Bendis (to tie) is the Great Moon Goddess of Thrace, whre women worked the land and tended to the sheep and the cattle. The Thracians revered the forces of nature, worshipped the sun, and believed in the immortality of the soul. Their mythology included Bendis, the sacred Horsemen, Dionysus and Orpheus. Bendis is similar to Artemis and at times, has been identified with Hecate. She is the diety of hunting, the moon, and the mysteries found within the soul. She was called the Fierce Huntress of the Two Spears.

She is represented as a full-figured woman with prominent cheek bones and curly hair. She is usually pictured between two sacred animals--either two deer or a buck and a snake. She is sometimes depicted as riding a doe, a bow in her hand and a quiver of arrows on her back. She hunts in the wild mountainous landscape. Legend has it that She provided religious strength to the Thracian women's revolt in which all the men of the island were slain.
