"NUT" IS THE EGYPTIAN GODDESS OF THE STARS, THE 'LADY OF THE SKY AND NIGHTFALL'. AS MOTHER NIGHT, SHE REPRESENTS THE UNCONSCIOUS, THE MOON, THE FEMININE AND THE EMOTIONAL BODY. SHE RULES THE CELESTIAL BODIES AND THE BARRIERS THAT SEPARATES ORDER FROM PRIMEVAL CHAOS. SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF SHU, THE HOLDER OF THE SKY AND OF TEFNUT, THE GODDESS OF MOISTURE AND THE MOON. SHE IS THE WIFE OF GEB, THE EARTH GOD AND THE MOTHER OF OSIRIS, SET, ISIS, AND NEPHTHYS.

SHE IS TYPICALLY PORTRAYED AS A WOMAN WHO WEARS A VASE OF WATER ON HER HEAD, BUT MANY TIMES SHE IS SHOWN AS A WOMAN WHO HANDS AND FEET TOUCH THE GROUND SO THAT HER BODY FORMS A SEMI-CIRCLE. HER ARMS AND LEGS REPRESENT THE FOUR PILLARS ON WHICH THE SKY RESTS, AND SHE IS HELD UP BY HER FATHER, SHU. HER HUSBAND, GEB, LIES ON THE GROUND RECLINING ON ONE ELBOW WITH HIS KNEES IN THE AIR....DEPICTING THE HILLS AND VALLEYS OF THE LAND. DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS, SHE AND GEB ARE SEPARATED, BUT EACH EVENING SHE COME DOWN TO MEET HIM, AND THIS IS WHAT CAUSES THE DARKNESS. THE EGYPTIANS BELIEVED THAT IF THE SKY DARKENED, AND STORMS CAME DURING THE DAY, NUT HAD SOMEHOW SLIPPED CLOSER TO THE EARTH.

NUT WAS ALSO THE GODDESS OF THE DEAD AND THE PHAROAH WAS SAID TO ENTER HER BODY AFTER DEATH FROM WHICH HE WOULD LATER BE RESURRECTED. AND, IN ONE MYTH, NUT USES HER POWERS OF RESURRECTION AND REBIRTH TO GIVE BIRTH TO THE SUN EACH DAY...THE SUN GOD, RA, PASSES OVER HER BODY UNTIL HE REACHES HER MOUTH AT SUNSET. HE THEN PASSES INTO HER MOUTH AND THROUGH HER BODY TO BE REBORN THE NEXT MORNING. SHE GIVES BIRTH TO THE SUN IN THE EAST AND SWALLOWS IT IN THE WEST.
