"HA PUU" IS THE HAWAIIAN DRAGON GODDESS AND THE GUARDIAN OF IMMORTALITY AND MAGIC. SHE WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL DRAGON GODS THAT HAD BEEN BROUGHT TO HAWAII AND SETTLED ON THE ISLAND OF OAHU. "HA PU'U" DIVINES HER MAGIC BY TALKING WITH THE SPIRITS OF THE DEAD, ANCESTRAL GUIDES ON THE PATH OF LIFE. ALONG WITH THE GODDESS "HAU-OLA", SHE GUARDS THE CLIFF AT THE END OF THE "NUUANU VALLEY." EVENTUALLY, THEY ASSUMED THE FORM OF LARGE STONES, AND IT WAS CUSTOMARY TO LEAVE FLOWERS AS OFFERINGS. MOTHERS PLACED THE DRIED UMBILICAL CORDS OF THEIR NEWBORN UNDER THE "HA PU'U'S" STONE TO PROTECT THEIR BABIES FROM EVIL: "O HAPUU, ACCEPT THE UMBILICAL CORD OF MY CHILD. GRANT HIM HEALTH AND EVERY GOOD."
UNFORTUNATELY THE STONES WERE DESTROYED BY A BULLDOZER IN 1953 WHEN A ROAD INTO THE VALLEY WAS BUILT.

"WAH"-"KAH"-"NEE, T"HE "DRIFTING MAIDEN" WAS BORN AMONG THE CHINOOK PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC COAST. HER HOME LIES ALONG THE COLUMBIA RIVER.ONE YEAR, THE LEGEND SAYS, THE CHINOOK PEOPLE WERE STRUCK WITH A TERRIBLE ENDLESS WINTER. THEY WERE COMPLETELY ICE-BOUND WITH NO RELIEF IN SIGHT, AND THE PEOPLE BEGAN TO FEAR FOR THEIR SURVIVAL FOR THEY WOULD SOON HAVE NO FOOD. A COUNCIL WAS CALLED, AND THE ELDERS RECALLED THAT ENDLESS WINTER RESULTED FROM THE KILLING OF A BIRD. EACH PERSON WAS ASKED IF HE OR SHE HAD BEEN GUILTY OF SUCH A CRIME. EVERYONE DENIED IT. THE CHILDREN POINTED TO "WAH"-"KAH"-"NEE", WHO CONFESSED THAT SHE HAD STRUCK A BIRD WITH A STONE, AND IT HAD DIED. THE CHINOOK DRESSED THE GIRL IN THE FINEST CLOTHES AND PLACED HER ON A BLOCK OF ICE AS AN OFFERING TO THE WINTER SPIRITS...AND SHE SLOWLY FROZE.
HER ATONEMENT APPEASED THE SPIRIT BEINGS, AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, THE ICE BEGAN TO MELT, AND THE RIVER BEGAN TO FLOW. SUMMER CAME WITH A RUSH. NOW THE PEOPLE COULD GATHER FOOD AGAIN. IT WAS NEARLY A YEAR LATER, WHEN THE WINTER RETURNED, THAT THE CHINOOK SAW THE BLOCK OF ICE CONTAINING THE GIRL'S BODY AND FETCHED IT TO SHORE. MIRACULOUSLY, THE GIRL REVIVED AND AFTERWARD LIVED AMONG THEM AS A SACRED BEING, ABLE TO WALK UNPROTECTED, EVEN BAREFOOT, IN THE COLDEST OF WINTER AND TO COMMUNICATE WITH ITS SPIRITS. FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE SHE SERVED AS A SHAMAN FOR HER PEOPLE.

ASTERIA (pronounced as-TARE-ee-uh) is the Greek Goddess of the oracles of the night, such as astrology and dream interpretation. She is the daughter of the Titans Phoebe and Koios, sister of Leto, Goddess of the oracles of the day. With Perses, God of destruction, she is the mother of Hekate, Goddess of crossroads and doorways, as well as the shadows of the night. Asteria was pursued by Zeus, but instead of falling victim to his embrace, she turned herself into a quail and flung herself into the sea. She was transformed into an island, at first called Asteria and then Ortygia (from the Greek "ortux", meaning "quail"). Even as an island, Asteria was not safe--Zeus's brother Poseidon pursued her, and the island moved around in the sea to escape him. When her sister Leto, pregnant with Zeus's children Apollo and Artemis, was pursued by a jealous Hera, Asteria called to her and offered her a safe place to give birth. When Leto landed on the island, the seabed rose up and anchored the island in place. Apollo later named the island Delos (meaning "brought to light"). Asteria's name means "starry."
