COCA WAS A SACRED DRUG TO THE INCANS AND WAS VIEWED AS POSSESSING A GODDESS-LIKE ESSENCE. IT WAS USED FOR MANY PURPOSES SUCH AS GROUND INTO MEDICINE OR CHEWED BEFORE LONG JOURNEYS TO MAKE THE JOURNEY EASIER. "MAMA COCA" WAS CONSIDERED A BENEVOLENT DEITY, A SACRED GODDESS WHO COULD BLESS HUMANS WITH HER POWER. SHE IS THE "MOTHER" OR "SPIRIT OF THE COCA PLANT. " SHE IS DEPICTED AS AN INDIAN WOMAN WEARING A A FEATHERED HEADDRESS AND HOLDING COCA LEAVES IN HER HAND. SHE REVERED AS THE DAUGHTER OF THE "EARTH MOTHER, PACHAMAMA", AND COCA WAS CONSIDERED A GIFT TO THE PEOPLE TO BE USED TO DRIVE EVIL FORCES FROM THEIR HOMES AND FIELDS. IT IS SAID THAT BEFORE THE COCA HARVEST, THE HARVESTER WOULD SLEEP WITH A WOMAN TO ENSURE THAT "MAMA COCA" WOULD BE IN A FAVORABLE MOOD.

ACCORDING TO LEGEND, "MAMA COCA" WAS ORIGINALLY A MORTAL WOMAN WHO TOOK ON MANY MALE LOVERS. WHEN THE LOVERS LEARNED OF EACH OTHER, THEY BECAME JEALOUS AND BEGAN TO ARGUE AMONGST EACH OTHER. EVENTUALLY, THEY TURNED THEIR ANGER ON HER, AND, ENRAGED, THEY RIPPED HER TO PIECES, AND IT IS SAID THAT THE FIRST COCA PLANT GREW FROM HER BLOOD. THEREAFTER, INCAN RITUAL AND RELIGION DECREED THAT MALES IN THE INCAN EMPIRE COULD ENJOY THE PLEASURES OF THE COCA LEAF ONLY HE BROUGHT A WOMAN TO ORGASM. AND, TO ENSURE A GOOD COCA HARVEST, THE INDIANS OF SOUTH AMERICA ARE SAID TO HAVE FASHIONED THE LEAVES OF COCA PLANTS INTO SMALL FIGURES THAT REPRESENTED THE GODDESS.
