"DEVANA "IS THE SLAVIC GODDESS OF THE HUNT; HER LONG NAME IS DZIEWANA. SHE IS FREQUENTLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE GREEK ARTEMIS AND THE ROMAN DIANA. AT ONE TIME, SHE WORSHIPPED THROUGHOUT EASTERN EUROPE AS THE MAIDEN GODDESS OF THE FOREST. SHE IS ALSO ASSOCIATED WITH THE RIVERS AND THE LAKES. SHE IS THE HARBINGER OF SPRING, THE ONE WHO INFLUENCES BOTH AGRICULTURE AND THE WEATHER.

HER SACRED ANIMAL IS THE MARE, AND THEY SAY SHE, HERSELF, IS WAS ONCE A GODDESS MARE. AS A LUNAR GODDESS, SHE IS RUNS THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS WITH THE WILD DOGS AND THE WOLVES. DEVANA IS THE INFINITE VIRGIN, AN TOTALLY INDEPENDENT DEITY, WHO, ALTHOUGH HAS MANY MATES, SETTLES WITH NONE OF THEM. SHE IS FREEDOM; SHE SIGNIFIES A WOMEN WITH SOMETHING WILD AND UNRULY INSIDE OF HER.

INHABITANTS OF THE BALKANS BOWED TO THE MISTRESS OF THE FOREST AND ITS CREATURES. HER TREES ARE THE HAZEL AND THE WILLOW. A DECORATED EFFIGY WAS PARADED WITH MUCH SINGING AND CELEBRATION WHEN THE WEATHER WAS WARM.
