TULASI is the Hindu Goddess of loyalty. She was once a woman named Vrinda, who was married to a man of low caste named Jalandhar. Vrinda was so devoted to her husband that he became stronger for it and could not be defeated in battle. One day, the God Vishnu took on the form of Vrinda's husband Jalandhar and tricked her into sleeping with him. Jalandhar lost his great strength and was subsequently killed, and Vrinda threw herself onto his funeral pyre. Vishnu, sorry for what he had done, turned Vrinda into the tulsi plant, a type of basil, and she became the Goddess Tulasi. The plant is considered to be very sacred, and there are certain rituals that must be used to take leaves from it. Tulasi's name means "the incomparable one," and other names, including those from her 108 name hymn, include the following:

TO THE AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINALS HER NAME IS "MOTHER EINGANA"; SHE THE CREATOR AND THE MOTHER OF ALL WATER, ANIMALS, AND HUMANS. SHE IS FERTILITY ITSELF, THE SOURCE OF ALL. SHE IS ALSO THE GODDESS OF DEATH AND HOLDS A SINEW THAT IS ATTACHED TO EVERY LIVING THING; IF SHE LETS GO OF ONE, THE ATTACHED CREATURE DIES, AND IF SHE HERSELF SHOULD DIE, EVERYTHING WOULD CEASE TO EXIST. THIS HUGE SNAKE GODDESS STILL LIVES, THEY SAY, IN THE "DREAMTIME" AND OCCASIONALLY RISES UP TO CREATE MORE LIFE.
She had no vagina, and as Her offspring grew inside Her, She swelled up. Eventually, tortured with the pregnancy, "Eingana" began to roll around and around. The god "Barraiya" saw her agony and speared Her near the anus so that birth could take place as all creatures now give birth.
"THE ROCKS REMAIN."
"THE EARTH REMAINS."
"I DIE AND PUT MY BONES IN THE CAVE OR THE EARTH."
"SOON, MY BONES WILL BECOME THE EARTH."
"THEN WILL MY SPIRIT RETURN TO MY LAND, MY MOTHER."

BABA YAGA is a Slavic Witch Goddess, the wild woman in her crone aspect. She lives on the edge of a forest in a hut that stands on chicken legs. She can fly at great speeds in a giant mortar, using the pestle to steer and sweeping away her tracks with a broom. Baba Yaga is usually portrayed as an ugly old woman with a big nose and long teeth, but her role is often more guiding than threatening. Her name shows this duality--"Baba" means "grandmother", but "Jaga" is likely derived from the Polish word "jedza", which means "nasty". Those who come to her of their own free will and with good intentions have nothing to fear. Those who cross her end up decorating her fence, made of the bones of her victims with their skulls along the top. Baba Yaga is known throughout Eastern Europe by various names including BABA JAGA, JEZIBABA, JAGA BABA, BABA ROGA, BABA JEDZA, BABA YAGA KOSTIANAYA NOGA ("bone-legs"), and JAGINAVNA.

Although not a traditional goddess, White Buffalo Calf Woman is well worth including in this blog. In Native American mythology, She is a sacred woman of supernatural origin; Her legend is very ancient, perhaps over 2,000 years old and has a prominent place in the spiritual practices of several Native American tribes. Her story is as follows:
It was so long ago that no one knows when, but all of the people were starving. The sun shined all the time, and everything was drying up, and each day, scouts were sent out but there was no game, and they returned night after night without food. The people were starving. It was a time of chaos.
One day the chief sent two of his warriors to hunt for game, and they decided to climb a high hill from which they would be able to see far across the plain. They had climbed about halfway up when they saw what seemed to be a person floating toward them. They knew at once that this must be a holy person, and when it drew closer, they saw that it was a beautiful young woman, more beautiful than any they had ever seen. She was dressed in a white buckskin which had been richly embroidered with porcupine quills, and She had red dots of paint on Her cheeks.
One of the young men desired Her, and He reached out to touch Her. A bolt of lightning crackled out of nowhere and burned the young man into a small pile of charred bones. The other warrior fell to his knees at once and began to pray. She told him who She was and explained that She would bring some good and holy things for his people from the nation of the buffalo. He was told to return to his people and have them erect a medicine lodge and She would come in four days.
And after four days, this She did...appearing to the people as a white buffalo calf descending on a cloud. As She stepped down, She once again became a beautiful woman. She spend four days with the people...teaching them the correct way to pray, the right words and the right gestures. She taught them the sacred songs, the ceremonies, and the traditional ways. And She gave them the White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe. She taught them to lift the pipe to the sky, to hold it toward the earth, and then in the four directions...and, in this way, the earth, sky, and all of the living things were to become one family, held together by the pipe. She taught them how to care for the land so they would no longer starve. And the world was filled with plants and animals and the people had much to eat.
And on the fourth day, the people saw Her walking off in the same direction from which She had come...leaving the pipe in their care....And, She promised that one day She would return for it and once again bring harmony to the world. The birth of a white buffalo calf would be a sign that it was near the time of Her return.
In 1997 a rare female white buffalo calf was born in Wisconsin, the first of four. This is a sign that the people have waited for...for so many generations. They say She is a sign of the Fifth World, the World of the Fifth Sun. There is once again hope for the renewal of life here on Earth, even as things appear their darkest. This is the time when we must strive for the balance of the male and the female energies for the power of the Creator can only be realized with the joining of the male and female energy in harmony and balance, as full and equal partners.

December! Already! The Winter Solstice is almost here. The days are growing shorter and the nights are growing longer. The air is getting crisp, cool. This is the month of the "Long Night's Moon", also called the "Cold Moon." As the days get shorter, we force ourselves to get through the darkness for eventually, we know we will see the light and the warmth again. The Druids also called this the "Oak Moon" because the Oak is a symbol of strength and eternity...and when the cold of winter tightened its grip on humankind, it was good to remember the mighty Oak's endurance...for in order to survive the harsh winter months, people had to reach deep within themselves to find the Oak's great strength.
The Winter Goddess is a part of the great cycle of the seasons. She represents a time of stillness and going within for this is a wonderful time for turning your attention to the home...and especially your ritual space. It is She who carries with Her the seeds of your dreams, dreams that must be nurtured through the darkness so they are ready to sprout as the plants in the spring. She is not about action; She is about nurturing yourself, stillness and listening to the wise woman within.
This is a great time to review your life. It is an opportunity to explore your successes and your failures of the past year. Ask yourself what you will need to let go of, which patterns of behavior no longer serve you. See if you can identify some of the things you have said or done which don't seem like the 'real you'. Take time to describe them in writing. Is there an aspect of your life that you need to change? Make a list of the thing you believe you do only because you 'have to' and not because you chose to do them. As yourself what you want to put your energy into and which direction you want to follow.

CALYPSO WAS UPSET THAT ZEUS WOULD ASK HER TO GIVE UP HER LOVER, AND SAYS THAT ALL OF THE OTHERS ARE JEALOUS OF HER AND HATE IT WHEN SHE SLEEPS WITH MORTAL MEN, BUT, AFTER MUCH ARGUING, SHE SAID SHE WOULD NOT REFUSE. SHE IS DOMINATED BY THE PATRIARCHAL GOD, ZEUS. SO, SHE ACCEPTED HER FATE, BUT IT WAS NOT IN HER POWER TO PROVIDE HIM WITH A RAFT OR A SHIP FOR HIS JOURNEY. INSTEAD SHE GAVE HIM THE TOOLS TO BUILD ONE HIMSELF.
AND WHEN IT CAME TIME FOR ODYSSEUS TO LEAVE, CALYPSO, IN A LOVING GESTURE, GAVE HIM PROVISIONS AND SENT HIM ON HIS WAY WITH A FAVORABLE WIND TO SPEED HIM ON HIS JOURNEY.

COATLICUE (pronounced koh-ah-TLEE-kway) is the Aztec Goddess of earth and fire, mother to all the Gods, the sun, the moon, and the stars. Her name means "the one with the skirt of serpents", and she is usually represented wearing her skirt made of snakes and a necklace of human skulls, hearts, and hands. Coatlicue is often referred to as a devouring mother, but this representation is not as negative as it sounds. She is the mother who gives us life and then accepts our bodies at death, "devouring" them in order to purify the soul. Coatlicue's unexpected pregnancy from a magical ball of feathers led to the uprising of her other children, led by her daughter Coyolxauhqui. Her son, Huitzilopochtli, sprang from her womb fully grown and armored, and killed his brothers and sister. Coatlicue was struck by grief, both for her children's treachery and the death of her beautiful daughter. She had Huitzilopochtli put Coyolxauhqui's head into the sky as the moon, so that she could see her daughter's face, even in death. Coatlicue is also known as TOCI ("grandmother"), TETEOINAN ("Mother of the Gods"), and by the epithets MOTHER GODDESS OF THE EARTH WHO GIVES BIRTH TO ALL CELESTIAL THINGS, GODDESS OF FIRE AND FERTILITY, GODDESS OF LIFE, DEATH AND REBIRTH, and MOTHER OF THE SOUTHERN STARS.

Since Kala Rau had just begun to swallow the elixir, his head was immortal but the rest of his body died. Trying to exact revenge, Kala Rau chases Ratih across the sky. Pachamama (Mama Pacha) is the Incan Earth Mother of Peru. As a goddess, She actually dates back to pre-Incan times and is considered the most revered goddess ind the Andes, but no stories of Her exploits remain in existence. She is considered the Mother who begets all life. She also oversees planting and harvesting and is responsible for the well-being of the plants and animals. She can also be seen as a large dragon as She represents the Andean Mountains. It is said that She sleeps beneath the mountains and may cause and earthquake if humanity fails to honor Her. The Andean people believe that a recent cluster of earthquakes in the area are the result of humanity's disregard for the Earth.
Pachamama is linked with Her husband, Inti, the sun god of the ancient Incas, Mama Cocha, the sea goddess, and the storm got Illampu. Together they form an integration of all four of the elements. She is still revered in the South American countries where the fruits of the earth, food from different regions, are offered to Her. She reminds us today of the need to acknowledge the power of the Earth and of the occasional unpredictable nature of Her elements.
