Goddess Isis

Goddess Isis Cover
Egyptian Moon Goddess, Great Mother and Giver of Life. With Osiris, Isis and Horus (the divine child) made up a Holy Trinity. She is the Goddess of marriage, motherhood, fertility, magick, healing, reincarnation and divination, to name a few. Isis is the patroness of priestesses.

One myth has Isis poisoning the Sun God Ra, offering to save him only if he would reveal his secret name. At last, at the brink of destruction, Ra gives Isis his heart, with the secret name it held, and his two eyes (the Sun and the Moon).

Isis quells the poison and ends up with Ra's supreme power. In time the great Eye was passed along to her son Horus. Proclus mentions a statue of her which bore the inscription "I am that which is, has been and shall be. My veil no one has lifted." Hence, to lift the veil of Isis is to pierce the heart of a great mystery.

Sheela Na Gig

Sheela Na Gig Image
The "sheela na gig" is the crossroads where fertility and steriilty, birth and death meet. The "sheela na gig" is a genre of ancient Celtic images depicting a naked wizened crone holding her legs open as if she were giving birth, although she is clearly too old to do so. The "sheela na gig" stretches her parturient vagina open with her hands as if it were a gate, while looking the viewer in the eye.

Many traditional belief systems perceive the Earth Mother as the ultimate source of life and death. One returns to her after death only to emerge again. The "sheela na gig" invites you to contemplate these mysteries

* Create an altar of contemplation with a sheela na gig as the focal point.

* Combine images of fertility and death - include pomegranates, bones, seashells, and feathers.

* If one is brave or curious enough, visualize stepping through the gate the "sheela na gig" holds open.

The Dodonean Jupiter

Posted by Unknown

The Dodonean Jupiter Image
Jupiter was called Dodonean after the city of Dodona in Epirus. Near this city was a hill thickly covered with oak trees which from the most ancient times had been sacred to Jupiter. The grove was further venerated because dryads, fauns, satyrs, and nymphs were believed to dwell in its depths. From the ancient oaks and beeches were hung many chains of tiny bronze bells which tinkled day and night as the wind swayed the branches. Some assert that the celebrated talking dove of Dodona was in reality a woman, because in Thessaly both prophetesses and doves were called Peleiadas. It is supposed that the first temple of Dodona was erected by Deucalion and those who survived the great flood with him. For this reason the oracle a Dodona was considered the oldest in Greece.

To avoid their spells, one needed to disrobe beneath a tree and then put their garments back on backwards, PLACING YOUR SHOES ON THE OPPOSITE FEET, AND THE SIGN OF THE CROSS OFTEN WORKS.

The Feast Of Spring

Posted by Unknown

The Feast Of Spring Cover
Called Feriae Sementivae, this one or two day Roman festival was moveable, but generally began between January 24 and January 26. Sacred to Tellus, and Ceres, this festival was for the protection of seeds, either those sown the previous fall, or those to be sown in the spring. During Sementivae plowing oxen were decorated with garlands, and puppets or masks were hung from tree branches.

This is an excellent time to begin to think about planting a "Witch's Garden" and to do spellwork involving seeds. Spiritually and metaphysically, this is an optimum time to sow the internal seeds of what we hope to bring forth as the year unfolds.

Greek Nymph Maia

Greek Nymph Maia Cover
A Nymph is any member of a large class of female nature entities, sometimes bound to a particular location or landform. Nymphs often accompanied various gods and goddesses, and were the frequent target of lusty satyrs. Nymphs are frequently associated with the superior divinities, the huntress Artemis, the prophetic Apollo, the reveller and god of trees Dionysus, and with rustic gods such as Pan and Hermes.

The Greek nymph Maia was a daughter of the Titan Atlas and Pleione. Maia was one of the seven mountain nymphs known as Pleiades (Taygete, Elektra, Alkyone, Asterope, Kelaino, Maia, and Merope). Maia was the mother of Hermes (Roman Mercury) with Zeus and was associated, by the Romans, with the goddess of spring, Maia Maiestas.

From the Homeric Hymn to Hermes: "Muse, sing of Hermes, the son of Zeus and Maia, lord of Cyllene and Arcadia rich in flocks, the luck-bringing messenger of the immortals whom Maia bare, the rich-tressed nymph, when she was joined in love with Zeus, -- a shy goddess, for she avoided the company of the blessed gods, and lived within a deep, shady cave. There the son of Cronos used to lie with the rich-tressed nymph, unseen by deathless gods and mortal men, at dead of night while sweet sleep should hold white-armed Hera fast."

The Goddess Brigid

Posted by Unknown

The Goddess Brigid Cover
In the Scottish Highlands and Islands the rebirth of nature is celebrated on Candlemas, or St Bride's Day on 1 February. The tradition has weakened but the same feast has been celebrated since time immemorial. At its height, bonfires were lit on hilltops and there would be a festival with some young maid crowned with candles and honoured in Brigid's stead. Candles were lit in every window and homes in the Isles were decorated with early flowers and greenery. Bride's Crosses or Wheels were woven from corn and hung around the house.

Women would also make a crib with a mattress of corn and hay. They called it Bride's Bed and into it they tucked under a blanket a straw doll representing Bride, and beside her a wooden club. The crib was laid near the door surrounded by glowing candles. Food and drink were laid on the table and a decorated chair set by the hearth. Then just before they went to bed, the women of the house would call out three times: 'Bride is come, Bride is welcome!' Or they would go to the door and cry out into the night for Bride to enter their house.

Next morning everyone would search the ashes of the hearth, hoping to find an impression of Bride's club. If they did it was the sign that they would have prosperity and a good crop in the coming year. The weather that day was also watched closely because, as the old saying has it" Candlemas day be fair and bright, Winter will have another flight. " Candlemas day be shower and rain, Winter is gone and will not come again.

St Bride's day, wherever it is celebrated, is one of the clearest examples of a pagan festival being adopted by Christianity because even the name has not changed. St Bride or Brigid simply took over the mantle of the pagan Brigid, chief goddess of not only the ancient Irish but Celts across a wide swathe of western Europe. The name in Gaelic means 'bright flame'. In northern Britain she was called Brigantia, chief deity of the Brigantes tribe who were often led by warrior queens. Elsewhere she was called Brigit, Bride, Brighid, Brigandu and Berecynthia.

Whatever the precise spelling, Brigid was a triple goddess. Or, as it was sometimes put, there were three sisters all called Brigid who were the patronesses respectively of fertility, poetry and smithcraft.

As goddess of fertility Brigid was concerned equally with humans, animals and vegetation. Everywhere she walked, flowers sprang up under her feet. In her shrine it was always springtime and her herds never ran dry of milk. Brigid was the patroness of midwifery and of healing generally. She was particularly associated with sacred springs and holy wells, to which people would bring prayers and offerings to ward disease and barrenness. These wells were adopted by her Christian successor and many continue to be places of pilgrimage today.

As goddess of poetry, Brigid was keeper and dispenser of inspiration, the 'fire of the soul'. The symbolism of water and fire is combined in the Cauldron of Inspiration, of which she is the keeper. She invented the Ogham alphabet and it is said of both pagan and Christian Brigids that they were struck in their forehead on birth by a shaft of fire from heaven.

As goddess of earthly fire, the third Brigid was the patroness of metalcraft and all smith-work. In legendary battle her preferred weapons were the spear and arrow, and indeed one interpretation of her name is 'Flaming Arrow'.

Brigid's festival was one of the four main events in the ancient Celtic calendar because it marks the invisible rewakening of Nature within the cold earth. It was also sometimes called Oilmec, 'Ewe's Milk' because it opened the season of lambing.

On Brigid's Night the maiden goddess of fruitfulness and abundance replaces the sombre hag who took possession of the year at Samain (Hallowe'en or All Saints Night). The grim goddess of reckoning and mortality is replaced by the smiling one of hope, full of virginal gaiety, beauty and promise.

Arachne The Greek Goddess Who Became The First Spider

Posted by Unknown

Arachne The Greek Goddess Who Became The First Spider Image
Arachne was a young mortal woman who was was gifted in the art of weaving and her beautiful tapestries. Her work was so remarkable that many commented that she must have been trained by the patron goddess of weaving herself, Athena, a proud and talented goddess,, but Arachne scoffed at this and was angry that she had been placed in an inferior position to the goddess; she declared that she was actually a much better weaver than Athena and issued to a challenge to Athena to see who actually was the best.

Athena, was actually pretty annoyed with Arachne's claim, but decided give the mortal a chance to redeem herself, so she dressed herself up as an old woman and went to Arachne, warning her not to offend the gods...or she will bring their wrath down upon herself. But Arachne, feeling cocky, told the old woman that she should save her breath, that she welcomed the contest with Athena...and if she lost, she would suffer whatever punishment the goddess deemed fit...not thinking she would ever lose.

At that, the goddess revealed herself; the nymphs who had come to watch Arachne's weaving shrank back in fear. Arachne was not one to back down, though, for she had made her claim and was sticking to it. So, the contest began. Athena began to weave a design which depicted the glory of the gods and goddesses...namely, the scene of her contest with Poseidon for the city of Athens. The bystanders marveled at the goddess's work. For her part, Arachne created a tapestry showing the god's less honorable moments such as the showcasing of scenes of Zeus's various infidelities.

Athena was furious and tore the tapestry to pieces and destroyed the loom. Then, the goddess touched Arachne's forehead to make sure that she felt guilt for her actions, but although the mortal was ashamed, the guilt was far too deep within. So depressed was she that she hung herself. It was then that Athena took pity and brought her back to life, but not as a human...but as a spider to spin forever...a great weaver, but forever hanging from the threads. So, it is said that all spiders have been punished for Arachne's boasting, since they are required to live within their own webs...and since then, spiders have been called arachnids.

Only those with excessive pride and ambition challenge the gods and goddesses, and this pride usually leads to their downfall. This story teaches us that we, as women, have to be mindful of the risks we choose take in our lives, even the most talented of women, when we decide speak out against the established order, especially patriarchy. It reminds us the we should speak the truth, not of of pride, but should do so in the spirit of concern and love.
