Happy Hallowe'en! Or, if you follow the Old Ways, Samhain Blessings! For those who don't know, Hallowe'en is the Christianized version of Samhain (pronounced SAW-when), which starts at sunset tonight and runs until sunset tomorrow. It is the end of the Celtic year, when all the harvests have been taken in and the God dies, to be reborn again at Yule. It is also the night when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest, and the spirits walk with us. I always feel like there is an extra hum in the air on this night, to be respected but not feared. It reminds me that sometimes we have to let go of the old in order to welcome in the new.
HEKATE (pronounced HEK-ah-tee) is the Greek Goddess of the crossroads and doorways. Hekate is cousin to Zeus, lord of the Greek Gods, and is greatly respected by him. She holds power over all three regions of the world: land, sky, and sea. Many aspects of Hekate are seen in triplicate-she is often depicted as a pillar with three heads and six arms. One of each set of arms hold a torch, and the others hold a key, a rope, and a dagger. The key is the key to the underworld, with which Hekate unlocks secrets and knowledge. The rope symbolizes the cord of rebirth and renewal. The dagger she uses to cut through delusions.
Statues of Hekate were often placed at the gates to a city and at doorways to houses, and were seen as protecting the inhabitants. Eventually, this role in keeping out evil spirits led to the perception that Hekate could also allow the evil spirits to enter if she chose. She thus became acknowledged as the guardian of the veil between the worlds, between the material and the spiritual. This also came from her role as mistress of crossroads, where she protected travelers from taking the wrong path.
Hekate's name means "powerful from afar", and is also seen as HECATE and HEKAT. Epithets and titles for her include:

SO, AT FIRST, THE INDIANS SENT CANOES WHICH WERE LADEN WITH FRUIT, FLOWERS, AND GAME OVER THE FALLS TO SATIATE "HINUM", BUT THE DYING CONTINUED. IN DESPERATION, THEY BEGAN TO SACRIFICE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE TRIBE DURING A CEREMONIAL FEAST ONCE A YEAR...AND IT JUST SO HAPPENED THAT ONE YEAR, "LELAWALA "WAS CHOSEN.
THE TRIBE PLACED "LELAWALA", WEARING A WHITE DOESKIN ROBE AND A WREATH OF WOODLAND FLOWERS IN HER HAIR, INTO A WHITE BIRCH CANOE AND SENT HER OVER THE WATERFALL...TO DIE. HER FATHER, HEARTBROKEN OVER THE LOSS OF HIS DAUGHTER, JUMPED INTO HIS OWN CANOE AND FOLLOWED HER. BUT, UNLIKE THE OTHER GIRLS, "LELAWA" DID NOT DIE FOR IN THE SPIRIT WORLD, BOTH OF "HINUM'S" SONS CAUGHT HER IN THEIR ARMS BECAUSE BOTH WANTED TO MARRY HER. SHE AGREED TO MARRY THE ONE ONE SON WHO TOLD HER WHY THE TRIBE WAS DYING; HENCE, IT WAS THE YOUNGER SON WHO TOLD HER OF A GIANT WATER SNAKE THAT THAT WAS POISONING THEIR DRINKING WATER. THE SNAKE WOULD THEN DEVOUR THE DEAD.
SO, "LELAWALA "WENT TO HER PEOPLE IN SPIRIT AND TOLD THEM IN THEIR DREAMS TO SET A TRAP TO DESTROY THE SERPENT. THE INDIAN BRAVES WENT OUT MORTALLY WOUNDED SNAKE ON ITS NEXT VISIT TO THE VILLAGE, AND WHILE RETURNING TO HIS LAIR ON THE RIVER, THE SERPENT CAUGHT HIS HEAD ON ONE SIDE OF THE RIVER AND HIS TAIL ON THE OTHER SIDE FORMING A SEMI-CIRCLE WHICH TODAY WE KNOW OF AS "HORSESHOE FALLS". AND "LELAWALA" RETURNED TO THE CAVE OF THE GOD WHERE SHE REIGNS AS MAID OF THE MIST. HER SPIRIT STILL LIVES IN THE CAVES BENEATH "NIAGARA FALLS."

His brother Xolotl was the planet Venus as the evening star. Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli was a manifestation of Quetzalcoatl.

AIDOS (pronounced AY-dose) is the Greek Goddess of modesty. She is the daughter of Prometheus, the Titan God of planning, and she acted as a conscience, to keep men from doing wrong. Aidos was often in the company of Nemesis, Goddess of retribution, who would punish those who failed to heed the guidance of Aidos. Her name, which means "modesty," is also seen as AEDOS, and she was also called AISKHYNE or AISCHYNE, which means "shame."
