In his description of Tartarus, Hesiod says further that Hemera "day", who is now Night's sister rather than daughter, left Tartarus just as Nyx entered it; when Hemera returned, Nyx left. This mirrors the portrayal of Ratri "night" in the Rig-Veda, where she works in close cooperation but also tension with her sister Ushas "dawn".

The god of the dead; he is a guardian and spirit guide. Mictlantecuhtli is ruler over Mictlan, the lowest underworld, the northern realm of the dead. Mictlantecuhtli's wife is Mictlancihuatl. He is associated with the spider, the owl and the bat.
To create life, Quetzalcoatl needed the bones from those that lived in the previous world, the Fourth Sun. First Mictlantecuhtli agreed but when Quetzalcoatl came to collect the bones Mictlantecuhtli changed his mind. Fortunately, Quetzalcoatl managed to escape. However, on his way back up he dropped some bones and broke some of them. This explains why humans have all different sizes.
Mictlantecuhtli is both the ruler of the tenth day, Itzcuintli (dog), and the tenth trecena, 1-Tecpatl (knife). He is Lord of the Day for days with number 6 ("chicuacen" in Nahuatl). He is the fifth Lord of the Night.

Lilith, (also know as Lilit), was a relic of an early rabbinical attempt to assimilate the Sumero-Babylonian Goddess Belit-ili, or Belili, to Jewish mythology. To the Canaanites, Lilith was Baalat, the "Divine Lady". Hebraic tradition said Adam married Lilith because he grew tired of mating with animals, a common custom of Middle-Eastern herdsmen, though the Old Testament declared it a sin. Moslems were insistent on the male-superior sexual position and apparently Lilith was not Moslem, disagreed with Adam and flew away to the Red Sea.
God sent angels to bring Lilith back, but she refused to return. She supposedly spent her time mating with "demons" and gave birth to "a hundred children a day". (Busy woman!) So God had to produce Eve as Lilith's more docile replacement. Lilith became the "Great Mother" of settled tribes who resisted invasions of nomadic herdsmen represented by Adam. Early Hebrews disliked the Great Mother who is said to have drank the blood of Abel after he was slain by Cain.
Lilith's Red Sea was another version of Kali Ma's Ocean of Blood, which gave birth to all things. There may have been a connection between Lilith and the Etuscan divinity Leinth, who had no face and who waited at the gate of the underworld along with Eita and Persipnei, (Hades and Persephone) to receive the souls of the dead. The underworld gate was a yoni and a lily, which had no face. Admission into the underworld was often mythologized as a sexual union. The lily or lilu, (lotus) was the Great Mother's flower - yoni, whose title formed Lilith's name.
The story of Lilith disappeared from the Bible, but her daughters, the lilim, haunted men for over a thousand years. The lilim were thought responsible for nocturnal emissions and the Jews still made amulets to keep away the lilim well into the Middle Ages. Greeks adopted the lilim and called them, Lamiae, Empusae, or Daughters of Hecate. Christians also adopted them and called them harlots of hell or succubae. They believed that Lilith laughed every time a Christian man has a wet dream. The Daughters of Lilith were supposedly very beautiful and presumed to be so expert at lovemaking that after an experience with one, a man couldn't be content with a mere mortal woman.
Babylonian or Sumerian Moon Goddess, patroness of Witches, demon Goddess to the Jews and Christians, Lilith represents primal feminine sexuality. Lilith is the protectress of all pregnant women and of children and mothers. She is the Goddess of wisdom, regeneration, enticing sorcery, erotic dreams and feminine allure.
As the early pages of Genesis give two accounts of the creation of women, legend has it that Lilith was Adam's first wife. Lilith, like Adam, was created from the dust of the Earth and had been one of the wives of Satan (or so the myth goes). She left her husband for Adam, but refused to be subservient and submissive to him, saying that they were both created from the same Earth and thus were equals. They quarreled, she left and was forced into exile.
Her name stems from a Semitic root meaning "night", and in the Talmud, she is portrayed as a long-haired demon of the night. She is considered by many to be the first liberated woman.

This Sumerian and Hebrew goddess, once honored for her wisdom, freedom, courage, playfulness, passion, pleasure and sexuality in pre-2300 B.C., was portrayed as a demon by Levite priests at the dawn of patriarchy. In Western tradition, she was the original partner of Adam, created equally together in the image of Elohin (a word for "god", having feminine and masculine linguistic roots). Her liberationist attitude and assertive behavior was threatening to the emerging patriarchs, and led to her expulsion from Eden to be replaced by the more subservient Eve.
Proudly holding the rod and ring representing Sumerian royal authority, Lilith strives to make modern life equal for all people. She inspires us not to judge our opposite sex, to respect them as our equal, and to nurture equality in our environment.
Customarily women break loose on leap days, asking men out or proposing marriage. But, as the Year 2002 is not a leap year, celebrate a new season instead. Tyr is the god of single combat, victory and heroic glory in Norse mythology, portrayed as a one-handed man. Corresponding names in other Germanic languages are Gothic Teiws, Old English Tiw and Old High German Ziu, all from Proto-Germanic.
Tyr also known as The Maimed God, was a lawful good greater deity of law and justice and part of The Triad. His dogma was primarily concerned with the punishment of wrong-doers, and the general furthering of law and good in the world. Not coincidentally, these values are among those held by most paladins, many of whom were more than likely to follow The Triad, as the patron of paladins Torm is one-third of the coalition.
The highly organized church of Tyr was strong in the more civilized lands of the Realms. They were known for never refusing service or aid to the faithful when they are in distress. To keep Tyr's favor, one must respect fallen enemies, never make sacrifice of a corpse, and keep one's alignment lawful good. Tyr considered slaying agents of evil to be honorable and worthy of the highest praise.

Pazuzu is often depicted as a combination of animal and human parts. He has the body of a man, the head of a lion or dog, eagle-like taloned feet, two pairs of wings, a scorpion's tail, and a serpentine penis. He is often depicted with his right hand pointing upward and his left hand downward. The position of the hands means respectively life and death (or creation and destruction). Although frequently regarded as a malevolent demon of the underworld, Pazuzu seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against pestilential winds (and particularly the south-west wind). Moreover, Pazuzu's association with Lamastu led to his employment as a force against her evil, forcing her back into the Underworld. Amulets of the demon Pazuzu (or simply of his head and face) were therefore often situated in houses or hung about the necks of pregnant women.

Zipacna was a son of Vucub Caquix (Seven Macaw) and Chimalmat. He and his brother, Cabrakan (Earthquake), were often considered demons. Zipacna, like his relatives, was said to be very arrogant and violent. Zipacna was characterized as a large caiman and often boasted to be the creator of the mountains. The Popol Vuh tells the story that one day Zipacna was basking on the beach when he was disturbed by the Four Hundred Boys (possibly patron deities of alcohol), who were attempting to construct a hut.
They had felled a large tree to use as the central supporting log, but were unable to lift it. Zipacna, being immensely strong, offered to carry the log for them, which he did. Although most translations of the Popol Vuh would seem to indicate this was done as a gesture of goodwill, it is generally agreed that Zipacna did so in a spirit of arrogance, mocking the boys for their inability to do so. The Four Hundred Boys decided it was not good that one man had such strength, and that Zipacna should be killed. They attempted to deceive Zipacna by asking him to dig a hole for their post, intending to thrust the massive column into the hole and kill him. Zipacna realized their deceit, however, and saved himself by surreptitiously digging a side tunnel and hiding inside it when the boys dropped the post in the hole.
To complete the illusion of his death, Zipacna cried out in pain, and later allowed ants to carry bits of his hair and trimmings from his nails out of the hole, satisfying the boys that he had been killed. On the third day after their apparent success, the Four Hundred Boys finished the construction of their hut and celebrated both its completion and Zipacna's death by preparing wine and engaging in a drunken revelry. Zipacna emerged from his hole after the boys had passed out, and with his massive strength he felled the column and caused the house to crash down upon the sleeping boys, killing the lot without a single survivor. After their death, the boys entered into the heavens as the open cluster known as the Pleiades. Hunahpu and Ixbalanque, the two divine Hero Twins, decided to exact revenge upon Zipacna for the death of the Four Hundred Boys; they also did so in a continuation of their quest to bring down the arrogant gods. The pair devised a scheme in which an elaborate fake crab was constructed and hid it deep in a canyon. They then sought out Zipacna along the beach, where he was hunting for his usual favourite food, crabs.
Zipacna was very hungry and had been unable to locate any crabs for his meal, and the pair informed him they had spotted a very large crab for the taking. They guided Zipacna to their trap, and being overcome with hunger, he was unable to see through the trick. Zipacna went in for the crab, and by means not specified by the Popol Vuh, a mountain was made to collapse or fall over on top of him, either killing him or turning him into stone. The account of Zipacna "entering" in search of the crab (which is specified to be a female), in particular his going in "on his back" on the second try, seems to be a parody of sexual intercourse. Indeed, it has been suggested by some interpretations of the Popol Vuh that it was Zipacna's lust and sexual appetite, not his hunger, that drove him to his doom.

The dominant role in determining the fate of people and nations belonged to Tengri, but natural forces yielded to Yer-Sub. Sometimes on Tengri's command, Yer-Sub punished people for their sins. But she was generally considered a benevolent Goddess. To appease Yer-Sub, sacrifices were made every spring in preparation for the cattle-breeding season and before planting crops. Sacrifices were also conducted in the autumn, after the completion of the harvest. During the times of the Khaganates, sacrifices to Yer-Sub had a nation-wide character. They were conducted near rivers and on the banks of lakes. A reddish horse was sacrificed with appeals for the fertility of cattle and crops, and for general well being. With the disintegration of the ancient Turkic states, the rituals to Yer-Sub began to take on distinct local forms. As in ancient times, they were conducted in the upper rivulets and on the shores of lakes. White rams were sacrificed and hung on a tree, under which a prayer was conducted. After the ritual, participants feasted and exchanged gifts.

Ruaumoko (also known as Ruamoko) is the youngest son of Rangi and Papa, god of volcanoes and seasons. He has never been born and remains inside his mother's womb. His movements are considered the cause of earthquakes. These earthquakes in turn are responsible for the change of seasons. Depending on the time of year, the earthquakes cause the warmth, or cold, of Mother Earth to come to the surface of the land, resulting in the warming, or cooling of the Earth. In other forms of Maori mythology, Ruaumoko was born and clung to Mother Papa's breast until he fell into the Underworld. There, when he walked he created earthquakes in the upper-world. He is also known as husband of Hine Titama', the goddess of death and a daughter of Tane.

ARTEMIS is the Greek Goddess of the hunt, forests, and childbirth. While she herself was a virgin Goddess, Artemis was closely associated with the birth process from a very young age--immediately after she was born, she assisted her mother Leto, Goddess of motherhood, in the birth of her twin brother, Apollo. The births were painless for Leto, and thereafter Artemis was called on by women in labor to ease their pain. She also watched over infants, both human and animal, until they were weaned. She then became the protector of female children, as Apollo was the protector of male children. In an apparent contradiction, it was also Artemis who brought sudden death to infants, girls, and women, just as Apollo did the same with boys and men, and while she protected infant animals, she was also the Goddess of hunting.
As a young girl, Artemis asked her father Zeus to grant her several wishes: that she could remain a virgin forever; that she have more names than her brother, Apollo (see her epithets below); that she could carry a bow and arrows; that she be attended by nymphs; that she should rule over the mountains; and that she have hounds to hunt with and deer to pull her chariot. Zeus granted all of her wishes, and also gave her dominion over harbors. Other areas of life that came to be ruled by Artemis include the dawn, frost, virginity, healing, the Amazons, and rabies.
Artemis was known for having quite a temper, and for guarding those she loved with great zeal. When Queen Niobe boasted that she was a better mother than Artemis and Apollo's mother Leto because she had seven times as many children, the twins shot down all of her children with their arrows. Aktaion, a hunter, was unfortunate enough to happen on Artemis while she was bathing. She turned him into a stag and caused his hounds to turn on and eat him.
Artemis was later seen as part of a trinity with Selene, Goddess of the moon, and Hekate, Goddess of magic. This may be due to the introduction to Greece of the Thracian Goddess Bendis, who ruled over wild animals, the moon, and magic. She was also identified with various Goddess from other parts of the world, including the Egyptian Bast and the Phrygian Kybele. It is through her identification with this last Goddess that the most famous temple to Artemis, the temple at Ephesus, came to be built. The statue, Lady of Ephesus, often identified as Artemis, is more likely to be a depiction of Kybele. The objects hanging around her neck have long been thought to be breasts or even bull testes, but they have recently been identified as representing amber beads.
Artemis' name means "uninjured" or "healthy," and since she is one of the oldest known and most widely worshipped of the Greek Goddesses, she had many epithets associated with her. Some were commonly used; others were used only in particular areas. In general, the epithets refer to her rule over animals or childbirth:
