THE LEGEND OF "CLIODNA "OF THE FAIR HAIR IS A WONDERFULLY ROMANTIC TALE IN CELTIC MYTHOLOGY. SHE IS THE GODDESS OF THE SEA, THE AFTERLIFE, AND AS THE CELTIC APHRODITE, A GODDESS OF BEAUTY. ONE OF THE TUATHA DE DANANN, RESIDES IN TIR TAINGAIRE, THE LAND OF PROMISE, AN OTHERWORLD WHERE THERE IS NO VIOLENCE OR DEATH. CLIODNA IS THE DAUGHTER OF GEBANN, THE CHIEF DRUID.

SHE ALSO POSSESSES HEALING QUALITIES AS ONE WOULD EXPECT FROM A GODDESS WITH WATERY ASSOCIATIONS, AND LEGEND HAS IT THAT SHE TRAVELS WITH THREE MAGICAL BIRDS WHO SANG SO SWEETLY THAT THEY HEALTH SICK WHILE THEY SLEEP. CLIODNA IS THE MATRON OF THE WAVES, ESPECIALLY THE LARGE WAVES AND THE NINTH WAVE OF EVERY SERIES OF WAVES THAT BREAK THE SHORE WHICH IS SAID TO EMBODY HER. SEA BIRDS, SAND DOLLARS, ABALONE SHELLS ARE ALL SACRED TO THIS GODDESS.

THEY SAY SHE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ON EARTH, AND SHE OFTEN TAKES MORTAL MEN FOR LOVERS, BUT BEING LOVED BY CLIODNA CAN MEAN BEING LOVED TO DEATH FOR SHE TAKES THEM TO THE OTHERWORLD; HENCE, THEY ARE NEVER SEEN AGAIN. IN ONE OF HER LOVE STORIES, SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH THE HANDSOME CIABHAN AND THE TWO TRIED TO RUN AWAY TOGETHER. THE PAIR MANAGED TO LAND THE SHORE OF IRELAND, BUT AS CIABHAN WENT TO GO HUNTING, THE JEALOUS MANNAN, THE SEA GOD, CAME AFTER THEM. HE PLAYED MUSIC FOR CLIODNA UNTIL HE PUT HER INTO AN ENCHANTED SLEEP; HE SENT A HUGE WAVE THAT DREW HER BACK HOME TO THE OTHERWORLD; CLIABHAN WAS DROWNED BY THE SAME WAVE. SHE WAS THEN NEVER ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE OTHERWORLD AGAIN.

THE IRISH LANDMARK, TONN CLIODNA WAS NAMED IN HER HONOR.

IN THE KAEVALA,THE TALE OF THE OLD FINNISH GODS, WE MEET ILMATAR, THE GODDESS OF CREATION. SHE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE "DAUGHTER OF AIR", SHE WHO CREATED THE UNIVERSE. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF ILMA, THE SKY, AND AT THE BEGINNING OF TIME, WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING BUT AIR AND WATER, ILMATAR WOULD FLOAT THROUGHT THE EITHER. BUT, ONE DAY SHE CAME DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS AND RESTED ON THE WATERS. BECAUSE THERE WAS NO LAND, SHE FLOATED ON THE WATERS FOR SEVEN CENTURIES. SHE LOOKED AROUND AND SAW NOTHING...AND SHE WAS LONELY.

NOW, ILMATAR WAS A VIRGIN GODDESS AND HAD NEVER BEEN TOUCHED BY ANOTHER BEING, BUT ONE NIGHT, AFTER THE SEA HAD LASHED OUT IN A TREMENDOUS STORM, SHE FOUND HERSELF MYSTERIOUSLY IMPREGNATED BY THE PRIMORDIAL WATERS. AND, SHE REMAINED PREGNANT FOR MANY YEARS...UNABLE TO GIVE BIRTH.

THEN, ONE DAY, WHILE SHE WAS FLOATING, PREGNANT AND IN GREAT DISCOMFORT, A CELESTIAL EAGLE FLEW DOWN AND BUILT A NEST ON HER KNEE. THE POOR BIRD WAS PREGNANT AND HAD BEEN DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LAND. THE BIRD LAY SEVEN EGGS WHICH EVENTUALLY FELL FROM HER KNEE AND HATCHED OPEN. AND OUT OF THESE EGGS CAME THE EARTH, THE SUN, THE MOON, AND THE CLOUDS. ILMATER WATCHED WITH WONDER AS THE WORLD WAS FORMED. DELIGHTED THAT SHE NOW HAD SOMETHING TO WORK WITH, SHE BEGAN A LONG PERIOD OF SHAPING. SHE FORMED THE ROCKS AND THE BAYS, THE SHORES, AND THE OCEAN DEPTHS. AND, WHEN HER WORK WAS COMPLETED, SHE FELT A STIRRING INSIDE AND GAVE BIRTH TO VAINMOINEN, THE WORLD'S FIRST SHAMAN. AND HE WENT ON TO COMPLETE THE CREATION THAT ILMATER HAD BEGUN.

SHE IS A SEASONAL GODDESS OF THE SUMMER SOLSTICE WHO CONTROLS THE MAGICAL PROPERTIES OF PLANTS AND RULES OVER ALL OF THE PLANTS OF THE EARTH. SHE TEACHES HER FOLLOWERS THE PROPER MAGICAL USES OF VEGETATION IN SPELLCASTING AND RITUALS. HER CULT PRESERVED AN EXTENSIVE LORE OF MAGICAL PLANTS AND HERBS WHICH GAVE MANKIND THE POWER TO READ MINDS, CONTROL EVIL SPIRITS, AND FIND HIDDEN TREASURES. HER SACRED PLANT IS THE FERN.

KUPULO PERSONIFIES THE BOTH MAGICAL AND SPIRITUAL POWERS INHERENT IN WATER; HER DEVOTEES WORSHIPPED HER WITH RITUAL BATHS AND OFFERINGS OF FLOWERS CAST UPON THE WATER...AND, SINCE FIRE, AS WELL AS WATER, IS ASSOCIATED WITH PURIFICATION, CELEBRANTS ALSO DANCED AROUND AND LEAPED OVER BONFIRES. IT WAS ALSO CUSTOMARY FOR THE REVELERS TO CREATE AN EFFIGY OF KUPULO WHICH, AT THE END OF THE HOLIDAY WAS TORN APART AND TOSSED INTO THE BONFIRES OR CAST INTO POOLS OF WATER.
