AMENTET is the Egyptian Goddess of the west, which is where the underworld was said to be. The direction west has often been associated with death, since that is where the sun "dies" every day. Amentet sometimes took the form of a hawk who lived in a tree at the edge of the desert. From here, she could watch the gates of the underworld. When a newly deceased person came to the gates, she would welcome them with a drink of water. Her name is also seen as AMENTI (the hidden one) or IMENTET.
