Goddess Quiritis Image
QUIRITIS is the Sabine Goddess of protection. The Sabines were another of the pre-Roman peoples of central Italy. Quiritis watched over the clans of the Sabines and was also worshipped by the nearby Faliscans. She also protected mothers and married women. Quiritis' name, which means "spear," is also seen as CURITIS, and it was under this name that she was later assimilated with the Roman Goddess Juno. A temple to Juno Curitis was located on the Campus Martius in Rome, where the "quirite" or spearmen trained.

Tiamat Babylonian Goddess

Tiamat Babylonian Goddess Image
THIS DATE MARKS THE CELEBRATION OF THE BIRTH OF THE ANCIENT GODDESS, "TIAMAT", THE BABYLONIAN VERSION OF GODDESS AS THE GREAT MOTHER CREATRIX. SHE WAS THE EMBODIMENT OF THE ORIGINAL WATERY CHAOS OF THE UNIVERSE; SHE PERSONIFIED THE SALT WATER (OCEAN) AT THE BEGINNING OF TIME. SHE WAS THE "MOTHER OF ALL MOTHERS," BUT SHE WAS ALSO THE TEMPESTUOUS SEA FOR THERE WAS CHAOS AND TUMULT IN HER SOUL.

THE GODDESS "TIAMAT", ALONG WITH THE GOD "APSU ( IS REPRESENTED IN THE EPIC OF "MARDUK" AS EXISTING FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME. THE TWO DEITIES ARE VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL, ONE BEING THE MALE, THE OTHER THE FEMALE PRINCIPLE. BOTH PERSONIFY PRIMAEVAL CHAOS. AND IT WAS FROM THESE THAT CAME ORIGINALLY THE GODS.

"AND THE PRIMEVAL APSU, WHO BEGAT THEM,'AND MUMMU'-TIAMAT, THE MOTHER OF THEM ALL,"

THEY WERE FOLLOWED BY OTHER GENERATIONS OF GODS, WHOM THEY SOUGHT TO DESTROY. THIS RESULTED IN THE FIGHT OF "MARDUK "WITH THE PRIMEVAL GODDESS "TIAMAT." IN THIS BATTLE "MARDUK" IS THE CHAMPION AND REPRESENTATIVE OF THE OTHER GODS. HE SLAYS HER AND SPLITS HER IN HALVES LIKE A FISH, HALF OF WHICH HE USES TO MAKE A FIRMAMENT TO KEEP BACK THE CELESTIAL WATERS, AND THE OTHER HALF THE EARTH TO HOLD BACK THE SUBTERRANEAN WATERS.

THE ESSENCE OF THIS STORY IS THE VIOLENT CONFLICT BETWEEN THE OLDER MYTHOLOGIES OF THE MOTHER GODDESS, "TIAMAT," REPRESENTING PREHISTORY FERTILITY WORSHIP OF GODS AND GODDESS AND THE NEW MYTHS OF THE FATHER GODS, STRUGGLE FOR SUPREMACY BETWEEN THE TWO WITH THE EVENTUAL BIRTH OF PATRIARCHY.

Goddess Mama Ocllo Image
MAMA OCLLO is the Inca Goddess of fertility and spinning. She is said to be either one of the eight deities created by Viracocha, the supreme God of the Inca, or the daughter of Mama Quilla, Goddess of the moon, and her brother/husband Inti, God of the sun. In either case, she is the sister/wife of Manco Capac and with him she was sent to earth to teach the people. In the version where they are children of the sun, Inti gives Manco Capac a golden staff, telling him that wherever he is able to sink the staff into the ground with one push, on that spot he should build a temple to the sun. The city that they founded was Cuzco, which became the capital of the Inca empire. Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo gathered the people together at Cuzco, and Mama Ocllo taught the women how to spin and then to weave the threads they created into garments. Mama Ocllo's name, which means "mother fertility," is also seen as MAMA UQLLU, MAMA OCLLO HUACO, and MAMA OGLLO. The sometimes seen Mama Oello and Mama Oullo are misspellings.

The Naiades were generally thought to be daughters of an Okeanid mother (the 3000 daughters of Tethys and Okeanos, Goddesses of fresh water sources) and a Potamoi father (the 3000 sons of Tethys and Okeanos, Gods of the rivers). Naiades were particularly responsible for water that came up from the earth, such as springs, fountains, and wells. Alkinoe's spring was on Mount Lykaios in Arkadia; she and eight other nymphs helped Rhea in her labor with Zeus and nursed him as an infant. Alkinoe's name, which means "strong mind," is also seen as ALCINOE.

Goddess Gn Image
GN'a (pronounced NYA) is the Norse Goddess of the breeze. She is one of Frigg's handmaidens, and acts as her messenger and scout. Her horse, H'ofvarpnir (Hoof-thrower), is able to run across air and water, carrying Gn'a to her destinations. On one of her journeys, Gn'a came across a king who was in despair over his lack of an heir. She reported this back to Frigg, along with the fact that the king had always been a faithful worshipper, making offerings of fruit to the Gods. Frigg gave Gn'a a magical apple to take back to the king. When Gn'a returned to where she had seen the king, she transformed into a crow and perched in the tree above him. She dropped the apple down, and the king, realizing it was a gift from the Gods, took it home for his wife to eat. In answer to their prayers, she became pregnant and bore a son to carry on the family name. The son, Volsung, became a great hero, immortalized in the Volsunga Saga. Gn'a's name, which means "to fly high," is also seen as GNAA or LJOD.

Old Woman Of The Sea

Old Woman Of The Sea Image
OLD WOMAN OF THE SEA is the Salinan Goddess of water, particularly the ocean and its power. The Salinan tribes of California told a flood story as follows: At the beginning of the world, Eagle was chief among the animals. Old Woman of the Sea was jealous of his power and plotted against him. One day, she came on to the land with her basket, which held the sea. She poured the water out, covering almost all of the land--everything was covered except for the top of one mountain, where all the animals gathered. Eagle asked Puma to give him some of his whiskers, from which he made a lariat. Eagle lassoed the basket away from Old Woman of the Sea. Without her basket, Old Woman of the Sea died and the water stopped rising. Eagle then had Kingfisher dive down into the water and fetch some mud, from which he formed the world. Eagle then formed humans out of elderberry branches; when he breathed on them, they came to life and became the Salinan people.

Goddess Lela Image
LELA IS THE SLAVIC GODDESS OF THE FOREST; SHE TAKES CARE OF THE FOREST CREATURES AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO SEEK SHELTER IN THE WOODS. SHE IS A VERY OLD DEITY, AND HER CULT IS MOST LIKELY CONNECTED TO THAT PERIOD OF MATRIARCHY IN THE DISTANT PAST. SHE IS SIMILAR TO THE GREEK GODDESS, ARTEMIS, SINCE BOTH ARE ASSOCIATED WITH WILD FEMALE SEXUALITY DURING A TIME WHEN WOMEN WERE NOT TREATED AS SUBMISSIVE AND INFERIOR TO MEN.

AS THE PROTECTOR OF WOMEN, LELA IS STILL INVOKED BY SERBIAN WOMEN WHO FACE SERIOUS PROBLEMS. SHE IS A GODDESS OF SUMMER AND THE ETERNAL BRIDE OF THE SUN. IN SOME OF THE OLD SLAVIC TALES, SHE IS ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE SUN'S SISTER. IN THE TALES OF LELA, WE CAN ACTUALLY SEE HOW ONE OF THE SUPREME FEMALE DEITIES OF THE PAST WAS DETHRONED AND MADE TO SHARE HER DIVINE FEATURES WITH A MALE COUNTERPART. THE GODDESS OF MATRIARCHY WAS SLOWLY LOSING HER POWER.

"DAPHNE", A BEAUTIFUL RIVER NYMPH, WAS A DAUGHTER OF THE RIVER GOD, "PENEUS". SOME SOURCES SAY SHE WAS OF "GAIA" AND A POTENT ORACLE; BUT MOST AGREE THAT SHE WAS A HUNTRESS WHO DEDICATED HERSELF TO "ARTEMIS", GODDESS OF THE HUNT, AND, LIKE THE GODDESS, REFUSED TO MARRY, AND, ALTHOUGH PURSUED BY MANY ADMIRERS, SHE LOVED HER FREEDOM AND REJECTED EVERY LOVER, INCLUDING THE POWERFUL SON OF "ZEUS, APOLLO", WHO HAD FALLEN IN LOVE WITH HER.

NOW, ACCORDING TO THE MYTH, THIS PASSION HAD BEEN RAISED BY "CUPID," WHO, INCENSED THAT "APOLLO" HAD DISPUTED THE POWER OF HIS DARTS, SHOT "DAPHNE" WITH AN ARROW OF LEAD TO HARDEN HER HEART AND "APOLLO" WITH A GOLDEN ARROW TO MAKE HIM FALL IN LOVE WITH THE FIRST WOMAN THAT HE SAW. AND SO IT WAS THAT WHEN" APOLLO "SAW HER TAKING A WALK, HE WAS WAS LOVE STRUCK. "DAPHNE" FLED WITH "APOLLO" IN FAST PURSUIT, PROFESSING HIS NEVER-ENDING LOVE. "APOLLO" CONTINUED HIS PURSUIT, AND "DAPHNE," WEARING DOWN AND FEARFUL OF BEING CAUGHT, ENTREATED THE ASSISTANCE OF THE "GAIA" WHO TRANSFORMED HER INTO A LAUREL TREE TO PRESERVE HER INNOCENCE FOREVER.

NOTHING WAS LEFT OF "DAPHNE" EXCEPT HER SHINING LOVELINESS, YET EVEN AS A TREE, "APOLLO" LOVED HER, AND WHEN HE PLACED HIS HAND UPON THE TRUNK, HE COULD FEEL HER HEART AS IT CONTINUED TO BEAT. "APOLLO" THEN CUT OFF SOME BRANCHES AND MADE HIMSELF A WREATH IN MEMORY OF HER BEAUTY AND HIS LOVE FOR HER. THE STORY OF "DAPHNE" SERVES AS A REMINDER OF STAYING TRUE TO OUR IDEALS.

DAPHNE

Nothing but a laurel-tree.

Goddess Durga

Posted by Unknown

Goddess Durga Image
DURGA is the Hindu Goddess of war. She is the first of the Hindu Great Goddesses, formed by the female energies of the original male deities. A fearful demon, Mahishasura, had grown so powerful that he could not be defeated by God or man. Only the combined force of Shakti, the female aspect of the male Gods, would be able to triumph over Mahishasura. Knowing this, the Gods joined together to form the Goddess they called Durga. Each contributed part of their magic to her creation-Shiva created her face, Chandra (the moon God) formed her breasts, Indra her torso, Vishnu her ten arms, Varuna (God of oceans) her legs and thighs, Brahma her feet, Agni (God of fire) her three eyes, and Vayu (God of wind) her ears. The Gods also gave her divine weapons with which to fight-a trident, a disc, a conch shell, a spear, a bow and arrows, a thunderbolt, a bell, a sword, a shield, an axe, armor, and a lion to ride on.

Armed with the power of the Gods, Durga rode out to meet Mahishasura. The demon was able to change forms, and each time it appeared that Durga had him defeated, he would change and his vigor would be renewed. Throughout the battle, Durga remained calm and untroubled. Finally, after 9 days of fighting, she beheaded the demon, and peace was restored.

The Erinneyes

The Erinneyes Image
THE THREE "ERINNEYES "OR "FURIES "ARE AMONG THE MOST ANCIENT AND FEARSOME OF THE GREEK GODDESSES; THESE ARE THE GODDESSES WHO AVENGED THE CRIMES AGAINST THE NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS. THEY RESIDE IN THE UNDERWORLD. WE FIND THEM IN MANY OF THE EARLY CREATION MYTHS, LONG BEFORE THE ZEUS CYCLE. THUS, IT IS ASSUMED THAT THE ERINNEYES ROSE WITH TITANS FROM A UNION BETWEEN AIR AND MOTHER EARTH. SOME SAY THEY AROSE FROM THE BLOOD OF THE MUTILATED URANUS (OURANOS) AND OTHERS SAY THEY ARE THE DAUGHTER OF NYX (NIGHT).

WHOEVER BE THEIR PARENTS, THEY ARE A TRINITY OF DARK GODDESSES WHO PUNISH THE WICKED ON EARTH AS WELL AS IN THE UNDERWORLD. THEY ARE PARTICULARLY AGGRESSIVE AGAINST MURDERERS...ESPECIALLY THE MURDER OF A MOTHER BY HER SON....AS WELL AS CRIMES AGAINST THE GODS AND PERJURY. THE WRATH OF THE ERINNEYES MANIFESTED ITSELF IN MANY WAYS; THE MOST SEVERE OF THESE WAS THE INSANITY INFLICTED UPON THOSE WHO SLAY THEIR PARENTS.

THERE WERE THREE ERINNEYES. THEY ARE:

TSIPHONE--THE AVENGER OF MURDER OR RETALIATION

MEGARA--THE JEALOUS ONE

ALECTO--THE UNRESTING

AS PROTECTORS OF THE RIGHTS OF THE MATRIARCHAL BLOOD LINE, THEY DID NOT FARE VERY WELL WITH THE CHANGE TO A MORE PATRIARCHAL SOCIETY...AND BECAUSE THEY WERE SO ANCIENT AND SO DEEPLY WOVEN INTO THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE, IT WAS MUCH EASIER TO TO TRANSFORM THEM INTO THE KINDLY EUMENIDES, AN EARLIER TRIAD OF GODDESSES FROM THE UNDERWORLD WHO PUSHED EDIBLE PLANTS THROUGH THE GROUND AS GIFTS TO HUMANITY. FROM THEN ON, IT WAS THE ERINNEYES WHO CONTROLLED THE FORCES OF GROWTH THAT WORKED IN THE PLANT KINGDOM FROM BELOW. THUS, THEY WERE ABLE TO REMAIN AS FEMININE EARTH FORCES RATHER THAN THE MASCULINE FORCES WORKING FROM ABOVE IN THE SUNLIGHT.

Offerings to Nirrti are often black, such as black grain and stones, or diseased and malformed animals, and were usually intended to keep her away from rituals rather than to invite her to join in. As time went on, Nirrti was given male attributes as well as female, and thus also became associated with "third sex" and transgender people. Nirrti's name means "destruction."

Goddess Neith Image
NEITH is the most ancient of Egyptian Goddesses. She rules over war and weaponry, weaving, and is seen as the creator of both Gods and humans. She is "the eldest, mother of the gods, who illuminated the first face." It was said that Neith wove the world on her loom. Her emblems of a bow and crossed arrows show her status as a a warrior Goddess; hunters also asked her blessing on their weapons. Neith's rule over weaving led her to a function in the underworld as well--she provided the bandages and shrouds used in mummification. She was most often depicted in human form, but could also take the form of a cow (symbolizing the nursing mother) or a serpent (representing a protector of the king). Epithets associated with Neith include "MISTRESS OF THE BOW", "RULER OF ARROWS", "THE GREAT COW", "THE GREAT FLOOD", "THE NURSE OF CROCODILES", and "MISTRESS OF MENDES".

Welsh Goddess Arianrhod

Welsh Goddess Arianrhod Image
Arianrhod is a Welsh Goddess whose name means "Silver Wheel" or "Silver Circle". She is the goddess of the moon, fate, and fertility. She ruled over the stars and lived in an astral palace called Caer Arianrhod: this is also known as the constellation Corona Borealis. It never sets below the horizon. She was the daughter of Don and lived in Her palace with Her husband, Nwyvre, and although She is said to be a virgin goddess, they had two sons--Llew and Dylan. What is interesting here is that as with many of the goddesses and tales of old, sexual behavior had nothing to do with the concept of virginity.

Caer Arianrhod was the destination of the souls of the dead...where they resided between their incarnations. Arianrhod's "Silver Wheel" is the turning wheel of fate. It has also been viewed as the Divine spinning wheel, the wheel which weaves the web of destiny. She is called upon to help us with our past life memories. It is unfortunate for us that much of Her early history has been lost, but we do know that in later myths, She was relegated to the role of a sorceress...perhaps this was a result of the rise of patricarchy. Legend also has it that Caer Arianrhod is supposed to lioe submerged in Caernarvon Bay and is still remembered to this day.

"ARIANRHOD GIVES US THE IDEA OF THE SPINNING WHEEL OR WEAVING THE TAPESTRY OF OUR LIVES. SILVER IS HER COLOR, AND WHEELS, CIRCLES, AND STARS CAN ALL BE USED AS SYMBOLS RO HER. CREATE A SILVER WHEEL TO HANG IN YOUR ROOM TO CATCH THE CANDLELIGHT. LOOK UP INTO THE SKY FOR AT LEAST A FEW MINUTES EVER NIGHT. OBSERVE THE PHASES OF THE MOON, AND LEARN TO RECOGNIZE SOME OF THE CONSTELLATIONS. YOU CAN HONOR THIS GREAT GODDESS SIMPLY BY ENJOYING THE BEAUTY OF THE HEAVENS ABOVE. "
