Amaterasu was the Sun goddess and supreme deity of the oldest of the Japanese religions--Shinto. Her name means "Great Shining Goddess of Heaven. She was a beautiful and compassionate goddess who ruled both the sun and the heavenly fields of rice that fed the Japanese people. She was the daughter of Izaanami and Izanagi, the divine couple who created the lands, and legend has it that she was the divine ancestor of the Japanese imperial family. She and Her brothers, Susano-o, the storm god and Tsuki-yomi, the moon god, shared the power of governing the universe. As the sun goddess, she was responsible for illuminating the world and for insuring the fertility of the rice fields.

Now, according to one myth, Susano-o was a bothersome, uncontrollable character and very jealous of his beautiful sister's power and popularity. It is said that one day, in a drunken rampage, he trampled all of Her rice fields, filled in all of Her irritation ditches, and then threw excrement into Her palace. He slaughtered a young horse and threw its carcass at the goddesses' handmaidens. Amaterasu, depressed and grieving over Her brother's actions, refused to return to the heavens and crept away into a dark cave in the mountains, refusing to come out. She closed off the entrance with an enormous stone.

Without Her, there was no sun, and the world lay in darkness. The rice fields lay dying as the endless night continued, the people grew hungry. All of the gods and goddesses came to the entrance of Her cave and pleaded with Her to come out, but, alas, Her sadness was so great that their pleas went unanswered. It was then that the goddess Uzume decided to try a different tactic--laughter. She began to perform a divine striptease. Hearing all of the music and laughter, She became so curious about what was going on that She had to see what was going on. She crept to the entranceway of the cave. As She crept further out, the gods captured Her and sealed the entrance to the cave so that She could not return, but by now, She didn't care. Her grief was alleviated by all of the fun and good humor surrounding Her, and eventually, She returned home and the sun once again shined across the earth.

The triumph of the sun goddess over the storm god secured Her rule over the world. On December 21st, the Japanese Winter Solstice festivities will celebrate Her emergence from cave...

The Charge Of The God 5

The Charge Of The God 5 Cover
This is the second Charge of the God I have.

Listen to the words of the God, who is the son, brother, lover, and consort of the Lady:

I am the fleet deer in the forest,
I am the beach which receives the waves,
I am the sun which warms the earth.
I am the Lord of the Spiral Dance of Life,
Death and Rebirth, the gentle reaper,
the Winter stag and the Spring fawn.
All things are of me, for
I am of the Goddess, opposite, yet not opposing.
I bring birth forth from the womb that is a tomb,
for I am the seed which fertilizes.
I am abundant Life, for
I am the grain that grows and
I am death, the harvest in the Fall.
And I am rebirth after darkness, for
I am the seed that springs forth anew.
I am fertility, the spreader of Life, and
I am the Lord of Death, which adds value to life.
I am the Guardian of the gate between Life and Death.
I am King of the Underworld, where no living being may venture, but I am also the King of Rebirth, turning the tomb into a womb.
I bring love and strength, peace and passion, hope and joy, for
I am the gentle lover in the night.
All that I am comes from the Great Mother,
the Divine Star Goddess, who is Mother of us all.

"IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, CALLISTO "WAS A NYMPH; HER NAME MEANS "MOST BEAUTIFUL", "AND SHE WAS TRUE TO HER NAME...A LOVELY YOUNG MAIDEN. SHE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH ARTEMIS, THE GODDESS OF THE HUNT, AND, AS SUCH, NOT ONLY HUNTED WITH THE GODDESS, BUT ALSO PROMISED TO REMAIN A VIRGIN JUST AS THE GODDESS HERSELF, AND CALLISTO HELD THESE IDEALS FAITHFULLY. AS A RESULT, SHE SOON BECAME ONE OF ARTEMIS'S FAVORITES.

THE, ONE DAY, HER BEAUTY HAPPENED TO CATCH THE EYE OF ZEUS, AND HE KNEW IMMEDIATELY THAT HE JUST HAD TO HAVE HER. BUT, HE ALSO KNEW THAT AS ARTEMIS COMPANION, SHE HAD TAKEN THE VOW OF CHASTITY, SO HE KNEW THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO RESORT TO DECEPTION. HE CAME TO THE BEAUTIFUL NYMPH DISGUISED AS ARTEMIS AND GAINED HER CONFIDENCE SO THAT SHE LET HER GUARD DOWN.

CALLISTO BECAME PREGNANT AS A RESULT; SHE TRIED DESPERATELY TO HIDE IT FROM ARTEMIS, BUT EVENTUALLY, SHE COULD HIDE IT NO MORE. WHEN ARTEMIS SAW HER SWOLLEN BELLY, SHE THREW A FIT AND BANISHED CALLISTO TO HAVE HER CHILD ALONE....AND IT WAS THEN THAT THE JEALOUS HERA DECIDED TO TAKE HER REVENGE. SHE GRABBED CALLISTO BY THE HAIR AND FLUNG HER TO THE GROUND, TRANSFORMING THE YOUNG NYMPH INTO A BEAR. HERA THEN WENT TO ARTEMIS AND TRIED TO CONVINCE HER THAT CALLISTO WAS A MERE NORMAL BEAR AND THAT THE GODDESS WOULD SLAY HER; BUT HERMES INTERVENED AND SAVED THE BABE, ARCAS (BEAR), BY TAKING HIM FROM FROM HIS MOTHER'S WOMB...THEN BRINGING THE BABE TO HIS OWN MOTHER, MAIA, TO BE RAISED. ZEUS ALSO CAME TO CALLISTO'S RESCUE AND TURNED HER INTO THE CONSTELLATION, ARCTOS...THE GREAT SHE BEAR OR URSA MAJOR. THIS WAS A SIGN OF HIS LOVE FOR HER; SOON THEREAFTER, SHE WAS JOINED BY HER SON WHO BECAME THE LITTLE BEAR.

AND STILL, HERA CONTINUED TO HOLD A GRUDGE AGAINST CALLISTO; SO, SHE WENT TOTETHYS AND OCEANUS AND PERSUADED THEM NOT TO ALLOW CALLISTO TO ENTER THEIR REALM...THE OCEAN. AND SO IT IS THAT CALISTO MUST FOREVER CIRCLE THE NORTH STAR AND NEVER BE ABLE TO SET OVER THE HORIZON...AND THIS IS WHY THE GREAT BEAR AND THE LITTLE BEAR ARE CURSED TO CIRCLE THE SKIES, NEVER TO DIP BELOW THE HORIZON TO FEEL AN OCEAN WAVE.
