"GLISPSA" IS THE NAVAJO GODDESS WHO INVENTED MEDICINE AND BROUGHT IT TO HER PEOPLE ALONG WITH THE SACRED CHANT OF BEAUTY AND HEALING. SOME SAY THAT SHE MAY HAVE BEEN A FORM OF" ESTSANATLEHI. GLISPSA "TAUGHT THEM THE WAYS OF MUSIC AND HEALING, THUS IMBUING THEM WITH THE POWERS OF THE SHAMANS.
AS THE LEGEND GOES, WHILE ON A LONG JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, SHE STOPPED FOR A DRINK AND THERE SHE MET THE "SNAKE PEOPLE" OF THE LOWER WORLD WHO, IN A DEEP PLACE BENEATH THE LAKE,TAUGHT HER THEIR SHAMANIC WAYS. THERE SHE LEARNED THE HEALING CHANT AND ITS RITUALS FROM HER LOVER. SHE EVENTUALLY RETURNED TO TEACH HER PEOPLE ALL THAT SHE HAD LEARNED.
BACK ON EARTH, SHE TRIED TO TEACH THE SONG OF BEAUTY TO HER BROTHER, BUT HE COULD NOT LEARN AS FAST AS SHE AND HAD TROUBLE REMEMBERING THE ELABORATELY BEAUTIFUL SONG. BY THE USE OF MAGIC SHE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO TEACH HIM; WHEN SHE RETURNED TO HER LOVER IN THE LOWER WORLD, THE NAVAJO WERE LEFT WITH THE GIFT OF HEALING."
