SHE WAS MARRIED TO "INAR"I, THE GOD OF RICE. ONE DAY THE MOON GOD, TSUKUYOMI, BROTHER OF AMATERASU, THE SUN GODDESS, WAS SENT TO VISIT. "UKEMOCHI" PREPARED A FEAST BY FACING THE OCEAN AND THROWING UP VAST QUANTITIES OF FISH AND SEAWEED. THEN SHE FACED THE FOREST AND BOUNTIFUL GAME SPEWED OUT OF HER ANUS, FINALLY TURNING TO A RICE PADDY; SHE COUGHED UP A BOWL OF RICE. "TSUKUYOMI "WAS SO DISGUSTED AND INSULTED IN THE MANNER THAT HE HAD BEEN SERVED THAT HE KILLED HER. BUT EVEN IN HER DEATH, SHE PRODUCED THE CROPS THAT THE JAPANESE STILL SOW.... MILLET, RICE, WHEAT, AND BEANS SPRANG FORTH. HER EYEBROWS EVEN BECAME SILKWORMS.
THE FOODS WHICH SPROUTED FROM HER BODY ALL HOLD SIGNIFICANCE. "R"ICE IS KNOWN AS A SYMBOL OF HAPPINESS AND SUSTENANCE, AND "SEAWEED "REPRESENTS JOYOUSNESS. "FISH" SIGNIFIES ABUNDANCE, REPRESENTS WOMAN, AND ALSO STANDS FOR WISDOM. "WHEAT" REPRESENTS AGRICULTURE AND IN JAPAN, "BEANS", ARE SEEN AS DISPELLING EVIL SPIRITS AS WELL AS BEING A FOOD SOURCE.
BUT THAT IS NOT THE END OF THE MYTH. IT SEEMS THAT "AMATERASU" WAS SO ANGRY WITH HER BROTHER THAT SHE REFUSED TO SEE HIM EVER AGAIN...AND THIS IS WHY THE SUN AND MOON ARE NEVER IN THE SKY AT THE SAME TIME....THUS WHY DAY AND NIGHT EXIST.
