Greek Naiad Alke Image
ALKE (pronounced AL-kee) is one of the Greek Naiades. The Naiades were generally thought to be daughters of an Okeanid mother (the 3000 daughters of Tethys and Okeanos, Goddesses of fresh water sources) and a Potamoi father (the 3000 sons of Tethys and Okeanos, Gods of the rivers); in Alke's case, her father was Saggarios, God of the River Saggarios in Phrygia. Naiades were particularly responsible for water that came up from the earth, such as springs, fountains, and wells. Alke's name, which means "strength," is also seen as ALCE.

Zemyna Goddess Of Spring And Rebirth Image
"ZEMYNA" IS A BALTIC GODDESS OF SPRING AND REBIRTH. SHE CREATES LIFE OUT OF HERSELF, PERFORMING THE MIRACLE OF RENEWAL; HENCE, SHE WAS A GODDESS OF THE "SPRING." ALL LIFE CAME FROM HER. AS A FERTILITY GODDESS, HER BLESSING WAS INVOKED AT THE BIRTH OF EVERY CHILD. SHE DIDN'T JUST PRESIDE OVER HUMAN FERTILITY, THOUGH; SHE WAS THE PERSONIFICATION OF THE EARTH ITSELF AND ITS MYSTERIOUS LIFE FORCE. EVERY FLOWER, TREE, AND WEED WAS WATCHED OVER AND CARED FOR BY THIS GODDESS.

SHE IS THE DAUGHTER OF THE SUN GODDESS, "SAULE "AND WAS CALLED "BLOSSOMER" OR "FLOWER GIVER" IN THE BALTIC POEMS WHICH HONOR HER. BIRCH, MAPLE, OAK, AND LINDEN TREES ARE HER PREFERRED TREES LILIES WERE ALSO LOVED BY THIS GODDESS AS THIS IS WHERE THE SPIRIT OF YOUNG GIRLS RESIDED. IN EVERY YARD, ONE OF THESE TREES WOULD BE PLANTED IN A PLACE OF HONOR AND THEN REGARDED AS A WAY TO CLIMB TO HEAVEN.

THE TOP OF THE TREE WAS CONSIDERED THE MOST SACRED PART AS THIS WAS CLOSEST TO HEAVEN. OFFERINGS OF FOOD WERE REVERENTLY PLACED IN FRONT OF STONE NEAR THIS HOLY TREE OR TIED TO ONE OF THE BRANCHES. SOMETIMES THESE OFFERINGS WERE THROWN INTO A STREAM OF FLOWING WATER AS GRATITUDE FOR HER BOUNTY.

Goddess Kupala Image
KUPALA (pronounced koo-PAH-lah) is the Slavic Goddess of water, herbs, and magic. Her festival takes place on the day of the summer solstice. Her worshippers bathed themselves in rivers and springs on this day to purify themselves. They also brought offerings of flowers, which they set adrift on the rivers. Another means of purification was jumping through bonfires built in Kupala's name. Her name means "to bathe" and was also sometimes seen as KUPALO. With the advent of Christianity, her festival was assimilated with another that purified through bathing, that of John the Baptist, known to the Slavs as Ivan Kupala.
