IT IS AT THIS DARK TIME OF THE YEAR THAT WE BEGIN WAITING IN EARNEST FOR THE BUTTERFLY MAIDEN, A HOPI KACHINA THAT GOVERNS THE SPRING, TO ARRIVE. KACHINAS' ARE SUPERNATURAL BEINGS WHO CONTROL NATURE AND HAVE THE SPIRITS OF LIVING THINGS SUCH AS ANIMALS AND PLANTS WITHIN THEM. SOME KACHINAS ALSO HOLD THE SPIRITS OF THE NON-LIVING AS WELL--WIND, RAIN, THUNDER, LIGHTNING, CLOUDS, ETC.

ALTHOUGH MOST KACHINAS' ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE GODS, BUTTERFLY MAIDEN IS BELIEVED TO BE A FERTILITY GODDES WHO BRINGS ABOUT TRANSFORMATION, NEW BEGINNINGS, AND FRESH STARTS IN LIFE. SHE IS OFTEN PICTURED AS A YOUNG NATIVE AMERICAN WOMAN DRESSED IN AND SURROUNDED BY BUTTERFLIES. SHE LIVES WITHIN THE PLANTS, ANIMALS, AND FEMALE ANCESTORS WHO LINK THE HUMAN WITH THE DIVINE. IT IS SAID THAT SHE POLLINATED THE WORLD WITH OUR NIGHTTIME DREAMS, CARRYING THE LIFE FORCE FROM DREAMTIME INTO REALITY; IN ESSENCE, SHE MAKES OUR DREAMS COME TRUE. SHE IS A CREATIVE FORCE AND A SYMBOL OF REBIRTH AND REGENERATION.

IN THE NATIVE AMERICAN WORLD, WE FIND THAT EACH ANIMAL, PLANT, AND INSECT IS SAID TO HAVE ENERGY AND SPIRIT. THEIR HEALING QUALITIES ARE REFERRED TO AS MEDICINE. BECAUSE BUTTERFLIES ARE DEEPLY SYMBOLIC OF OUR OWN UNIQUE STRUGGLE TO GROW, BUTTERFLY MEDICINE REPRESENTS TRANSFORMATION AND OUR PERSONAL POWER TO HEAL AND TRANSFORM OURSELVES. THE BUTTERFLY BEGINS ITS LIFE AS AN UNAPPEALING LARVA WHICH ONE DAY GOES INTO SECLUSION AND EMERGES AS A BEAUTIFUL WINGED CREATURE WHICH SPREADS THE REST OF ITS LIFE SPREADING BEAUTY AND JOY AS IT FLITS FROM ONE FLOWER TO THE NEXT. AND AS WE MOVE THROUGH OUR DAILY LIVES WHICH ARE FILLED WITH CHAOS AND CHALLENGE, IT WOULD DO WELL FOR US TO REMEMBER THAT EACH OF US HAS ONE OF THESE BEAUTIFUL WINGED CREATURES INSIDE OF US...JUST WAITING TO EMERGE FROM THE DARKNESS. AND, LIKE THE BUTTERFLY, WE NEED ONLY TO ENTER THE STILLNESS AND SOLITUDE, TO LOOK WITHIN OURSELVES. THERE WE WILL FIND THIS WISE INNER SELF WAITING TO TRANSFORM US.

T'OU-SHEN NIANG NIANG is the Chinese Goddess of smallpox. She is one of several deities of the "Ministry of Medicine"; the Chinese organized their deities in parallel with their own government structures. T'ou-shen's four sons were also part of the ministry: Pan Shen had rule over fatal smallpox, Chen Shen over measles, Sha Shen over scarlet fever and chicken pox, and Ma Shen over pockmarks. T'ou-shen herself was said to particularly enjoy causing smallpox in beautiful young children, and children wore paper masks to bed to trick her into ignoring them. T'ou-shen's name is also seen as DOUSHEN NIANG NIANG, DOUIZHEN NIANG NIANG, and TOU-SHEN NIANG NIANG.

STYX WAS THE NAME OF THE GODDESS WHO REPRESENTED THE RIVER, STYX, A CROSSROADS BETWEEN THE LAND OF THE LIVING AND THE LAND OF THE DEAD; IN FACT, SHE WAS THE ONLY FEMALE RIVER. HER RIVER WAS THE MOST HOLY AND SACRED, AND BY ITS NAME, EVEN THE GODS TOOK THEIR MOST SOLEMN OATHS. THIS WAS WHERE THE MORTAL MET THE WORLD OF THE IMMORTAL.

STYX WAS THE OLDEST DAUGHTER OF OCEANUS AND TETHYS; SHE WAS THE WIFE OF PALLAS. THEIR CHILDREN WERE ZELUS, NIKE, CRATOS, AND BIA...AND SHE WAS DARK, DANGEROUS, AND POWERFUL. SHE WAS AN ALLY OF ZEUS IN THE TITAN WARS AND BECAUSE OF THIS, WAS HONORED GREATLY BY THE OLYMPIANS. IT IS SAID THAT THE GODDESS HELD SPECIAL POWERS AND COULD BESTOW THE GIFT OF IMMORTALITY. IT IS ALSO SAID THAT SHE HAD THE POWER TO MAKE SOMEONE INVULNERABLE, AND SOME BELIEVE THAT THE GREAT ACHILLES WAS DIPPED INTO THE RIVER BY HIS MOTHER. SHE HELD HIM BY HIS HEEL, THE ONLY PART OF HIS BODY NOT SUBMERGED. HIS EXPOSED HEEL FROM THEN ONWARD BECAME KNOWN AS "ACHILLE'S HEEL", A METAPHOR FOR A WEAK SPOT.

AS THE "MOTHER" OF THE GODS, SHE IS, THEREFORE, THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGURE IN THE CELESTIAL WORLD. AND, AS THE "MOTHER", IT IS SHE WHO GRANTS WEALTH, SECURITY AND PROSPERITY. "ADITI" IS SOMETIMES ASSOCIATED WITH A COW AND HER MILK AND IS SOMETIMES DEPICTED IN THE GUISE OF A COW. SHE IS ALSO SAID TO POSSESS THE POWERS TO FREE THE ONE WHO PETITIONS HER FOR HELP IN CASE OF SICKNESS AND SUFFERING FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN AND IS,THEREFORE,CALLED THE SUPPORTER OF ALL CREATURES.

Some say that "Aditi" is always with us even though She cannot be seen, but, should an apocalypse occur, She will make Herself fully visible. It is then that She will gather and wrap all of Her children in Her eternal cloak and protect us for all of eternity.
