THE CERAM PEOPLE OF INDONESIA, AN AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY DEPENDENT ON SUCCESSFUL HARVESTING, HAVE A VERY INTERESTING CREATION MYTHS WHICH SPEAKS OF NINE FAMILIES WHO EMERGED FROM BUNCHES OF BANANAS AND CAME DOWN TO THE EARTH. THE STORY ITSELF NOT ONLY SPEAKS OF THE CREATION OF LIFE, BUT ALSO OF THE FIRST DEATH, THAT OF "HAINUWELE". (I ALWAYS LOVE THESE OLD CREATION MYTHS)

"SATENE" IS THE "UNDERWORLD" GODDESS OF INDONESIA. IT IS SAID THAT SHE WAS CREATED FROM AN UNRIPE BANANA WHEREAS ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE WERE BORN FROM RIPE BANANAS, BUT SHE WAS THE RULER OF THEM ALL. AS A GODDESS OF THE AFTERLIFE, "SATENE" RESIDES ON THE "NINTH MOUNTAIN IN THE UNDERWORLD," AND ALL SOULS MUST CLIMB THE OTHER EIGHT BEFORE THEY ARE PERMITTED TO LOOK UPON HER. WHOEVER WISHES TO REACH HER PLACE MUST DIE FIRST.

SHE WAS ANGERED AT THE KILLING OF HER SISTER GODDESS, "HAINUWELE", AND VOWED THAT SHE WOULD LEAVE THE EARTH.

"SINCE YOU HAVE KILLED," SHE SAID, "I WILL NO LONGER LIVE HERE. I SHALL LEAVE THIS VERY DAY. NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO COME TO ME THROUGH THIS DOOR."

SHE MADE A GATE, AND SUMMONED THE PEOPLE TO TELL THEM THAT IN REVENGE FOR THEIR KILLING "HAINUWELE", SHE WAS LEAVING THE WORLD, BUT THAT EVERYONE WAS WOULD FIRST HAVE TO PASS THROUGH THE GATE TO HER. Those who were able to pass through it were reincarnated into human beings. Those who could not were changed into animals or spirits. And, so it was that animals and spirits came into being. " Satene "that traveled to "Salahua", the Mountain of the Dead, where everyone who follows Her must die.
