Ixtab Mayan Goddess Of Suicide Image
"IXTAB (SHE OF THE ROPE)" WAS THE MAYAN GODDESS OF SUICIDE. TO OUR MODERN SOCIETY, SHE MAY SEEM LIKE A TERRIBLE GODDESS, BUT IN ANCIENT MAYAN SOCIETY, SUICIDE WAS AN ACCEPTABLE WAY FOR ONE TO DIE; IT WAS BELIEVED TO LEAD THEM DIRECTLY INTO PARADISE. WHERE THEY COULD REST FROM THEIR LABORS AND ESCAPE FROM ALL SUFFERING AND WANT. IT WAS DUE TO THIS BELIEF THAT MANY DISTRAUGHT PEOPLE HANGED THEMSELVES. SHE IS ALSO CONSIDERED THE KEEPER OF THE SOULS OF WARRIORS AND WOMEN WHO DIED IN CHILDBIRTH, AND IT IS "IXTAB" WHO GUIDES THE SOULS TO HEAVEN AND CARES FOR THEM UNDER THE SHADE OF THE "WORLD TREE."

Ixtab is depicted as hanging from the sky by a rope which is coiled around her neck. Her eyes are closed in death and on one of her cheeks is a black circle which represents the discoloration of the flesh due to decomposition.

She is also associated with the deceitful goddess "XTABAY", WHO APPEARS AT NIGHT IN THE FORM OF A BEAUTIFUL LONG-HAIRED WOMAN OFFERING PLEASURE TO YOUNG MEN AND THEN LOSES THEM IN THE WOODS. THOSE WHO RETURN GO MAD PINING FOR HER LOVE WHILE OTHERS FIND THEMSELVES LOST FOREVER IN THE FOREST.

As a beautiful young goddess she took great delight in luring men into the forest, seducing them, and then vanishing. Some men stayed lost in the forest, some found their way home...insane, forever longing for her love.
