNS HER, SWEEPING HER DOWN INTO THE SEA, THUS BIRTHING THE RIVER WHICH STILL CARRIES HER NAME.

"SINANN" WAS PARTICULARLY REVERED BY THE COASTAL TRIBE OF "CORCU BAISCIND", AN EARLY KINGDOM IN COUNTY CLARE BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED SHE COULD SLAY THE SEA MONSTERS. A SANCTUARY FOR THIS GODDESS EXISTED ON THE ISLAND OF "INIS-CATHAIG."

Goddess Ishikori Dome

Goddess Ishikori Dome Image
ISHIKORI-DOME is the Shinto Goddess of stone-cutting. Although some sources refer to her as a God, most say that she was a Goddess. When Amaterasu, the Goddess of the sun, locked herself away in a cave in grief over her sister Wakahirume's death, the Gods commissioned Ishikori-dome to create a mirror in an attempt to lure Amaterasu out of the cave. She formed a stone mold which was then filled with copper to create the mirror known as Yata-no-kagami (eight-hand mirror), and the mirror was hung outside Amaterasu's cave. When she was lured out of the cave by the laughing of the other Gods at the antics of Ame-no-Uzume, Goddess of dance, Amaterasu saw herself in the mirror and was so distracted that the Gods had time to seal the cave so that she could not return to her self-imposed exile. The mirror itself is said to now reside in the Ise Jingu shrine, and most Shinto shrines display a mirror as a symbol of Amaterasu. Ishikori-dome's name, which means "stone-forming old woman," is also seen as ISHIKORI-DOME-NO-MIKOTO, ISHIKORI-DOME-NO-KAMI, and ISHIKORE-DOME.

"GENDENWITHA"...THE IROQUOIS CALLED THE "MORNING STAR" BY THIS NAME, WHICH TRANSLATES AS "SHE WHO BRINGS THE DAY. HER STORY TELLS OF A TIME WHEN THE HUNTER, "SOSONDOWAH" (GREAT NIGHT) WAS STALKING A SUPERNATURAL ELK. HE PURSUED THE "SKY ELK" WHICH HAD SOMEHOW WANDERED DOWN TO EARTH FAR UP INTO THE HEAVENS. IT WAS THERE THAT HE FOUND HIMSELF TRAPPED BY GODDESS OF THE "DAWN "WHO SET HIM AS WATCHMAN BEFORE THE DOOR OF HER LODGE. BUT, HE DID NOT REMAIN FAITHFUL FOR WHEN HE LOOKED DOWN UPON THE EARTH, HE SAW "GENDENWITHA", A MORTAL MAIDEN, WHO LOVED TO DANCE BENEATH THE STARRY SKIES, AND HE FELL IN HER. HE WATCHED HER DANCE THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, LONGING TO BE WITH HER.

SO, WHILE "DAWN "WAS BUSY COLORING THE SKY, THE HE DESCENDED TO HIS BELOVED IN THE "SPRING, "AND HE SANG TO HER A BLUEBIRD; IN THE SUMMER HE WOOED HER AS A BLACKBIRD. AND IN THE AUTUMN, IT WAS UNDER THE GUISE OF A GIANT NIGHTHAWK THAT HE BORE HER TO THE HEAVENS WITH HIM. BUT THE JEALOUS SPIRIT OF "DAWN "TURNED THE WOMAN INTO A STAR AND SET" GENDENWITHA J"UST ABOVE HER DOOR WHERE HE COULD WATCH HER ALL NIGHT, BUT NEVER BE WITH HER. Isis Symbols And Sacred Objects

Isis Symbols And Sacred Objects Image
Goddess symbols, individualized for each goddess, were incorporated into the worship of the ancient goddesses, were often worn as jewelry, and also used in the household decor as talismans to seek the goddesses special gifts, blessings, or protection. A large number of goddess symbols have survived in statuary and other works of art.

Many of the goddess symbols come from the legends surrounding a specific goddess and were "characters" in her story. Other goddess symbols were derived from the rituals used in the ancient rites of worship of these pagan goddesses.

The goddess Isis is often represented by symbols associated with her distinctly feminine but courageous and persevering nature, or with her association with death and resurrection. It is hardly surprising that many of our icons representing feminine strength and passionate emotions, including the image of Madonna and Child in works of art, are derived from the ancient goddess symbols of the Egyptian goddess Isis.

In the Book of the Dead, Isis was described as" who gives birth to heaven and earth, knows the orphan, knows the widow, seeks justice for the poor, and shelter for the "Some of Isis' many other titles were:

*

In the duality of our reality - Isis represents our feminine aspects - creation - rebirth - ascension - intuition - psychic abilties - higher chakras - higher frequency virbations - love and compassion. She is the Yin energies - the mother nurturer - the High Priestess - the Goddess of all mythological tales - to other female icons in the mythologies of creation. She is the essence of the feminine energy which is part of us all.

"AMONG THE HITTITES, HANNAHANNA" WAS THE GREAT MOTHER AND BIRTH GODDESS. THE WORD HANNA MEANS GRANDMOTHER. SHE WAS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH BIRTH, CREATION, AND DESTINY AS WELL AS MANY MOUNTAINS, RIVERS, SPRINGS, AND SPIRITS OF THE PAST WHO BECOME GODS AFTER THEIR DEATH. SHE WAS THE "QUEEN OF HEAVEN" AND THE "MOTHER OF ALL," THE "HOLY GRANDMOTHER" WHO BRINGS LIFE. IN THE MYTHS, SHE BESTOWS LIFE AND ALSO APPEARS AS THE WISEST OF THE DEITIES, A PERSONAGE TO WHOM THE OTHER GODS TURN IN TIME OF DISASTER. A GODDESS OF WISDOM, IT WAS ALSO SAID THAT SHE WAS ABLE TO FORETELL THE FUTURE.

APPARENTLY LIKE "DEMETER, HANNAHANNA " WOULD DISAPPEAR FOR AWHILE IN A FIT OF ANGER, AND WHILE SHE WAS GONE, CATTLE AND SHEEP WERE STIFLED AND MOTHERS, BOTH HUMAN AND ANIMA, COULD TAKE NO ACCOUNT OF THEIR CHILDREN. IT WAS SAID THAT WHEN SHE WOULD COME UP TO THE SURFACE OF EARTH FROM UNDERGROUND, THE WORLD WOULD COME BACK TO LIFE.

IN HITTITE MYTHOLOGY SHE WAS SERVED BY A BEE. "HANNAHANNA" SENT THE BEE TO FIND THE LOST FERTILITY GOD "TELEPINU "WHO HAD FALLEN INTO A DEEP SLEEP, AND NO ONE KNEW WHERE TO FIND HIM. AND, WHILE HE SLEPT, THE WELLS, RIVERS, AND STREAMS WERE DRYING UP. ALL THE HITTITE GODS HAD FAILED IN THEIR EFFORTS TO FIND "TELEPINU," BUT THE BEE, ALTHOUGH SMALL AND WEAK, WAS SUCCESSFUL IN ITS QUEST, AND THE LAND WAS IMMEDIATELY BLESSED WITH RAIN.

TO THE WARAO OF VENEZUELA, THE FOREST IS A TRIBE OF TREES, BUSHES, AND PALMS, AND THE RED "CACHICAMO" TREE IS "DAUARANI", THE "MOTHER OF THE FOREST", THE GODDESS OF LIGHT. IN EXCHANGE FOR HER COVETED MEDICINAL INGREDIENTS, SHE CAREFULLY INVENTORIES AND WATCHES OVER THE FOREST. TO MAKE A CANOE, ONE MUST SEEK HER PERMISSION. THE SPIRIT OF THE TREES LIVES ON IN THE CANOES WHICH ARE CARVED FROM THE EMBODIMENT OF "DAUARANI" WHOSE WOMB IS BOTH THE BIRTH CANAL AND COFFIN.

ANYONE WHO WANTS TO FELL A TREE NEEDS A SHAMAN TO INTERCEDE ON HIS BEHALF AND ASK "DAUARANI" TO TO ACCEPT HIM AS A HUSBAND OF OF ONE OF HER DAUGHTERS. HENCE, SHAMANS RITUALLY APPROACH THE TREE WOMAN WHO IS GENERALLY DEPICTED AS A MAIDEN WEARING A COMB AND A NECKLACE OF BLUE, WHITE, AND RED BEADS, AND SING TO HER. THE CANOE CARVED FROM HER WOOD IS VULVA SHAPED. THE WARAO, WHO CALL THEMSELVES CANOE PEOPLE, COMPARE ITS CARGO TO THE FRUITS CREATED BY THE "MOTHER OF THE FOREST". UPON DEATH, A WARAO IS BURIED IN A DUGOUT CANOE CALLED THE "VAGINA OF DAUARANI. "

Mayahuel The Goddess Of Tequila

Mayahuel The Goddess Of Tequila Image
"(JUST AS THERE ARE LEGENDS ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF THE EARTH, THE SUN, THE MOON, CORN, TEQUILA HAD ONE OF ITS OWN) "

THE ORIGIN OF THE AGAVE GOES BACK TO THE TIME OF THE AZTECS AND THEIR DEITIES.
" MAYAHUEL "IS THE MANY BREASTED GODDESS OF FERTILITY AND THE GODDESS OF THE MAGUEY PLANT, THE PLANT FROM WHICH TEQUILA IS DERIVED. SHE IS THE MOTHER OF MANY RABBIT GODS AND IT IS SAID THAT SHE FEEDS HER CHILDREN FROM HER 400 BREASTS, ALL OF WHICH PRODUCE THE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE. THUS, THEY SAY THAT THE RABBITS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANY FORMS OF DRUNKENNESS. SHE RULES THE EARTH, THE NIGHT SKY, HALLUCINATIONS, AS WELL AS DRUNKENNESS.

LEGEND HAS IT THAT WHEN THE EARTH FIRST BEGAN THERE WAS A GODDESS OF THE HEAVENS WHO WAS CALLED "TZINTZIMILLE". NOW, SHE WAS AN EVIL ONE, A GODDESS WHO DEVOURED THE LIGHT AND PLUNGED THE EARTH INTO DARKNESS SO SHE COULD FORCE MANKIND TO OFFER HUMAN SACRIFICES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN JUST A LITTLE LIGHT FROM HER. QUETZACOATL/EHECATL, THE GOD OF REDEMPTION, GREW TIRED OF HER GAMES AND DECIDED THAT HE WAS GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT; HE ASCENDED UP TO THE SKY TO DO BATTLE WITH THE EVIL ONE, BUT INSTEAD, HE CAME ACROSS MAYAHUEL, THE EVIL ONE'S BEAUTIFUL YOUNG GRANDDAUGHTER. QUETZACOATL FELL MADLY IN LOVE WITH HER AND, INSTEAD OF SLAYING THE EVIL ONE, HE PERSUADED MAYAHUEL TO RETURN TO THE EARTH WITH HIM AND BECOME HIS WIFE.

WHEN THE EVIL ONE DISCOVERED THIS, SHE WAS FURIOUS AND BEGAN SEARCHING ALL OVER FOR THE COUPLE, AND THE TWO LOVERS WERE FORCED TO RUN FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER IN ORDER TO HIDE FROM HER. THEN, ONE DAY THEY GREW TIRED OF RUNNING; BESIDES, THERE WAS NO PLACE LEFT WHERE THEY COULD HIDE, SO THE PAIR DECIDED TO BECOME TREES, ONE BESIDE THE OTHER, CLOSE ENOUGH SO THAT WHEN THE WIND BLEW, THEIR LEAVES WOULD CARESS ONE ANOTHER.

AND AS THE STORY GOES, THE PAIR LIVED LIKE THAT FOR AWHILE, BUT EVENTUALLY THE EVIL ONE FOUND THEM; MAYAHUEL WAS EATEN UP BY THE STARS AND HER REMNANTS BURIED IN THE GROUND. QUETZALCOATL FLEW OFF INTO THE SKY AND KILLED THE EVIL ONE. THE LIGHT WAS FINALLY RETURNED TO THE EARTH, BUT QUETZALCOATL HAD LOST THE ONE HE LOVED. EACH NIGHT HE WOULD GO TO HER GRAVE AND CRY. THE OTHER GODS, SEEING THIS, DECIDED THAT THEY SHOULD DO SOMETHING FOR HIM. AT THE BURIAL SITE, A PLANT HAD BEGUN TO GROW, AND THE GODS DECIDED TO GIVE VERY SPECIAL PROPERTIES TO THIS PLANT...HALLUCINOGENIC PROPERTIES THAT WOULD COMFORT QUETZALCOATL'S SOUL. HENCE, FROM THEN ON, HE COULD DRINK THE MAGICAL ELIXIR THAT CAME FROM THE PLANT AND FIND COMFORT.

AND, FROM THAT POINT ON, THE NECTAR FROM THE AGAVE PLANT BECAME A RITUAL BEVERAGE AND A CERMONIAL OFFERING FOR THE GODS AND OTHER HOLY BEINGS.

Renenutet Egyptian Goddess Of The Harvest Image
AS THE EGYPTIAN GODDESS OF THE HARVEST, "RENENUTET" (SHE WHO REARS) WAS A DEITY PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO GRAPE GROWERS. THIS MADE HER A GODDESS OF WINE AND LED TO MANY PEOPLE SACRIFICING TO HER DURING TIMES OF HARVEST...HOPING THAT THEIR SACRIFICES WOULD LEAD TO FERTILITY AND GROWTH. SHE WAS SOMETIMES VIEWED AS THE WIFE OF SOBEK, WHO WAS OFTEN CREDITED WITH ANNUALLY FLOODING THE NILE AND ALLOWING HARVESTING TO TAKE PLACE. COINCIDENTALLY, THIS ALLOWED HIM TO ALSO BE VIEWED AS A WINE GOD, LEAVING ME TO BELIEVE THAT RENENUTET AND SOBEK'S WEDDING MUST HAVE BEEN OPEN BAR.

IN HER ROLE OF FERTILITY GODDESS, "RENENUTET" WAS KNOWN AS THE "LADY OF FERTILE FIELDS" AND "LADY OF GRANARIES". AN ANNUAL FESTIVAL WAS DEDICATED TO HER HONOR AND SHE WAS OFFERED THE BEST YIELDS OF THE CROPS. THERE WAS ALSO OFTEN A SHRINE DEDICATED TO HER NEAR A WINE PRESS OR VAT, SO SHE COULD RECEIVE THE OFFERINGS OF THE WINE MAKERS.

RENENUTET WAS A GODDESS OF GREAT POWER WHO WAS PORTRAYED WITH THE HEAD OF A SNAKE. HER GAZE, IT WAS SAID, COULD WITHER HER ENEMIES, BUT IT COULD ALSO GRANT GREAT ABUNDANCE TO CROPS AND LIVESTOCK. SHE WAS ALSO THE CARETAKER OF CHILDREN TO WHOM SHE GAVE NOURISHMENT AND A DESTINY, AND IT WAS SAID THAT NEWBORNS HAD HER ON THEIR SHOULDER FROM THEIR FIRST DAY OF LIFE.

THE "HYMN OF RENENUTET" SAYS: "I WILL MAKE THE NILE SWELL FOR YOU","WITHOUT THERE BEING A YEAR OF LACK AND EXHAUSTION IN THE WHOLE LAND","SO THE PLANTS WILL FLOURISH, BENDING UNDER THEIR FRUIT"."THE LAND OF EGYPT IS BEGINNING TO STIR AGAIN","THE SHORES ARE SHINING WONDERFULLY","AND WEALTH AND WELL-BEING DWELL WITH THEM","AS IT HAD BEEN BEFORE".

Goddess Gullveig Image
"GULLVEIG" WAS A VANIR GODDESS; SHE WAS POSSIBLY A GODDESS OF HEALING SHE WAS A SORCERESS AND SEERESS WHO HAD A GREAT LOVE AND LUST FOR GOLD. ONE DAY SHE APPEARED AT THE GREAT HALL OF ODIN AND BEGAN TO CONVERSE WITH THE GODS. THEY DISCUSSED VARIOUS TOPICS, BUT EVENTUALLY THE CONVERSATION ROLLED AROUND TO GULLVEIG'S FAVORITE TOPIC, AND SHE SPOKE OF NOTHING ELSE BUT HER LOVE OF THE PRECIOUS METAL. ODIN WEARIED OF THIS TALK AND AND TRIED TO DIVERT TO ANOTHER TOPIC, BUT BUT SHE COULD NOT BE DISSUADED AND CONTINUED TO SHARE OF HER LOVE FOR GOLD.

NOW, MIND YOU, AT THIS POINT OF THE STORY, ODIN HAD NO IDEA THAT SHE WAS ACTUALLY A GODDESS OF ANOTHER RACE OF GODS...OR PERHAPS HE WOULDN'T HAVE STRUCK HER DOWN SO CRUELLY. THEY HURLED HER INTO A GREAT FIRE. AND, ALTHOUGH SHE BURNED TO DEATH, SHE STEPPED OUT FROM THE FLAMES UNSCATHED. THREE TIMES SHE WAS BURNED, AND ALL THREE TIMES SHE WAS REBORN.

NOW, WHEN GULLVEIG RETURNED TO HER HOME AND TOLD OF HOW CRUELY SHE HAD BEEN TREATED, THE VANIR BECAME INCENSED WITH ANGER AND DEMANDED REPARATION IN THE FORM OF THE SAME STATUS AND PRIVILEGE OF THE AESIR, BUT THE AESIR REFUSED. HENCE IT WAS THAT THE VANIR SWORE VENGEANCE AND BEGAN TO PREPARE FOR WAR. WHEN THE AESIR HEARD ABOUT THIS, THEY MOVED AGAINST THE VANIR IN THE FIRST WAR THAT THE WORLD HAD EVER KNOWN. THE BATTLE RAGED FOR A LONG TIME, NO ONE KNOWS HOW LONG FOR SURE, WITH NEITHER SIDE GAINING MUCH GROUND. EVENTUALLY THE GODS BECAME WEARY OF WAR AND BEGAN TO TALK OF PEACE. BOTH SIDES SWORE TO LIVE SIDE BY SIDE IN PEACE.

THE TALE OF GULLVEIG AND HER VISIT WITH ODIN IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF HOW POORLY WOMEN WERE TREATED IN THE PAST. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONSIDER THE VANIR'S RESPONSE FOR IT SHOWS THEY HELD THEIR GODDESS IN HIGH ESTEEM... REPRESENTING A MATRIARCHAL SOCIETY WHEREAS ODIN AND HIS CREW WERE MORE MALE-ORIENTED...REPRESENTING A PATRIARCHAL SOCIETY.

WURIUPRANILI is the Tiwi Goddess of the sun. Her brother, Purukupali, was the world's first man and discovered how to make fire. He gave Wuriupranili a bark torch to keep the fire going. Each day she lights her torch and carries it across the sky. Before she leaves, she decorates her body with red ochre which gives color to the sunrise. When she reaches the western horizon, she again decorates herself, creating a beautiful sunset. She then douses her torch in the western sea, using the embers that remain to guide her under the earth back to the east. Wuriupranili's name is also seen as WURIUPRANALA.

Goddess Fdla Image
F'oDLA (pronounced FO-la) is the Celtic Goddess of the power of Ireland. She is one of the Tuatha de Danaan, the people of the Goddess Danu. When the Milesians arrived in Ireland and conquered them, F'odla and her two sisters, 'Eriu and Banba, all asked that the island be named for them. 'Eriu won the request, but F'odla's name continued to be used on occasion. F'odla and her sisters are the daughters of Ernmas, a mother Goddess, who is also the mother of another triad of Goddesses--Badb, Macha, and Anu, also known as the Morrigan. The first triad represents the sovereignty of Ireland, while the second triad were Goddesses of war, and therefore represent the protection of Ireland. F'odla's husband MacCecht was one of the last kings of the Tuatha de Danaan, along with his brothers MacCuilland MacGreine. F'odla's name, which means "a sod of earth," is also seen as F'oTLA, F'oDHLA, and F'oLA.

Goddess Hatmehyt Image
HATMEHYT is an Egyptian Goddess of fish, whose name means "she who is before the fishes". This suggests either that she was the first fish or that she is predominant over other fish deities. She was worshipped primarily at Mendes, and was the consort of that city's ram God, Banebdjedet. She is usually depicted as a woman with a fish emblem on her head, or in the form of a fish. Her name is also seen as HATMEHIT.

Death

Death Image
More seen as skeletal in the art of the period, he seemed much more inviting as his appearance ended the suffering. Also for good Catholics death taking them in grace was a welcome gift. Some art shows him as a lover, which can go back to several Gods of old.

Even today he is with us, as everything from a mascot, artwork, online persona and more. Yes, I bet he does like death metal.

Goddess Nikkal

Goddess Nikkal Image
NIKKAL (pronounced nee-KAL) is the Canaanite Goddess of orchards, fruit, and the harvest. She is the daughter of Khirkhib, God of summer, and wife of Yarikh, God of the moon. Nikkal's father did not want her to marry Yarikh, and suggested to him that he marry one of Baal's daughters instead. Yarikh would not give up, and after paying a brideprice of silver, gold, and necklaces of lapis lazuli, Khirkhib relented. It was a good match, as the dew that Yarikh brings each night waters Nikkal's orchards, ensuring a bountiful harvest.

Nikkal is the subject of a hymn which may be the oldest known musical score. In the 1950s, archaeologists found a tablet from Ugarit, dated back to 1400 BCE, now called the Hurrian Hymn. Although there is not enough left of the tablet to give a satisfactory translation of the lyrics, the music has been interpreted.

Nikkal's full name is NIKKAL-WA-IB, which means "Great Lady and Fruitful" or "Great Goddess of Fruit".
