IN MONGOLIAN MYTHS "GODESSES" WERE BOTH SHAMANS THEMSELVES." ETUGEN" IS AN ANCIENT MONGOLIAN GODDESS OF THE EARTH, A "SHAMANIST "GODDESS OF FERTILITY WHO RULES OVER GRASS AND ANIMALS. SHE CONTROLS THE FERTILITY OF THE HERDS AND CROPS, AND BELOW HER ARE INNUMERABLE LESSER SPIRITS, SOME OF WHICH ARE THE GHOSTS OF THE MONGOL ANCESTORS. HER NAME COMES FROM "OTUKE"N, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN; SHE IS ALSO CALLED "ITUGEN", AND THE NAMES FOR SHAMANS, ESPECIALLY FEMALE SHAMANS, ARE VARIATIONS OF HER NAME.

ALTHOUGH THERE IS LITTLE RECORDED ABOUT THIS GODDESS, THE MONGOLS DEPICT HER AS A YOUNG WOMAN RIDING ATOP A GRAY BULL. SHE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A VIRGINAL MOTHER WHO WATCHES OVER THE HEALTH OF OUR PLANET, AND WHEN SHE BELIEVES THAT THE EARTH NEEDS TO BE PURIFIED DUE TO THE ACTIONS OF US HUMANS, SHE WILL CAUSE AND EARTHQUAKE BY SHAKING HERSELF TO RID THE EARTH OF ALL ITS IMPURITIES. MONGOL FAMILIES KEPT IMAGES OF HER, AND SHE IS SOMETIMES DEPICTED AS A GROUP OF FEMININE ELEMENTAL SPIRITS. HER DAUGHTER, "UMAI", IS THE WOMB GODDESS AND GODDESS OF THE BODY SOULS ("AMI"), SIMILAR TO THE WORLD TREE. SHE AND HER DAUGHTER ARE APPEALED TO FOR FERTILITY.

TREES ARE A MANIFESTATION OF "MOTHER EARTHS "POWER, AND WORSHIP FOR HER MAY BE PERFORMED AT TREES WHICH SUITABLY REFLECT HER POWER AND BEAUTY.

"ARDUINNA "IS THE CELTIC "GODDESS" OF THE MOON, FORESTS AND THE WILD WOODS. SHE RULES OVER THE WOODLANDS AND THE ANIMALS. SHE PROTECTS HUMAN HUNTERS AND WILD BOARS, MAINTAINING A SACRED BALANCE BETWEEN THEM. SHE IS THE PRESIDING divinity over the forest of "Ardennes", once a heavily forested region. Goddess Siduri Image
SIDURI is the Babylonian Goddess of wine and beer, merry-making, and wisdom. She lives in a tavern on the shore of the sea, beyond which is the Land of Life. Also called SIDURI SABITU (the innkeeper), she is referred to in the "The Epic of Gilgamesh "as "THE REFRESHER" or "THE GIRL WHOSE DRINKS REFRESH THE SOUL". She advises Gilgamesh to give up his quest for immortality in the wake of the death of his companion, Enkidu. On first seeing him coming towards her tavern, Siduri barred the door to Gilgamesh, because of his unkempt appearance. When he told her his identity and of his travels to find the immortal human Utnapishtim, she invited him in and shared her wisdom:

"You shall not find the life you seek,

For at the creation of mankind

The gods allotted Death to men.

They retained life in their own hands.

Gilgamesh, let your belly be full,

Make you merry by day and by night.

Make everyday a day of feasting and of rejoicing

Dance and play, by day, by night,

Let your clothes be sparkling and fresh

Wash your hair

Bathe your body

Attend to the babe who holds you by the hand

Take your wife and let her rejoice in you.

For this is the lot of mankind to enjoy

But immortal life is not for men."

"from The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet X"
