Mummu

Mummu Cover
Mummu vizier of primeval gods Apsu, the fresh water, and Tiamat, the salt water. An ancient Sumero-Babylonian craftsman-god, and personification of technical skill. Mummu is also referred to as "the deep" several times in Mythological Texts. In ancient Sumeran, the word mummu translates to "the one who has awoken". Deity ruler of "The Ancients", Mesopotamian purveyors of technical knowledge, mathematics and abstract concepts. In popular writing, Mummu is mentioned in Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! Trilogy as 'The Spirit of Pure Chaos'. Mummu is a Mesopotamian deity present in the Babylonian creation myth. Sometimes referred to as 'the son of Apsu and Tiamat', Mummu is the third god in the primordial cosmogenous divine trinity. As the third of the first gods Mummu symbolizes the mental world, or logos. Mummu appears also the Sumerian Myth of Zu where Imdugud, whose name is translated as 'flashing wind', steals the Tablets of Fate but in turn is defeated by Ningirsu. In their battle an arrow in midair is ordered to return to its 'mummu', which in this case meant the shaft's return to the living reed from which it was cut, the guts return to the animal's rump and finally the feathers to the bird's wings. Therefore in a larger magnitude, mummu is detransformation, the return to chaos, demanifacturing. Through the Second law of thermodynamics, the dissipation of energy from matter and its 'return' to its simplest common denominator, mummu can be understood as Entropy. Towards the middle of the Babylonian creation myth, Ea (a more powerful deity) locks Mummu and Apsu away, reversing the process of degeneration and thus creating the physical world.

Being Called To A Particular Deity

Being Called To A Particular Deity Cover
I recall someone talking about a feeling of being called to a given deity, and how to know this was for real, and how to go about making it Signed and Official(tm) and all that... I thought I'd give out with few (yeah, right)
words as to my own experiences this way.

I'm pretty much a believer in the notion that a person is best served by following their natural inclinations on some ways. I found my own Craft name this way -- I just sort of waited until I found the "right" name. I waited until I got a handle on what I was like at that time (it may change in the future) and at that point, saw the name as the proper noun that described what I was, the word for my inner nature.

It's not a name in any but the most basic sense -- a description of what I *am*.
It's no more a "chosen" name that an apple "chooses" to be called an apple.
It's simply the name we have for the thing.

Finding a deity figure is similar, and the one that fits you is often different from time to time. Don't look for one that you like and say, "I want to dedicate myself to that one." Look inside yourself and see what's there -- and don't lie or hide anything. Honesty is needed here. Know yourself, and then see if you can find a deity matchup for what you see. This is what I mean by seeing what your own natural inclinations are and then going with them.
Oftentimes, the deity will just sort of fall into place with no effort, like a dewdrop rolling off a leaf. It just finds the proper time and bango -- it happens. Very zen, actually. This is similar -- if you relax and just know yourself, the deity will fall into place with no effort. Well, enough effort to read books and research so that you'll be able to know him or her when you see them. But research isn't effort -- it's fun!

My own deities are a bit odd -- the moirae from the Mycenean/Greek pantheon are good, as is the Minoan god Kouros. (Never let it be said that your deity has to be the same gender!)

Anyway, the only advice I can give you is to know yourself and then when you see your deity you'll recognize him or her as the right one. Choosing one that isn't a good fit is a bad idea.

Satan Aka The Morning Star Prince Of Darkness Lord Of The Flies The Devil

Satan Aka The Morning Star Prince Of Darkness Lord Of The Flies The Devil Cover
He is the least popular of all angels, but an angel he is in many spiritual paths. He does God's will by brining misfortune and disaster to mankind. He himself points out in Job that it is easy to love a God who gives only good things.

So there too we get to see his role in testing man even up to death. He can be very subtle tempting man to do evil, but again much of humankind's own rotten inclinations have fell on his head.

The holier and more devout the person, the more ceaseless Satan's attempts to test them will be. He can overstep his limits and tested God himself by testing Jesus. But a simple utterance of the name of Jesus will send him fleeing. For to lean on God is the ultimate act of trust and self-denial.

He or a flunky will quite happily show up at the moment of death to snatch evil souls. His torments can be everlasting or for a repentance period, but are aimed at purging the soul of evil. Remember even in Hell it is God not the devil who reigns.

Just to make things confusing there are other views of him. Some Christians see him as the father of all evil, and death himself. Those who take a strong disliking to God and his church turn rebel and become Satanists. They truly believe in Satan, and obey the laws of their dark covens seriously.

The Church of Satan, on the other hand, believes in nothing at all, not even Satan. They just use him as an excuse to be anti-establishment.

Modern witches and pagans tend not to believe in him at all, as he looks strangely like Pan. Well, they had to demonize the old gods some way, didn't they?

Minor Greek Goddess Dione

Minor Greek Goddess Dione Cover
Dione in Greek mythology is a vague goddess presence who has her most concrete form in Book V of Homer's Iliad as the mother of Aphrodite: Aphrodite journeys to Dione's side after she has been wounded in battle while protecting her favorite son Aeneas. In this episode, Dione seems to be the equivalent of Rhea the Earth Mother, whom Homer also placed in Olympus. Dione's Indo-European name is really less a name than simply a title: the "Goddess", etymologically a female form of Zeus. Roman "Diana" has a similar etymology but is not otherwise connected with Dione. After the Iliad, Aphrodite herself was sometimes referred to as "Dionaea" and even "Dione", just "the goddess". At the very ancient oracle of Zeus at Dodona, Dione rather than Hera, was the goddess resorted to in the company of Zeus, as many surviving votive inscriptions show. Although Dione is not a Titan in Hesiod, but appears instead in his Theogony among the long list of Oceanids, Apollodorus includes her among the Titans (1.1.3 and 1.3.1).

HER SACRED NAME:

Isis is the most popular name today for the Egyptian Goddess "or "Isis is a Greek word and in the Greek period 332-30 BCE and the Roman period 30 BCE-395 AD it was pronounced " Ees-Ees ". We in the new world have anglicized the word pronouncing it " Eye-sis ". The definition for her name is throne or seat of power.

We are speaking her Sacred Name whether we use:

* Ancient Egyptian
" (Aw-sat)" (Ah-set)" (Aw-set),or" (Ah-st)
* Ancient Greek" (Ees-Ees)" (Aay-sis),or" (Ehees-ees)
* Coptic Egyptian" (Aay-see)or" (Aay-seh)
* Anglicized" (Eye-sis)

THE ISIS MYTHOLOGY" in original more likely" a goddess in Ancient Egyptian religious beliefs, whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. She was worshiped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the matron of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans, and the downtrodden, and she listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats, and rulers. Isis is the goddess of motherhood, magic and fertility.

The goddess Isis (the mother of Horus) was the first daughter of Geb, god of the Earth, and Nut, the goddess of the Overarching Sky, and was born on the fourth intercalary day. At some time Isis and Hathor had the same headdress. In later myths about Isis, she had a brother, Osiris, who became her husband, and she then was said to have conceived Horus. Isis was instrumental in the resurrection of Osiris when he was murdered by Set. Her magical skills restored his body to life after she gathered the body parts that had been strewn about the earth by Seth. This myth became very important in later Egyptian religious beliefs.

Isis is also known as protector of the dead and goddess of children from whom all beginnings arose. In later times, the Ancient Egyptians believed that the Nile River flooded every year because of her tears of sorrow for her dead husband, Osiris. This occurrence of his death and rebirth was relived each year through rituals. The worship of Isis eventually spread throughout the Greco-Roman world, continuing until the suppression of paganism in the Christian era.

Plutarch, a Greek scholar who lived from 46 A.D. to 120 A.D., wrote Isis and Osiris which is considered a main source about the very late myths about Isis. In it he writes of Isis, describing her as: "a goddess exceptionally wise and a lover of wisdom, to whom, as her name at least seems to indicate, knowledge and understanding are in the highest degree appropriate.." and that the statue of Athena (Plutarch says 'whom they believe to be Isis') in Sais carried the inscription "I am all that has been, and is, and shall be, and my robe no mortal has yet uncovered."

Minor Greek God Chaos

Posted by Unknown

Minor Greek God Chaos Cover
In Greek mythology, Chaos or Khaos is the primeval state of existence from which the first gods appeared. In other words, the dark void of space. It is made from a mixture of what the Ancient Greeks considered the four elements: earth, air, water and fire. For example, when a log is burned, the flames were attributed to the fire in it, the smoke the air in it, the water and grease that come from it were supposed to be the water, and the ashes left over were the earth.

Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, described Chaos as "rather a crude and indigested mass, a lifeless lump, unfashioned and unframed, of jarring seeds and justly Chaos named". From that, its meaning evolved into the modern familiar "complete disorder".

Chaos features three main characteristics:

* it is a bottomless gulf where anything falls endlessly. This radically contrasts with the Earth that emerges from it to offer a stable ground.
* it is a place without any possible orientation, where anything falls in every direction;
* it is a space that separates, that divides: after the Earth and the Sky parted, Chaos remains between both of them.

Theogonia

According to Hesiod's Theogonia (The origin of the Gods), Chaos was the nothingness out of which the first objects of existence appeared. These first beings, described as children of Chaos alone, were Gaia (the Earth), Tartarus (the Underworld), Nyx (the darkness of the night), Erebus (the darkness of the Underworld), and Eros (sexual love). From these beings and the first generation of beings created by them, Hesiod establishes the deities related to each element known to early Greeks, beginning with the primordial elements: the Earth, the starry Sky (Ouranos), and the Sea (Pontus).

Theogonia presents two ways to come to life: division (Gaia, Nyx) and mating. After Gaia, almost all deities brought to life by division are negative concepts (Death, Distress, Sarcasm, Deception, and so on) and for the most part are produced by the goddess Nyx. From this point on is set the model for reproduction, from the action of two entities, male and female, as it appears in the divine world in response to human society. So the first answer by the myth to the question "What is the cause of this?" becomes "This is the father and this is the mother".

Primal Chaos

In Ancient Greek cosmology, Chaos was the first thing to exist and the womb from which everything emerged. For Hesiod and the Olympian mythos, Chaos was the 'vast and dark' void from which the first deity, Gaia, emerged. In the Pelasgian creation myth, Eurynome ('goddess of everything') emerged from this Chaos and created the Cosmos from it[citation needed]. For Orphics, it was called the 'Womb of Darkness' from which the Cosmic Egg that contained the Universe emerged. It is sometimes conflated with 'Black Winged Night'.

The idea is also found in Mesopotamia and associated with Tiamat the 'Dragon' of Chaos, from whose dismembered body the world was formed.

Genesis refers to the earliest conditions of the Earth as "without form and void," a state similar to chaos.

Primal Chaos was sometimes said to be the true foundation of reality, particularly by philosophers such as Heraclitus and those trained in Orphic schools. It was the opposite of Platonism. It was also probably what Aristotle had in mind when he developed the concept of Prima Materia in his attempt to combine Platonism with the Presocraticism and Naturalism. It was a concept inherited by the theory of Alchemy.

Tu Di Gong Cover
Tu Di Gong, also known as Tu Di or Tu Gong, is an indigenous earth god worshipped in East Asia, whose roots stem from China. A popular deity, he is worshipped by Chinese folk religion worshippers and Taoists. A formal name for Tu Di Gong is simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: F'ud'e zh`engsh'en, meaning the earth god of wealth and merit. In China, every village had a shrine to Tu Di Gong. It was this deity who was in charge of administering the affairs of a particular village. In traditional times, village concerns were primarily agricultural or weather-related. This god was not all-powerful, but was a modest heavenly bureaucrat to whom individual villagers could turn in times of drought or famine. Today, he is still worshipped by most Chinese, with many housing small shrines with his image, commonly located under the main altar, or below the house door. Many worships make prayers to him for wealth and their well being. He is also traditionally worshipped before the burial of deceased persons to thank him for using his land to return their bodies to the earth. Commoners often called Tu Di Gong "Grandpa," which reflects his close relationship to the common people. Tu Di Gong is portrayed as an elderly man with a long white beard, a black or gold hat and a red or yellow robe, which signifies his position as a bureaucrat. He carries a wooden staff in his right hand and a golden ingot on the left.

Greek Goddess Eris

Posted by Unknown

Greek Goddess Eris Image
ERIS (pronounced EAR-iss) is the Greek Goddess of strife. According to most sources, she is the daughter of Nyx, Goddess of night, and Erebos, God of darkness, although Homer calls her the daughter of Zeus and Hera, twin sister to Ares, the God of war. Eris delights in causing trouble wherever she goes, and she is the last to leave the battlefield, soaking up all of the suffering that she has caused. It was an act of Eris that ended up causing the Trojan War--in revenge for not being invited to the marriage of Thetis, Goddess of the sea, and Peleus, a mortal, she cast a golden apple inscribed with the word "kallisti" ("for the fairest") among the guests. The apple was claimed by the three Goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, and they asked Zeus to decide which one of them it should belong to. Not wanting to get into the middle of that particular argument, Zeus gave the task to Paris, a mortal prince from Troy. Each of the Goddesses tried to bribe him--Hera with power over all other men, Athena with skill in war, and Aphrodite with the most beautiful woman in the world--and Paris chose Aphrodite. Unfortunately, the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen, was already married, and when Paris kidnapped her (with Aphrodite's help), the Trojan War began.

Eris is the mother of a whole host of evil spirits or Kakodaimones, including Lethe (forgetfulness), Limos (hunger), Ponos (labor), Dysnomia (lawlessness), Ate (ruin and recklessness), Horkos (oaths), the Algea (pain), the Amphilogiai (disputes), the Androktasiai (slaughter on the battlefield), the Hysminai (fights), the Makhai (battles), the Neikea (quarrels), the Phonoi (murder), and the Pseudologoi (lies). It was these Kakodaimones who inhabited the jar that Pandora later opened, releasing them into the world. Eris's name means "strife," and epithets used to describe her include HARD-HEARTED, ABHORRED, FRIGHTFUL, TERRIBLE, and DEADLY.

Greek Goddess Keto Image
KETO is the Greek Goddess of sea monsters and large sea creatures, such as whales and sharks. She is the daughter of Gaia, Goddess of the earth, and Pontos, God of the sea, and is the sister-wife of Phorkys, God of the dangers of the sea. As befits such fearsome parents, the children of Keto and Phorkys were truly horrors--the Gorgons (Medousa, Sthenno, and Euryale--winged sea demons with serpents for hair, whose gaze could turn a person or creature to stone); the Graiai (Pemphredo, Enyo, and Deino--three gray-skinned sea demons who shared a single eye and a single tooth between them); Ekhidna (a half-woman half-dragon sea monster); Skylla (a sea monster with six dog heads and twelve feet); and Ladon (the hundred-headed dragon that guarded the golden apples of the Hesperides). Keto's name, which means "sea monster," is also seen as CETO, and other names for her include LAMIA (shark), TRIENOS (three times), and KRATAIIS (of the rocks), also spelled KRATAEIS or CRATAEIS.

Greek Goddess Khaos

Greek Goddess Khaos Image
KHAOS is the Greek Goddess of the air. There are two schools of thought as to how she came into existence--either she was the first being (in the beginning, there was only chaos), or she is the daughter of Ananke and Khronos, two of the primeval Gods. In the first instance, Khaos created Erebos (God of darkness), Nyx (Goddess of the night), Aither (God of light), and Hemera (Goddess of the day). In the second, she is the sister of Erebos and Aither. Either way, Khaos represented the empty misty air in between the earth and the heavens. Her name, which means "the gap" or "the chasm," is also seen as KHAEOS, CHAOS, or CHAEUS.
