SERKET is an Egyptian scorpion Goddess, whose full name, SERKET HETYT, means "she who causes the throat to breathe". This is symbolic of the fact that she protected against venomous stings and bites, such as those from a scorpion, and could also be called upon to heal these stings, as she did with Isis's infant son Horus. Along with Isis, Nephthys, and Neith, Serket guards the coffins of the deceased. She is usually represented in human form, wearing a scorpion with a raised tail on her head. In almost all circumstances, the scorpion is not drawn completely-the claws or stinger are omitted to protect against their danger. Epithets for Serket include "LADY OF HEAVEN", "MISTRESS OF THE SACRED LAND", "MISTRESS OF THE BEAUTIFUL HOUSE", and "THE DIVINE MOTHER".
