Goddess Quan Yin Image
"QUAN YIN'S" NAME MEANS "SHE WHO HEARS THE CRIES OF THE WORLD." SHE PERSONIFIES COMPASSION FOR ALL WHO CALL OUT TO HER IN NEED OF HER ASSISTANCE TO ERADICATE THE MISERY THEY MAY BE EXPERIENCING IN THEIR LIFE. SHE IS VENERATED BY MOST ASIAN RELIGIONS AS A SAVIOR AND THE GODDESS OF MERCY. SHE EMBODIES THE FEMALE PRINCIPLE AND IS USUALLY REPRESENTED AS A YOUNG FEMALE DEITY WHO HAS THE POWER TO ASSUME ANY FORM NECESSARY TO CARRY OUT HER VOW...WHICH IS TO LEAD ALL BEINGS OUT OF A LIFE OF SUFFERING AND INTO THEIR SPIRITUAL REALIZATION.

WORSHIPPED PRIMARILY BY WOMEN, QUAN YIN COMFORTS THE TROUBLED, THE SICK, THE LOST, THE SENILE AND THE UNFORTUNATE. HER POPULARITY HAS GROWN THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES TO THE EXTENT THAT SHE IS NOW REGARDED AS THE PROTECTOR OF SAILORS, FARMERS AND TRAVELERS. QUAN YIN IS SAID TO HEAR ALL PRAYERS AND HAS COMPASSION AND EMPATHY FOR HUMANKIND. SHE ALSO CARES FOR THE SOULS IN THE UNDERWORLD AND IS INVOKED DURING POST-BURIAL RITUALS TO FREE THE SOUL OF ITS PHYSICAL FROM AND THE TORMENTS OF PURGATORY.

THE FOLLOWING OLD CHINESE FAIRYTALE DEPICTS HOW SHE CAME TO BE AND HOW SHE EARNED HER THOUSAND ARMS AND EYES:

"IN CHINA DURING THE 7TH CENTURY A KING HAD THREE DAUGHTERS, AND THE GREATEST DESIRE OF HIS THIRD AND YOUNGEST DAUGHTER WAS TO BE A NUN, BUT THE KING WANTED HER TO MARRY. WHEN SHE PROTESTED, THE KING BECAME ANGRY AND FLEW INTO A RAGE, ORDERING HER TO SERVE THE FAMILY BY DOING THE MOST MENIAL OF TASKS, SUCH AS SCRUBBING CHAMBERPOTS AND GROWING VEGETABLES IN BARREN ROCKY GROUND. HE WAS SURE THAT SUCH TASKS WOULD HUMBLE HER AND MAKE HER CHANGE HER MIND AND FOLLOW HIS WISHES. BUT IT WAS NOT TO BE.

In fact, she was able to grow beautiful vegetables in the garden. When the king saw that his plan was foiled, he grew very angry and ordered her execution. Fortunately, the executioner was a kind-hearted man who devised a way to make the sword break into a thousand pieces, thus leaving the girl unharmed, but the king saw that the execution was not successful, and took matters into his own hands, slaying his own daughter.

"UPON THE HER ARRIVAL IN THE UNDERWORLD, THE FIRES OF HELL WERE PUT OUT. NOW, THE KING OF THE UNDERWORLD DID NOT LIKE THE CHANGES THAT SHE BROUGHT INTO HIS KINGDOM, SO HE RETURNED HER TO THE LAND OF THE LIVING, RIDING IN THE HEART OF A LOTUS BLOOM. WHEN SHE ARRIVED IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING, SHE MADE HER HOME ON THE TOP OF PUTUO, AN ISLAND IN THE SEA. SHE LIVED HERE FOR MANY YEARS HEALING THE SICK AND SAVING MARINERS FROM SHIPWRECK."

"EVENTUALLY, HER FATHER BECAME ILL, AND HE WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY THING THAT COULD HEAL HIM WAS THE EYES AND ARMS OF A COMPASSIONATE SOUL. UPON HEARING THIS, QUAN YIN WILLINGLY GAVE HER ARMS AND EYES SO THAT HE MIGHT BE HEALED. NOT KNOWING WHO SHE WAS, HE APPROACHED HER TO GIVE HIS THANKS. AS HE RECOGNIZED HER AS HIS DAUGHTER, AND UNDERSTOOD HER SACRIFICE, A CLOUD DESCENDED UPON HER. WHEN THE CLOUD WENT AWAY THE HOLES THAT WERE ONCE HER EYES AND ARMS HAD BEEN REPLACED BY A THOUSAND EYES AND ARMS.

There are temples throughout the world dedicated to this Her, and women in every country pay homage to Her and send Her their pleas for assistance or gratitude for coming to their aid. Often we find Her depicted holding a vase containing the waters of compassion, the lotus flower of enlightenment or the jewel of the three treasures She is also shown with dragons, which are known as the protectors of faith, keeping watch over temples and Heaven itself.

She is one of the Seven Lucky Gods or Shichi Fukujin, and the only female among them. Benzai-Ten is the patroness of geishas, musicians, and dancers. She went to the cave of the dragon, tamed and married him, and convinced him not to eat any more children. She is often pictured riding on her golden dragon, playing a biwa or mandolin. Other representations of her show her with eight arms--two hands are joined in prayer, while the others hold a sword, a bow, an arrow, a wheel, a key, and a jewel. The jewel has the power to grant wishes. Alternative names for Benzai-Ten include BENTEN, BENZAITEN, and BENZAI-TENNYO.

The Water Goddess

The Water Goddess Image
IN A TIME...LONG, LONG AGO, WATER COVERED THE EARTH; THERE WAS NO LAND. IT WAS A LONG TIME BEFORE MANKIND AND ALL OTHER LIVING THINGS EVOLVED FROM THE PRIMEVAL WATERS. WE NEED WATER TO SURVIVE. IT CAN TRICKLE AS A MOUNTAIN STREAM OR ROAR LIKE THE SOUNDS OF THE OCEAN'S TUMULTUOUS WAVES DURING A RAGING STORM. WE NEED WATER FOR ALL OF FERTILITY...THE LAND, THE CREATURES...AS WELL AS OURSELVES.

THE WATER GODDESS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THE GUARDIANS OF THE SPRINGS, THE WELLS, AND THE RIVERS. THE GREAT MOTHER IS THE OCEAN. THE WATER GODDESS PROVIDES US WITH WISDOM IN TIMES OF STRESS AND GRIEF OR WHEN WE ARE MOST IN NEED OF COMFORT AND SUPPORT. SHE IS THERE WHEN WE FIND OURSELVES AT THE CROSSROADS, AND SHE CAN REMIND US TO FLOW IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION...TO MARK OUR LIFE STAGES WITH RITUALS. IF WE FEEL AS IF LIFE IS CLOSING IN, AND WE ARE DROWNING, SHE CAN REMIND US THAT THE WATER SUPPORTS US; WE DO NOT NEED TO GO UNDER.

THE "APSARASES "(MOVING WATER) ARE HINDU CELESTIAL NYMPHS WHO CAME FORTH FROM THE WATERS; THEY GIVE SOLACE TO THE DEITIES AND SOULS OF THE DEAD WARRIORS. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL WITH THE GIFTS OF GRACE AND AND YOUTH...AND PROFICIENT IN THE ART OF DANCING. THEY ARE THE ESSENCE OF WATER AND SYMBOLIZE THE CLOUDS OR THE MISTS...THE NURTURING QUALITIES OF WATER, AND AS WATER, THEY HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THEIR FORMS AND CAN CHANGE THEMSELVES INTO BIRDS OR FISH WHENEVER THEY SEE FIT. THEY GIVE US THE GIFTS OF ENERGY TRANSFORMATION AND NURTURE US.

Greek Goddess Aphrodite

Posted by Unknown

Greek Goddess Aphrodite Image
APHRODITE (pronounced af-row-DIE-tee) is the Greek Goddess of sexual passion. She is often referred to as the Goddess of love, but it is not truly love that Aphrodite inspires. She is accompanied by her two sons, Eros (Love) and Himeros (Desire), as well as by the three Graces or Kharites and the Horai, Goddesses of the seasons. It was the Horai that first found Aphrodite, who was born from the sea foam which formed around the genitals of Ouranos, husband of Gaia, after he had been castrated by their son Kronos. Aphrodite is described as being the most beautiful of the Greek Goddesses, and rules over grace and beauty. In all, her realms include sex, desire, flirting, consummation of marriage, procreation, prostitution, impotence, merriment, love songs, peace, and the planet Venus.

Aphrodite had many lovers, both Gods and mortals, and many children. Her first love was the war God, Ares, but she ended up married to the deformed smith God, Hephaistos. Hephaistos was the son of Zeus and Hera, and Hera had cast him out of Mount Olympus, ashamed to have a deformed son. Hephaistos was raised to be a great smith, and he sent a golden throne to Hera, which bound her to it when she sat down. Zeus offered the hand of Aphrodite to whichever God could free Hera from the throne, and Aphrodite agreed, thinking that Ares would be strong enough. However, only Hephaistos could free Hera, and he married Aphrodite. She kept up an affair with Ares until they were caught by Hephaistos, who then divorced her. From then on, Aphrodite was known as the consort of Ares--love and war, always together.

In one myth, Zeus uses Aphrodite's own powers against her. Zeus had the ability to use any other God's powers for himself, and he was angry with Aphrodite for always causing him to feel passion for mortals. He made Aphrodite lust after a mortal man, Ankhises, and with him she had a son, Aeneas, who fought in the Trojan War and then went on to found Rome. Her other children include Deimos (God of fear, with Ares), Phobos (God of panic, with Ares), Hermaphroditos (God of hermaphrodites, with Hermes), and Priapos (God of garden fertility, with Dionysos).

Aphrodite's titles and epithets reflect her varied roles, and include:

Hindu Gods Shivthe Destroyer

Posted by Unknown in , , , , ,

Hindu Gods Shivthe Destroyer Image
Shiva (Sanskrit for "auspicous one") is one of the predominant Hindu deities. He is the Destroyer or Transformer of the Hindu trinity, also comprised of Brahma the Creator, and Vishnu the Preserver. He can also be known as Nataraja, the "Lord of Dancers", Sambhu "Benign", Samkara "Beneficent", Pasupati "Lord of Beasts", Mahesa "Great Lord" and Mahadeva "Great God", amongst others. He has possibly evolved from the older Vedic Rudra ("Howler"), Lord of the Hunt and of Storms.

He can either be depicted in an abstract form via the shiva lingam, a phallic symbol of the male creative energy, or in human form of a four-armed young man either deep in meditation or dancing the Cosmic Dance.

Perhaps the word "destroyer" is misleading, as destruction in this case leads to better things, clearing the way for the new, leaving by the wayside all that hinders and which is unhelpful or unhealthy. Much like the Death card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot, with death leading to rebirth.

His wife is Pavati (or Shakti), he is the father of Ganesha (remover of obstacles). He is indelibly linked with the Ganges River, when the Goddess Ganga fell to earth, he caught her in his hair, breaking her fall and allowing her to gentle trickle to the ground. He is often depicted with matted hair, piled on top of his head, pouring forth the waters of the Ganges.

One legend describes how Shiva travelled to the dense forests of South India, where there lived a large number of heretical sages. The sages argued amongst themselves, but eventually their ire became focussed upon Shiva. They conjured creatures to destroy him, firstly a tiger summoned from the sacrificial fires. Shiva simply hooked the fierce beast with his fingernail, skinned it and wrapped the hide around himself.

The sages tried again, this time their offerings brought forth a huge serpent. Shiva took the snake, and wrapped it around his neck, wearing it as a garland. Shiva began to dance.

The third and final attempt upon Shiva's life was to bring forth a monster in the form of malignant dwarf. Shiva pressed his foot against the dwarf and broke its back, leaving it prostrate and helpless upon the floor, and continued his dance.

Shiva Symbolism:

There are many symbols associated with Shiva, some of these are:-

Blue throat/skin - from a time when poison churned in the oceans, Shiva drank the poison and kept it in his throat, where it left a permanent stain.

Third Eye - representing wisdom and insight. This eye is often a source of a fierce cleansing fire, specifically focussing upon evil.

Cobra necklace and tiger skin - representing his mastery over the world's dangerous creatures (and evil), and also the power of destruction and recreation, as snakes are continually shedding their old and outgrown skins.

Trident - representing his powers of will, action and knowledge.

White Bull - the bull is his vehicle, and can represent power and ignorance, and in this context Shiva can be seen to exert his power and destroy ignorance.

Hour-glass drum - beating the rhythm of the universe, and of the dance.

Goddess Masaya Image
MASAYA is the Nicaraguan Goddess of volcanoes. She lives in the Underworld with Mictanteot, the God of the Underworld, and receives the souls of evil people when they die. Masaya is depicted as an old crone with black skin, drooping breasts, and white wispy hair, similar to the gases that rise from the volcano in Nicaragua that is named for her. The Chorotega people used to sacrifice virgins by throwing them into the volcano, hoping that the Goddess would provide divine oracles in return for the sacrifice. Masaya's name means "burning mountain."

WHEN A SOLDIER SAW BADB WASHING HIS OR HER WEAPONS IN A STREAM, HE OR SHE KNEW DEATH WAS NEAR.

SHE IS DESCRIBED IN THE "BOOK OF INVASIONS "AS ONE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF "ERNMAS" WHICH ALSO REFERS TO HER AS THE SISTER OF ANU, ERIU, BANBA, AND FOTLA. SHE BROUGHT DOWN A THREE DAY RAIN OF SORCERY, FIRE AND BLOOD ON THE HEADS OF THE FIR BOLGS. In the mythological account of the second battle of Mag Tuired, wherein the Tuatha De Danann defeated the Fomorians in battle, Badb is said to have recited the following prophecy of the end of the world:

SUMMER WITHOUT FLOWERS,
KINE WITHOUT MILK,
WOMEN WITHOUT MODESTY,
MEN WITHOUT VALOUR;
CAPTIVES WITHOUT A KING,
WOODS WITHOUT MAST,

sea without produce

SOME SOURCES SAY THAT BADB WAS A FRIEND AND HELPER OF THE IRISH FOLK HERO CUCHULAIN. WHEN CUCHULAIN WAS KILLED, BADB FLEW OVER HIS BODY IN THE FORM OF A CROW. THE FACT THAT CUCHULAIN DID NOT STRIKE OUT AT HER PROVED THAT HE WAS DEAD.

Goddess Sulis Image
SULIS is the Celtic Goddess of hot springs, worshipped particularly at Bath, which the Romans called Aquae Sulis (the waters of Sulis). Since her waters were seen as healing, Sulis became integrated with the Roman Goddess Minerva, Goddess of medicine. Minerva's role as Goddess of wisdom and justice was also brought over to Sulis-many inscriptions have been found which ask Sulis to intervene in disputes and punish guilty people. Sulis's name has been interpreted as either "good flooder" or "bright one", and is also seen as SUL, SULLA, SULEI, and SULIS MINERVA.
