SHE WAS BORN FROM THE MOUTH OF "HAUMEA", THE EARTH MOTHER GODDESS AND "KANE"; SHE WAS THE SISTER OF" PELE", AND WHILE "PELE" HAD BEEN BORN IN FLAMES, "HI'IAKA" WAS BORN IN THE SHAPE OF A COSMIC EGG PRODUCED FROM "HAUMEA'S" MOUTH AND KEPT WARM IN "PELE'S" BOSOM UNTIL SHE BECAME A YOUNG BEAUTY. SHE IS THE PERSONIFICATION OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS AND RULES OVER THE HILLS, CLIFFS, AND CAVES AND IS AMONG THE SPIRITS WHO PRESIDE OVER THE "HULA. "

ACCORDING TO THE FAMOUS HAWAIIAN MYTH, "PELE" TRAVELED IN SPIRIT FORM TO THE ISLAND OF KAUAI TO WITNESS A DANCE PERFORMANCE, AND THERE SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH A LOCAL CHIEF NAMED "LOHIAU. TIME PASSED, AND WHEN "HI'IAKA" DIDN'T RETURN AFTER 40 DAYS HAD PASSED, PELE GREW SUSPICIOUS, AND FEELING BETRAYED, UNLEASHED A FLOOD OF LAVA DOWN THE MOUNTAIN AND INTO THE SPECIAL GROVE WHEN "HI'IAKA" SAW THE SMOLDERING TREES ENTOMBED IN LAVA, SHE FLUNG HERSELF INTO THE ARMS OF "LOHIAU." IN RETRIBUTION, "PELE" TRIED TO KILL THE PAIR BY ONCE AGAIN UNLEASHING ANOTHER EXPLOSIVE STREAM OF LAVA. "LOHIAIU, " BEING MORTAL, DIED, BUT "HI'IAKA", BECAUSE SHE WAS A GODDESS, DID NOT. HOWEVER, "HI'IAKA "REFUSES TO ACCEPT DEFEAT AND, ENTERS DEEP DOWN INTO THE ABYSS TO RESCUE HIM. OVERCOMING MANY OBSTACLES, AND AND REACHING FULL GODDESS STATUS, SHE FINDS "LOHIAU'S" SPIRIT AND, AFTER SPENDING MANY DAYS USING HERBAL MEDICATIONS AND MAGIC, SHE REUNITES HIS SPIRIT WITH HIS BODY, BRINGING HIM BACK TO LIFE. AND EACH TIME "PELE" DESTROYS HER LOVER, SHE REPEATEDLY RESURRECTS HIM. THUS, WHILE "PELE" IS THE MOST FAMOUS OF THE SEERS, "HI'IAKA "PREVAILS OVER HER FOR SHE HAS THE POWER TO HEAL.

And, to this day, each time lava spouts from a volcano, "Lehua" trees sprout shortly thereafter, in a constant cycle of death and regeneration.
