Goddess Hsi Wang Mu Image
HSI WANG MU is the Chinese Goddess of immortality. In her magic orchard, she grows peaches whose fragrance can be smelled from miles away. The fragrance has the power to bring peace to those who smell it. One of Hsi Wang Mu's peach trees only bears fruit every 3000 years, and these peaches (which take another 3000 years to ripen) grant immortality. When they are ready, Hsi Wang Mu invites all of the Gods to share her peaches, renewing their spirits.

Hsi Wang Mu is also the personification of the concept of yin; her husband Mu Kung is the embodiment of yang. She was formed from the Western Air, he from the Eastern, and together they created all things. They live with the other immortals in a magnificent palace made of jade, surrounded by a wall of gold. Hsi Wang Mu is attended by the Jade Maidens, and keeps cranes, peacocks, and a phoenix. Her name is also seen as XI WANG MU or SI WANG MU, and her titles include SPIRIT MOTHER OF THE WEST, LADY QUEEN OF THE WEST, QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST, MOTHER OF THE GOLDEN TORTOISE, GOLDEN MOTHER OF THE SHINING LAKE, and QUEEN OF THE HEAVENS.

Goddess Laieikawai Image
"LAIEKAWAI" IS THE HAWAIIAN GODDESS OF THE RAINBOW. SHE AND HER TWIN SISTER "LA'IELOHELOHE" WERE BORN IN O'AHU. AS LEGEND HAS IT, HER FATHER WAS SO ENRAGED THAT HIS WIFE PRESENTED HIM WITH FEMALE CHILDREN THAT HE SWORE WOULD KILL ALL OF HIS DAUGHTERS UNTIL A MALE CHILD SHOULD APPEAR; HENCE, LAIEIKAWAI'S MOTHER HID HER AND HER SISTER UNTIL THEY HAD GROWN INTO WOMANHOOD.

LAIEKAWAI'S BEAUTY ATTRACTED EVEN THE GODS, AND IT IS SAID THAT THE CHIEFS FROM MANY ISLANDS TRAVELED FAR AND WIDE JUST TO GAZE UPON HER FACE ONCE SHE WAS REMOVED FROM HER HIDING PLACE BY HER GRANDMOTHER. SHE WORE A ROBE TINTED LIKE A RAINBOW, AND WHEREVER SHE WENT, A FRAGMENT OF RAINBOW HUNG OVER HER. EVENTUALLY, LAIEIKAWAI MARRIED THE SUN PRINCE, AND THAT VERY SAME RAINBOW SERVED AS A LADDER FOR HER TO TRAVEL TO HIS NEW HOME IN THE MOON; IT SEEMS THAT HIS PLACE IN THE SUN WAS FAR TOO HOT AND GLARING FOR THE YOUNG GODDESS. ALL GOES WELL UNTIL, ON ONE OF HIS VISITS TO EARTH, HIS ROVING EYE FALLS UPON THE BUDDING BEAUTY OF HIS SISTER-IN-LAW AND TURNS ALL OF HIS ATTENTIONS ON HER, WOOING HER; EVENTUALLY HE WINS HER AFFECTIONS.

MUCH TIME PASSES, AND LAIEKAWAI BEGINS TO WONDER WHAT IMPORTANT AFFAIRS ARE KEEPING HIM SO LONG ON EARTH. SHE GOES TO THE TEMPLE AT KAHAKAEKAEA TO SEEK THE ANSWERS FROM THE "BOWL OF KNOWLEDGE" WHICH REVEALS TO ONE WHO LOOKS WITHIN WHAT IS GOING ON BELOW...A FORM OF SCRYING. LAIEIKAWAI, SHOCKED, DISCOVERS HER HUSBAND'S INFIDELITY AND REPORTS HIM TO HIS PARENTS WHO LIVE WITH HER IN THE HEAVENS. FOR PUNISHMENT, THEY BANISH HIM TO BECOME A WANDERING SPIRIT. HE THE FIRST "LAPU" (GHOST) IN HAWAII. LAIEIKAWAI THEN RETURNS TO EARTH AND LIVES LIKE A GOD WITH HER SISTER.

TODAY SHE IS WORSHIPED AS KA-WAHINE-O-KA-LIULA, "THE LADY OF THE TWILIGHT, MIST," AND "MIRAGE, "AND IT IS SAID THAT ON OAHU THERE IS A NATURAL WELL, SOME THIRTY YARDS IN DIAMETER AND OF UNKNOWN DEPTH. THIS WELL IS BELIEVED TO BE CONNECTED WITH THE OCEAN. THE HAWAIIANS SAY THAT THIS WELL, KNOWN AS WAIAPUKA, HIDES THE ENTRANCE TO A CAVE THAT CAN BE REACHED ONLY BY DIVING, AND IT IS IN THAT CAVE THAT LAIEKAWAI WAS CONCEALED DURING HER INFANCY.

Goddess Hestia

Posted by Unknown

Goddess Hestia Image
The Greek Goddess, Hestia, represents purity, sincerity, sanctity and safety. She is the daughter of Zeus and Rhea and a sister of Zeus. She is the Goddess who ruled over the hearth, which was considered to be a sacred place, and the central fire of every Greek household and governed harmony and well being of the Greek homes. Women who are inspired by Her prefer the uncomplicated and contented life that she brings. It is a life that simply beckons you "to be". Hestia was a virginal goddess who devoted all of her time and efforts to looking after the homes and the families of Greek society.

In Greek art, Hestia was usually depicted in a pose of immobility. This can be very relevant to us in the modern world when we become 'stuck in a rut' while striving to reach our goals. We can tend to allow ourselves to become far too focused on a situation, thus, allowing it to devour our every waking moment...and we are then in danger of becoming paralysed by our obsession and fear to move on. Or, we may become so absorbed in our work, that we cannot imagine living any other way.

But, there will come a time when we finally reach the point where we can voice our need to break away from the situation. And it is at this time that we can ask for Hestia's assistance to act on our wish. So if the thought of a quiet and uncomplicated life seems very attractive to you, it is indeed the time to break from your obsessive patterns and establish new, healthy ones that nurture your body, mind, and spirit. You'll be surprised how quickly you can adapt to a more inspirational life.

Hestia, thou who tends the holy house
Of Lord Apollo, Pythian, Shooting far,
Thou having hair that drips with silky oil.
Approaching this house and enter, of one mind,
With all-wise Zeus; and for my song grant grace.

(Homeric Hymn)

IN THE "BOOK OF THE DEAD", ISIS WAS DESCRIBED AS "SHE WHO GIVES BIRTH TO THE HEAVEN AND EARTH, KNOWS THE ORPHAN, KNOWS THE WIDOW, SEEKS JUSTICE FOR THE POOR AND SHELTER FOR THE WEAK.

UNLIKE MOST OF THE EGYPTIAN GODS AND GODDESSES, ISIS REMAINED IN THE SAME FORM FROM THE BEGINNING OF HER HISTORY TO CURRENT DATES AND HAS ACHIEVED MUCH FAME THROUGHOUT HISTORY. MANY TEMPLES HAVE BEEN DEDICATED TO HER HONOR AND FOR THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIPPING HER.

Goddess Yamuna

Goddess Yamuna Image
YAMUNA is the Hindu Goddess of the river Yamuna. She is the daughter of Surya, the sun God, and his wife Saranya, Goddess of the dawn and clouds. Surya and Saranya had three children--Yamuna, her twin brother Yama, and another son named Manu. Saranya could not stand the intense nature of her husband and decided to divorce him, leaving her shadow, Chaaya, as her children's step-mother. Chaaya had a son of her own with Surya, and ignored the other children. This made Yama very angry, and he threatened Chaaya. Chaaya in turn cursed Yama and even his father could not save him from the curse. He became the God of death, leaving his family to rule over the underworld. Yamuna was devastated by the loss of her brother, and she wept and wept. Her tears became the river Yamuna, and it is said that anyone who bathes in the river will be spared a painful death. Yamuna is also known as YAMI, JAMUNAJI, and YAMINI, which means "night" in Sanskrit.

Charge Of Goddess Sekhmet

Charge Of Goddess Sekhmet Image

Charge of Goddess Sekhmet:

Listen to the words of the Sekhmet; She who of old was also called Beloved of Ra, Lady of Transformations, Opener of Ways, Shining One, and four thousand other names.

When you have need, come unto my temples and walk amongst the sacred columns. There shall I teach you the Mysteries and the ways of all magic. There shall I give unto you that which is hidden from those who do not seek in truth. I am the Way and I am the Key to the secret door. My paths are perilous and those who tread them do so in dread and joy. For I am the Creator and the Destroyer. I am the Weigher of Souls and I know all that lies in your heart. I will ask of you sacrifice, I shall demand of you truth, I shall strip you of all weakness and pretense. And I shall give unto you immortality.

Hear ye the words of Sekhmet; before whose wrath even the Gods tremble, whose light is the blazing sun, and whose arrows lay waste the foes of Pharaoh.

I who am the black earth, the Sun in its glory, and the miracle of the waters; I who bring passion and desire in the heart of man; I do call unto you. Arise and come to me. For I am the floods that bring life from the desert, and I am She who bears your soul to Ma’at at life’s ending. I gave birth to the oldest Gods, and I was there when mankind was formed from the mud of the Nile. Let my worship be in the heart that trembles before me, for I am the Overcomer of All Enemies and my ways are open only to the pure in heart and the strong of spirit. Know that I am with you always, from your coming in until your going forth. And lo, I shall be beside you in the Boat of Millions of Years as your soul reaches the undying lands and joins me forever.

About Goddess Sekhmet:

Literally translated, her name means 'Mighty One' or 'She who is Powerful' (sekhem means 'might' or 'power' and the -et is a feminine suffix). She is the daughter of the God Re/Ra and is one of the many Goddesses in Egyptian myth to be considered a manifestation of His Eye. Re's left Eye was said to represent the moon while His right Eye represented the sun, hence the particular markings around Sekhmet's right eye which also refers to her role as a predominantly solar Goddess.

In the mythic days of Egyptian history, Re Himself ruled as pharaoh for a time, and as He ruled for many years in human form, He, like humans, began to age. The people of Egypt commented on his frailty, noticed his weakening body, and some of them began to plot against Him, thinking Him no longer fit to rule in such a vulernable state. Egypt's people became corrupt with scheming, and although the people thought Re old and senile, He could not help but notice how fiendlike and greedy His people had become. Mournfully, Re decided that action had to be taken, and so He created the Goddess Sekhmet to destroy humanity. The Goddess took the form of a huge lioness and did as She was created to do. Sekhmet's bloodlust grew as She ravanged the country, devouring those who had evil intentions, Her desire for destruction growing even beyond Re's imaginings. In Her fury, She began devouring even those who were not corrupt. Re saw this and felt sorry for humanity, determined that the destruction must now come to a halt, but Re Himself was not powerful enough to stop by force what He had created. And so He devised a clever trick: He had seven thousand barrels of beer dyed the color of blood and drained on a field for Sekhmet to see. Drawn to the expanse of of blood, Sekhmet came and drank all of it from the land, leaving Her drunk and satiated. It was then that Re transformed Her into the Goddess Het-heru/Hathor, a Deity of love, merriment, joy, and sexuality.

Legend Of The Moon Goddess Chang O

Legend Of The Moon Goddess Chang O Image
Today is the Chinese Moon Festival, and I thought it a most appropriate time to share one of my favorite tales with you. Traditionally, the Moon Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th month every year of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This year if falls on October 3rd. It is said that on this special day, the Moon appears at its fullest, and it shines the brightest. In days of old, this was the time when all of the maidens of China, both young and old, would pray to the Moon Goddess to bring them the man of their dreams. They would then eat mooncakes, cookies, and fruits..while burning incense and candles as a gesture of their reverence. Although these old rituals are no longer followed, Chinese families continue to gather together on this day for a day of relaxation. And, on this occasion, the legend of Chang-O is told to the children as the families sit around eating mooncakes.

According to the old Chinese legend, there was once a famous archer, Hou Yi who was married to a beautiful woman, Chang-O. Her greatest fault was that she was far too inquisitive for her own good. Now, at this time, the sky was lit by ten Suns which scorched the Earth so that no crops would grow, threatening the propagation of humankind. So, to avoid this great disastor and the extinction of man, the wise emperor of China summoned Hou Yi and ordered him to slay all but one of the Suns. Yi stepped forward and did as asked. He became an instant hero here on Earth, but became greedy, asking for a reward; as a result, was rewarded with a special pill...the elixir of life, immortality, but he was advised not to take the pill immediately, that he should prepare himself with prayer and fasting for a year. Yi, being a man of great intelligence, did as he was told. He took the pill home and hid it.

The story goes that all was well until one day, while Hou Yi was away from home, Chang-O accidentally discovered the pill and wondering what it would do, swallowed it. Immediately, she realized that she could fly. But, at the very moment that she was hovering about in the air, Yi came home and realizing what she done, became very angry, reprimanding his wife...who then flew out the window and into the sky. Yi sped after her, his bow in hand, but Chang-O flew higher and higher. Yi pursued her halfway across the heavens, but eventually was forced to return to Earth due to the strong winds.

Chang-O, breathless, reached the Moon and coughed up a part of the pill which fell from her mouth. When the Queen Mother of the heavens saw what had happened, she felt badly for Chang-O and gave her a hare to keep her company as well as a woodcutter to cut the Tree of Immortality on the Moon for only when the tree was cut, would Chang-O be allowed to return to her home on Earth. That was a long, long time ago, and the woodcutter is still chopping. As for Yi, he built himself a palice in the sun as Yang (sun, male principle) with Chang-O (the moon, female principle).

Now, whenever there is a full moon, look up into the sky, and you might be able to see the shape of the tree, the woodcutter, and Chang-O herself. And, on one day of every year, on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, Yi can visit with his wife. And that, my friends, is why the moon is so full and beautiful on that night.

This story teaches us that we should not be greedy, to help others from our heart and not for the reward We should not take things that do not belong to us because for every action, there is a consequence.

And it is now time for some journal work. As you meditate on the energies of this day, think to what extent negative emotions such as greed, desire, arrogance, envy a part of your life. Have you harmed yourself or others by using this emotional energy in a destructive way? Can you envision a way that you can utiliz the energy of these powerful feelings into a more harmonious and helpful manner?

Morrigan

Posted by Unknown

Morrigan Cover
Irish goddess of death on the battlefield, she would swoop in crow or raven form after battles to claim her prizes. She was both feared and revered, and today still is. Not accepting her love is not a good idea. When one such man, a hero, did so, he then went so far as to wound her in anger. Needless to say Morrigan cawed happily on his dead shoulder whence he was slain in battle.

Today newagers, pagans and witches alike seek her help in many venues. She is a skilled warrior and can help win in battles. So many enlisted pagans now serving our country feel safe with her protection. She seems very fond of witches or anyone who researches funerary arts.

Remember the people of Ireland would be related however distant to Germans and French (all three bloodlines were at one time part of a larger single entity) so she may very well be an ancestral goddess for you.

SHE IS THE MOTHER OF MANY...SORROW, BATTLE, SLAUGHTER, INJUSTICE, MURDER, AND LIES, TO NAME JUST A FEW.

IT IS ERIS WHO HELPED CAUSE THE TROJAN WAR. IT WAS AT THE WEDDING OF THETIS AND THE MORTAL PRINCE, PELIUS. ERIS WAS VERY JEALOUS BECAUSE, AS USUAL, SHE WAS NOT INVITED. AND, ALL OF THE GODS AND GODDESSES WERE THERE...EXCEPT FOR HER. SO, SHE DEVISED A PLAN TO GET EVEN. SHE FLUNG HER "APPLE OF DISCORD" THROUGH THE ROOF...BUT, BEFOREHAND, SHE HAD WRITTEN "FOR THE FAIREST". NOW, IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT OF THE THREE GODDESSES--HERA, ATHENA, AND APHRODITE--EACH FELT THAT THE APPLE WAS MEANT FOR HER. THE THREE GODDESSES BROKE INTO A QUARREL, AND THE WEDDING WAS RUINED....WHILE ERIS SAT BACK AND WATCHED, SMILING CYNICALLY.

PARIS OF TROY WAS ASKED TO JUDGE WHO GOT THE GOLDEN APPLE. NOW, THE THREE GODDESSES WERE NOT ABOVE A BIT OF BRIBERY. HERA OFFERED HIM RICHES; ATHENA OFFERED WISDOM; AND APHRODITE OFFERED TO GET HELEN, A BEAUTIFUL GREEK PRINCESS, FOR HIM. PARIS PICKED APHRODITE, AND HELEN WAS ABDUCTED AND BROUGHT TO TROY. AND, WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED NEXT.

Nature Deity

Nature Deity Cover
The term nature deity typically refers to the concept of a god or goddesses in mythology associated with various perceived "forces of nature". They feature commonly in polytheistic religions, and may include characteristics of the mother goddess, Mother Nature or lord of the animals. Adherents may literally consider such deities to be divine beings that control particular natural phenomena. An objective view understands these to be mythological personifications of particular phenomena, such that attach personal qualities such as character and name to such phenomena, and conversely illustrate conceptual persons as owning particular and powerful traits.

Hanuman

Hanuman Cover
Hanuman is one of the most popular Hindu gods. The credit of popularizing Hanuman goes largely to the famous 16th century Hindu poet, Tulsidas. In art, Hanuman is almost always portrayed as a deity with an ape's face and long tail, wearing a lion cloth and an 'angoccha' is thrown over his shoulder.

Seen as above, Hanuman is kneeling on one leg as if receiving benediction from his lord and master Rama. In this canvas, Hanuman is shown with five faces. He is mentioned in texts as the eleventh incarnation of Shiva, who is also believed to have five heads, hence the Panchmukha Hanuman. On his main face can be seen an expression of humility and devotion. Surrounding it are those of Varaha, Garuda, Ashva and Simha. These heads symbolize the various attributes or powers of Hanuman. In their hands they hold various weapons of offence and defence.

The technique of oil painting has been put to perfection while achieving the hairy body of the ape; the gentle expression on all the faces and the blue background made exciting by numerous shades and tones of blue.
