Greek Goddess Mnemosyne Image

Thou fill'st from the

wing`ed chalice of the soul

Thy lamp, O Memory,

fire-wing`ed to its goal.

--Dante Rossetti, inscribed on the frame of his painting, left

MNEMOSYNE (pronounced ni-MAW-sin-ee) is the Greek Goddess of memory. She is the daughter of Gaia and Ouranos, and therefore one of the Titans. With her nephew Zeus, she is the mother of the nine Muses. Zeus lay with Mnemosyne for nine nights in a row, and a year later she bore their nine daughters--Kalliope, Kleio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsikhore, Thalia, and Ourania. Mnemosyne is also said to have invented language, giving names to all things, although this is also said to have been the invention of Hermes, God of travel, trade, and language.

Mnemosyne, in her rule over memory, played an important role at an oracle in Boeotia. Before consulting the oracle, initiates first drank from the pool of Lethe, Goddess of forgetfulness, to clear their minds of all preconceptions. They then drank from the pool of Mnemosyne, so that they would remember what they learned from the oracle. Similarly, those who had crossed over into Hades were given the choice of whether to drink from a spring of Mnemosyne and remember their lives, or to drink from the pool of Lethe and forget. Mnemosyne's name, which means "memory," is also seen as MNAMOSYNA, and the epithets GOLDEN-ROBED, FAIR-ROBED, and GENTLE-EYED were used to describe her.

Goddess Aega Image
"AEGA (DAUGHTER OF THE SUN)" WAS A VERY BEAUTIFUL PRE-HELLENIC GODDESS FROM THE REGION THAT LATER BECAME GREECE. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF "GAIA," THE EARTH, AND "HELIOS", THE SUN. HER SISTERS ARE "CIRCE "AND "PASIPHAE, "AND TOGETHER THEY FORM A MANIFESTATION OF THE TRIPLE GODDESS. SHE WAS SAID TO BE VERY BEAUTIFUL AND OF SUCH DAZZLING BRIGHTNESS THAT THE TITANS, IN THEIR ATTACK ON MOUNT OLYMPUS, BECAME FRIGHTENED AND ASKED "GAIA "TO CONCEAL HER ON THE EARTH; HENCEFORTH, SHE CONFINED IN A CAVE IN GREECE.

HER NAME MEANS "GUST OF WIND", OR "GOAT", AND IN SOME TALES, SHE ACTUALLY TAKES THE FORM OF A GOAT, AND IT WAS IN THE FORM OF THE GOAT THAT SHE BECAME THE NURSE OF "ZEUS". DURING THE FIGHT WITH THE TITANS, "ZEUS" WAS COMMANDED BY AN ORACLE TO COVER HIMSELF WITH HER SKIN "(AEGIS). "HE OBEYED THE COMMAND AND RAISED "AEGA" AMONG THE STARS. IT IS CLEAR THAT IN SOME OF THESE STORIES "AEGIA "IS REGARDED AS A NYMPH, AND IN OTHERS AS A GOAT, THOUGH THE TWO IDEAS ARE NOT KEPT CLEARLY DISTINCT FROM EACH OTHER.

SHE IS ALSO A GODDESS OF DOMESTICATED ANIMALS. BY THE TIME ZEUS TOOK OVER AS KING OF HEAVEN, HE HAD A SACRED SHIELD WHICH WAS MADE OF HER SKIN. THE AEGIS WAS A SYMBOL OF GREAT POWER AND WAS FORMERLY WORN BY PRIESTESSES OF THE GODDESS" ATHENA, "BEFORE "ZEUS "TOOK POSSESSION OF IT. SHE ALSO APPEARED AS A CONCEALING STORM CLOUD THAT SURROUNDED "ZEUS'S" FAMOUS THUNDERBOLT. LATER SHE WAS PLACED IN THE SKY AS THE STAR "CAPELLA," THE LITTLE SHE GOAT.

"Now, pick a magic word."

"Umm-"

"Nope, umm's not good enough."

-Nora Roberts, Honest Illusions, 1993

I bellowed the magic words, "Uuuhhh, Uuuhhh."

-Raymond W. Baker, Capitalism's Achilles Heel, 2005Language has the power to reawaken vestiges of humankind's earliest communication-our ancient ancestors' savage cries of anger or love. All such cries were commands, "originally bound up with the act" and indeed inseparable to the primitive mind. When intoned without mockery, the primitive syllables of ooga-booga conjure the "primal oohs and ahs from cave men and women... in those early human settlements," or perhaps the mysterious, exotic powers of tribal elders (Helen Godgson and Patti Britton, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Sensual Massage, 2003).

Ooga-Booga has a variety of meanings, including:

o God; higher power

"Great Ooga-Booga, can't you hear me talkin' to ya?" -The Temptations, quoted in Miles to Go by Chris Murphy (2002)

Goddess Sengen Sama

Goddess Sengen Sama Image
SENGEN-SAMA is the Japanese Goddess of Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. She is married to Ninigi, God of rice and grandson of Amaterasu. Sengen-Sama became pregnant so soon after their wedding that Ninigi doubted that she had been faithful to him. Sengen-Sama built a hut with no doors, and said that when she delivered her child, she would set fire to the house. If the baby was not Ninigi's, then she and the child would die in the flames. As it turned out, the babies (she had twins) were Ninigi's children, and they and Sengen-Sama survived the fire. One of the children went on to be the grandfather to the first Emperor of Japan.

As Goddess of Mount Fuji, Sengen-Sama has a shrine at the top of the mountain, where her worshippers greet the rising sun, and she sometimes called ASAMA (dawn of good luck). As Goddess of cherry blossoms, she is also knows as KONOHANA (child flower) or KONOHANA-SAKUYA-HIME (the princess who makes the tree-blossom bloom).

Greek Goddess Demeter

Posted by Unknown

Greek Goddess Demeter Image
DEMETER (pronounced dih-MEE-tur) is the Greek Goddess of the earth, in particular the fruits of the earth. She is one of the children of Kronos and Rhea, sister of Zeus. The Roman Goddess Ceres is her equivalent. With Zeus, she had a daughter named Persephone, and it is in association with Persephone that Demeter is most well-known. Persephone was very lovely, and had been courted by the Gods Apollo, Ares, Hermes, and Hephaestus, but Demeter sent them all away. One day, while Persephone was out picking flowers with some nymphs, Hades, God of the Underworld, came up out of the earth and abducted her to be his bride. Demeter did not know what had happened to her daughter, and searched the world for her. In her despair, she neglected the earth, and all of the crops began to wither and die.

With the failure of the crops, people were going hungry and had nothing to sacrifice to the Gods. Zeus, knowing that Hades had taken Persephone, sent Hermes to him to bring her back to her mother. Before she left, Hades tricked her into eating six pomegranate seeds, tying her to the underworld for six months of the year. When Demeter was reunited with Persephone, she once again caused the earth to be fertile, but every year when Persephone goes back to the underworld, she lets the plants die again until her daughter's return.

Demeter is also at the center of what are known as the Eleusinian Mysteries. Though no one is entirely certain what was involved with the mysteries (they were never written down and some aspects were known only to initiates), it is known that there were two central celebrations-those of the Lesser Mysteries in the spring, and those of the Greater Mysteries in late summer. The Lesser Mysteries likely signified the return of Persephone from the underworld. The Greater Mysteries may have evolved from a myth pertaining to the time when Demeter was searching for her daughter. In her search, she stopped at the home of Keleus, the King of Eleusis. While she stayed, she taught one of Keleus's sons, Triptolemus, the art of agriculture, and it was he who spread it throughout the Greek world. For Keleus's other son, Demophon, Demeter had a very special gift. She intended to turn him into a God, and part of the process involved burning away his mortal soul so that he would be immortal. Every night, she placed him in a fire, until his mother saw this and interrupted the ritual, afraid for her son's life.

Demeter's name is likely derived from the words for "distribution" and "mother," which were suit her role as Goddess of the harvest. Epithets for her include:

DEMETER AGLAODOROS (bestower of splendid gifts)

Goddess Banba

Goddess Banba Image
BANBA (pronounced BAHN-va) is the Celtic Goddess of the spirit of Ireland. She is one of the Tuatha de Danaan, the people of the Goddess Danu. When the Milesians arrived in Ireland and conquered them, Banba and her two sisters, 'Eriu and Fodla, all asked that the island be named for them. 'Eriu won the request, but Banba's name continued to be used on occasion. Banba and her sisters are the daughters of Ernmas, a mother Goddess, who is also the mother of another triad of Goddesses--Badb, Macha, and Anu, also known as the Morrigan. The first triad represents the sovereignty of Ireland, while the second triad were Goddesses of war, and therefore represent the protection of Ireland. Banba's husband MacCuill was one of the last kings of the Tuatha de Danaan, along with his brothers MacCecht and MacGreine. Banba's name, which means "unplowed land," is also seen as BANBHA, BANDHA, B'aNBH'e, or B'aNUBH.

Goddess Of Laussel

Goddess Of Laussel Image
IN PREHISTORIC AND EARLY HISTORIC PERIODS OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, RELIGIONS EXISTED IN WHICH PEOPLE REVERED THEIR SUPREME CREATOR AS FEMALE, AND

"ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE PROVES THAT THE GODDESS RELIGION EXISTED AND FLOURISHED IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF THE PATRIARCHAL ABRAHAM, FIRST PROPHET OF THE MALE DEITY YAHWEH. I FIND IT ALL SO VERY FASCINATING. I AM SO IN AWE OF ANCIENT MAN."

THE GODDESS OF LAUSSEL WAS FOUND IN 1911 IN FRANCE AT THE ENTRANCE TO HER CEREMONIAL CAVE WHICH WAS BOTH A DWELLING PLACE AND A CEREMONIAL SITE. SHE IS AN EARTH MOTHER, AND IS REGARDED ONE THE EARLIEST KNOWN DEPICTION OF THE IDEA OF A DIETY FOR THE PURPOSE OF WORSHIP, THE VERY FIRST EXAMPLE OF THE DEIFICATION OF THE FEMININE PRINCIPLE, THE ORIGINAL GREAT MOTHER GODDESS. INDEED, THE GODDESS OF LAUSSEL IS DATED BETWEEN 22,000 AND 18,000 B.C.E.

SHE WAS PAINTED RED, THE COLOR OF MENSTRUATION....THE COLOR OF LIFE, BLOOD AND REBIRTH. IN HER LEFT HAND, SHE POINTS TO HER SWOLLEN BELLY, BUT HER LOOK IS TURNED TO HER RIGHT HAND WHICH SHE HOLDS A BISON HORN WHICH IS SHAPED LIKE A CRESCENT MOON...IMPLYING A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HER FERTILITY AND THE LUNAR PHASES OF THE MOON. THE HORN IS MARKED WITH 13 INCISIONS CALLING TO MIND THE 13 DAYS OF THE WAXING MOON AND THE 13 MOONS OF THE LUNAR YEAR. HER FACE IS FEATURELESS, ALLOWING SPACE FOR EACH ONE OF US TO EMBODY HER. WE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE SENSE OF WONDER THAT ANCIENT MAN MUST HAVE FELT AS THEY WATCHED THE "GREAT MOTHE"R GIVE BIRTH....THUS, CONFIRMING WITH EACH CHILD THE MAGIC AND MYSTERY OF LIFE ONGOING.

Dark Moon

Dark Moon Image
IN DAYS OF OLD, THE PEOPLE WORSHIPPED THE "MOON" AS A GODDESS, AND EACH OF "HER" LUNAR PHASES CORRESPONDED TO THE THREE PHASES OF A WOMANS LIFE:(NEW) MAIDEN, (FULL) MOTHER, AND (DARK) CRONE. THE DARK MOON APPEARS IN THE SKY DURING THE LAST THREE DAYS OF EVERY LUNAR CYCLE, AND DURING THIS TIME, THE NIGHT IS WITHOUT MOONLIGHT, BUT THE "DARK MOON" IS THERE; IT IS THE "DARK MOON" THAT PRESIDES OVER THE SKY UNTIL THE NEW 28-DAY CYCLE BEGINS, AND A "NEW MOON" IS READY TO APPEAR. SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE "DEAD MOON," THE "DARK MOON" DOESNT NECESSARILY REPRESENT DEATH. IT IS, HOWEVER, A MOST POWERFUL TIME. IT SEEMS TO LURE US TOWARD THE DEEPEST SELF, THE LONGINGS OF OUR SOUL.

WHEN THE "DARK MOON" APPEARS, IT BECOMES EASIER FOR US TO SHED UNNECESSARY EMOTIONAL BAGGAGE AND LET GO OF THOSE PEOPLE AND IDEAS THAT NO LONGER SERVE US OR ADD VALUE TO OUR LIFE. IT IS A TIME TO CLEANSE OURSELVES AND CREATE SPACE SO THAT WHAT IS NEW CAN ENTER. THE DARK OF THE "MOON" COMES WITH A "PULL INWARD", AND FOR MANY PEOPLE, THIS IS A TIME TO REST, REFLECT, AND REPLENISH THEIR ENERGY. IT IS AN EXCELLENT TIME FOR DEEP MEDITATION AND GOING WITHIN, UNDERSTANDING, AND GAINING KNOWLEDGE OF SELF. DURING THIS "MOON" CYCLE MANY HAVE REPORTED HAVING POWERFUL HEALING DREAMS, AND IT IS AT THIS TIME THAT MOST PEOPLE FEEL DRIVEN TO EXPLORE THEIR INTUITIVE ABILITIES, RETRIEVE PAST LIFE MEMORIES, OR DELVE MORE DEEPLY INTO THEIR PSYCHE.

THIS IS A TIME TO PERFORM SPELLS FOR PROPHECY, CURSING OR CHAOS, BUT OF COURSE, IF ONE CURSES ANOTHER, THEY SHALL REAP WHAT THEY HAVE SOWN. BLACK IS THE MAIN COLOR OF "CRONE" MAGIC. BLACK IS A COLOR OF WHICH MANY ARE FEARFUL FOR IT SIGNIFIES THE ABSENCE OF COLOR....YET, IT ENCOMPASSES ALL OF THE COLORS. IT DISPELS NEGATIVE ENERGY QUICKLY AND IS VERY GOOD FOR BANISHING SPELLS. IT IS THE COLOR OF "HECATE", THE "GODDESS OF THE CROSSROADS AND MAGIC. " SHE IS A DARK GODDESS WHO IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE NIGHT. AS A GODDESS WHO RETAINS ATTRIBUTES OF THE THREE ASPECTS OF THE TRIPLE GODDESS, "HEKATE" IS OFTEN SEEN IN TRIPLE FORM. SHE RULES NOT ONLY OVER DEATH AND THE UNDERWORLD, BUT OVER BIRTH AND REGENERATION, COMBINING FERTILITY WITH DEATH AS A POWER OF THE EARTH...A FEARED AND REVERED FIGURE.

One way to harness the energy of the "Dark Moon" is to perform a ritual. Begin by lighting a black candle and calling forth those different parts of your life that you feel you are ready to let go of. Through visualization, bind these parts together with light and imagine the bundle moving toward the candle. Watch as these old parts are devoured by the flames. Finally, let the candle burn out. Trust that what you've released has left you. You are now ready to welcome the new into your life.

Nusku

Posted by Unknown

Nusku Cover
Nusku was the name of the light and fire-god in Babylonia and Assyria, who is hardly to be distinguished, from a certain time on, from a god Girru - formerly Gibil. Nusku-Girru is the symbol of the heavenly as well as of the terrestrial fire. As the former he is the son of Anu, the god of heaven, but he is likewise associated with Enlil of Nippur as the god of the earth and regarded as his first-born son. A centre of his cult in Assyria was in Harran, where, because of the predominating character of the moon-cult, he is viewed as the son of the moongod Sin. Nusku-Girru is by the side of Ea, the god of water, the great purifier. It is he, therefore, who is called upon to cleanse the sick and suffering from disease, which, superinduced by the demons, was looked upon as a species of impurity affecting the body.

The fire-god is also viewed as the patron of the arts and the god of civilization in general, because of the natural association of all human progress with the discovery and use of fire. As among other nations, the fire-god was in the third instance looked upon as the protector of the family. He becomes the mediator between humanity and the gods, since it is through the fire on the altar that the offering is brought into the presence of the gods. While temples and sanctuaries to Nusku-Girru are found in Babylonia and Assyria, he is worshipped more in symbolical form than the other gods. For the very reason that his presence is common and universal he is not localized to the same extent as his fellow-deities, and, while always enumerated in a list of the great gods, his place in the systematized pantheon is more or less vague. The conceptions connected with Nusku are of distinctly popular origin, as is shown by his prominence in incantations, which represent the popular element in the cult, and it is significant that in the astro-theological system of the Babylonian priests Nusku-Girru is not assigned to any particular place in the heavens. This entry was originally from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Goddess Maat Image
MAAT is the Egyptian Goddess of order, truth, and justice. Her name was sometimes seen as MA'AT. She is the daughter of the Sun God Re, representing the order that he imposed on the cosmos. Kings often called themselves "Beloved of Maat", showing that they upheld her order and emphasizing their legitimacy. Judges were known as representatives of Maat, who herself played a role in the final judgment of the soul. In the "Hall of the Two Truths", the deceased's heart was weighed against Maat's Feather of Truth. If deemed acceptable, the soul would have a happy afterlife; if not, it was devoured by the crocodile Goddess Ammut.

"NINHURSAG" IS THE SUMARIAN GODDESS OF FERTILITY; HER DOMAIN IS THE EARTH AND ALL OF ITS CREATURES AND PLANTS. HER NAME MEANS "LADY OF THE MOUNTAIN". ENKI WAS AROUSED BY THE MOTHER GODDESS AND THEY MAKE LOVE, AND THROUGH THE UNION OF EARTH AND WATER, NINHURSAG BORE ENKI A DAUGHTER, NINSAR, MISTRESS OF VEGETATION; HER BIRTH REPRESENTS THE NEW PLANTS THAT GREW AFTER THE UNION OF HER PARENTS. HOWEVER, THE SEASON IS NOW ENDING AND NINHURSAG MUST DEPART FOR THE WINTER...LEAVING NINSAR AND ENKI. NINSAR IS SUBSEQUENTLY IMPREGNATED BY ENKI; SHE THEN BORE NINKURRA, GODDESS OF THE MOUNTAIN PASTURES; AND SHE, TOO, BEARS ENKI DAUGHTER, UTTU, THE SPIDER AND WEAVER OF PATTERNS OF LIFE'S DESIRES. BUT, UTTU WAS UNWILLING TO BEAR ENKI'S CHILD AND APPROACHED NINHURSAG FOR HELP; SHE WAS ADVISED TO BURY ENKI'S SEMEN IN THE GROUND. THERE IT GREW INTO EIGHT PLANTS WHICH ENKI PROCEEDED TO EAT.

THIS ENRAGED NINHURSAG WHO, SEEING HOW ENKI HAD NO RESPECT OR RESTRAINT, HAD HAD ENOUGH OF HER HUSBAND'S BETRAYALS. SHE CURSED HIM AND CAUSE EACH PLANT TO FESTER INTO A DISEASE IN THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF HIS BODY. THE OTHER GODS PLEADED WITH NINHURSAG TO TAKE THE CURSE OFF, FOR WITHOUT ENKI'S WATER, THE EARTH AND ITS PEOPLE WERE BEGINNING TO DIE. ENKI MUST SURVIVE BECAUSE LIFE DEPENDS ON HIM. SO, AFTER MUCH PLEADING ON THEIR PART, NINHURSAG GAVE IN AND, SINCE HE HAS EIGHT PAINS IN EIGHT DIFFERENT PARTS OF HIS BODY, CURED HIM BY TAKING THE PLANTS FROM HIS BODY AND GIVING BIRTH TO EIGHT HEALING GODDESSES. ENKI VOWS TO BE MORE MODEST IN HIS BEHAVIORS AND AND LEARNS A VALUABLE LESSON ABOUT BEING RESPONSIBLE.

"TAKEN LITERALLY, THE STORY OF INKI AND NINHURSAG IS ONE OF INCEST AND RAPE, BUT WE MUST REMEMBER. ENKI IS NOT AN IMMORAL CRIMINAL; IN FACT, HE IS NOT A REAL PERSON, BUT IS THE WATER WHILE NINHURSAG IS THE MOTHER EARTH, NOT A REAL WOMAN. MYTHS TEACH US HOW THE WORLD OPERATES, NOT THE WAY SOCIETY WANTS US TO BEHAVE. SO, IF WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE METAPHORS, WE WILL SEE THAT ENKI IS SIMPLY WATERING THE PLANTS. (NINSAR). NOW, NINSAR GROWS WITH CHILD, BUT IS IT NOT POSSIBLE THAT THIS SIMPLY MEANS THAT THE BIRTH OF NINKARA (PASTURES) IS SYMBOLIC OF A FIELD OF PLANTS IN THE SUMMER MONTHS? FOR, AS ENKI WATERED THE PLANTS, SOME OF IT SEEPED OVER INTO THE GROUND CREATING THE FLOWERING PASTURES. FOR, METAPHORICALLY, THIS BEAUTIFUL TALE IS ABOUT THE CHANGING OF THE SEASONS AND THE BEAUTY OF THE INTERACTION OF THE CREATIVE DUALITIES. "

Greek Sea Gods

Greek Sea Gods Image
The ancient Greeks had a large number of sea deities. The philosopher Plato once remarked that the Greek people were like frogs sitting around a pond-their many cities hugging close to the Mediterranean coastline from the Hellenic homeland to Asia Minor, Libya, Sicily and Southern Italy. It was natural, therefore, to venerate a rich variety of aquatic divinities. The range of Greek sea gods of the classical era range from primordial powers and an Olympian on the one hand, to heroized mortals, chthonic nymphs, trickster-figures, and monsters on the other.

Goddess Ceridwen

Goddess Ceridwen Image
CERIDWEN (pronounced KARE-id-wen) is the Celtic Goddess of wisdom and magic. She had three children, a beautiful maiden named Creirwy, an ugly but strong son named Morvran, and an extremely ugly son named Afagddu. Unfortunately, Afagddu had no skills or knowledge that would compensate for his looks. Ceridwen, as Goddess of magic, decided to brew a potion that would give her son the gifts of poetry and wisdom. The potion took a year and a day to brew, and Ceridwen employed a blind man to tend the fire under it and a boy named Gwion to stir it. Just as the potion was ready to be used, three drops splashed out of the cauldron and burned Gwion's thumb--he instinctively licked them off, thereby gaining the gifts of the potion. The rest of the potion was useless, and Ceridwen was so angry with Gwion that she chased him down. He tried to turn into a rabbit, but she turned into a dog. He turned into a fish, but she became an otter and followed him into the water. He turned into a bird, and she pursued him as a hawk. Finally, he turned himself into a grain of corn, hoping that she would not be able to distinguish him from the other grains. But, of course, Ceridwen immediately recognized Gwion and, turning herself into a hen, she ate him.

Ceridwen soon found that she was pregnant, and knew that her child would be Gwion reborn and that he would remember his previous life and retain all the knowledge that he had stolen from her son. She swore that she would kill him as soon as he was born, but the baby was so beautiful that she couldn't bring herself to do it. Instead, she wrapped him in a sealskin and set him out to sea. The baby was rescued by a Celtic prince named Elffin, who named him Taliesin. He grew up to be one of the greatest bards of Celtic history.

Ceridwen's name means "blessed poetry", and has several variations, including CARIDWEN, CEREDUIN, CERRIDU, CERRIDWEN, KERIDWEN, KERRIDWEN, KERITUEN, KERRITUEN, KERRITWEN, KYRRIDUEN, and KYRRITUEN.

Feast Of The Disir

Feast Of The Disir Image
The Disting and Ostara celebration is the time the Disir are the strongest. The veil between here and the world of the Disir is the thinnest. Kindle a fire and speak of their greatness. Remember, that evening they will hear you across the generations of your family and you will feel their strength and gifts.

Celebrate this special time with a Feast to the Disir. Spring is the time when the Goddesses go on the hunt; this is a time for the Ancestral Mothers to ride with Freya (or Frigga) leading the hunt! If you hear it, you are lucky; if you see, you are dead or going to be soon. Every time you speak their names and sing their deeds, they live forever.

WHO ARE THE DISIR?

The Disir are the ancestral mothers, the first of each of our ancestral line. There are around 400 votive altars raised all over Europe dedicated to ancestral mothers.

Freya is considered the 'Queen of the Disir' due to her fertility and magical qualities, but Frigga could very well fill this role. Frigga is the Goddess of fertility in the motherly aspect. She is mother Earth and the Patron Goddess of mothers and family. She assists in childbirth, as the Disir are said too.

The Disir are said to have these same qualities. "They are present at every persons birth, through their life and at their death." (Ancient Mothers, Winefred Hodge) It could also be argued that they fill the role of the Norns, being past, present and future. Another theory is that the Disir are the displaced Souls of the Ancestral Mothers. (Theedrich Yeat)

Upon our birth the ancient mothers enter our bodies with our first breath and guide us through our lives, and on our death, we release their spirit with our last breath for the next of kin. Freya or Frigga could very well be the First of our Line that our Folk have carried with us generation upon generation, hence the title Vanadis, Queen of the Disir.

The Disir are family specific, and an important aspect of both men's and women's souls. Each family has their ancestral mother's blood flowing in their veins. The Disir are the little voice inside of us that tells us to go forth or hold back. They are the woman's intuition that we inherit from our mothers, both ancient and modern.

The Disir are important to both men and women, since we all carry our mothers' line. The Gods and the Goddesses represent the collective unconscious Soul; the Disir (and the Einherjar) represent our conscious soul, our living soul. They aid us now in our waking state. They give us awareness of things we need during our conscious state: strength, intuition, inspiration, etc. They are important to us as the healing, seeing, wise female spirits that guide us in our daily lives, the gut instinct that you get when something feels so right or terribly wrong.

The Valkyries

The Valkyries Image
The VALKYRIES (pronounced VAL-kir-ees) are the Norse Goddesses who choose which warriors will go to Valhalla when they are slain. The name Valkyries means "choosers of the slain", and these beautiful women rode on winged horses to battlefields, where they would choose the bravest of the dead warriors and bring them to join Odin's army in Valhalla. The Valkyries wore armor and carried spears, and their armor gives off a glow that flashes through the northern sky as the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.
