"(THE RIVER SHANNON)"

THE RIVERS OF IRELAND BEAR THE NAMES OF THE GREAT GODDESS IN HER DIFFERENT GUISES. " SINANN", THE YELLOW HAIRED GODDESS OF THE TUATHA DE DANANN WAS THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE SEA GOD, "LIR." SHE WAS A IRISH RIVER GODDESS IN ANCIENT CELTIC MYTHOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH THE RIVER "SHANNON," THE LONGEST RIVER IN IRELAND WHICH WAS SOUGHT OUT FOR ITS HAZELNUTS OF WISDOM. THE HAZELNUT, WITH ITS ROUND HARD SHELL, IS A SYMBOL FOUND IN MANY FOLKTALES.

IN HER BEST KNOWN LEGEND, WARNED THAT SHE SHOULD NOT APPROACH THE WELL WHERE THE WISDOM IS HIDDEN, SHE TRAVELS TO "CONNLA'S WELL" ANYWAY IN SEARCH OF ESOTERIC KNOWLEDGE, BUT APPARENTLY VIOLATED PROTOCOL AND IS DENIED. THE WELL IN ITS ANGER RISES UP AND DROWNS HER, SWEEPING HER DOWN INTO THE SEA, THUS BIRTHING THE RIVER WHICH STILL CARRIES HER NAME.

"SINANN" WAS PARTICULARLY REVERED BY THE COASTAL TRIBE OF "CORCU BAISCIND", AN EARLY KINGDOM IN COUNTY CLARE BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED SHE COULD SLAY THE SEA MONSTERS. A SANCTUARY FOR THIS GODDESS EXISTED ON THE ISLAND OF "INIS-CATHAIG."
