Ha Puu Hawaiian Dragon Goddess

Ha Puu Hawaiian Dragon Goddess Image
"HA PUU" IS THE HAWAIIAN DRAGON GODDESS AND THE GUARDIAN OF IMMORTALITY AND MAGIC. SHE WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL DRAGON GODS THAT HAD BEEN BROUGHT TO HAWAII AND SETTLED ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU. "HA PU'U" DIVINES HER MAGIC BY TALKING WITH THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD, ANCESTRAL GUIDES ON THE PATH OF LIFE. ALONG WITH THE GODDESS "HAU-OLA", SHE GUARDS THE CLIFF AT THE END OF THE "NUUANU VALLEY." EVENTUALLY, THEY ASSUMED THE FORM OF LARGE STONES, AND IT WAS CUSTOMARY TO LEAVE FLOWERS AS OFFERINGS. MOTHERS PLACED THE DRIED UMBILICAL CORDS OF THEIR NEWBORN UNDER THE "HA PU'U'S" STONE TO PROTECT THEIR BABIES FROM EVIL: "O HAPUU, ACCEPT THE UMBILICAL CORD OF MY CHILD. GRANT HIM HEALTH AND EVERY GOOD."

UNFORTUNATELY THE STONES WERE DESTROYED BY A BULLDOZER IN 1953 WHEN A ROAD INTO THE VALLEY WAS BUILT.
