Badb Irish Goddess Of War Image
"BADB "IS THE IRISH GODDESS OF WAR; SHE IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE "FURY, "AND IN OLD IRISH, HER NAME MEANS CROW." BADB" IS THE CRONE ASPECT OF THE TRINITY OF WAR GODDESSES WHICH INCLUDES HER SISTERS,THE "MORRIGAN" AND " MACHA". HER NAME MEANS "CROW "IN OLD IRISH.

MAINLY ASSOCIATED WITH DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, SHE IS ALSO THE KEEPER OF THE SACRED CAULDRON, CONTROLLING FATE, TIME, AND REBIRTH. SHE USED MAGIC TO CONFUSE AND FRIGHTEN WARRIORS IN BATTLE BY FLYING OVER THE BATTLEFIELD AND SHRIEKING WILDLY. THE BATTLEFIELD IS SOMETIMES CALLED THE "LAND OF BADB." SOLDIERS PRAYED TO HER, IMAGINING HER AS A GIGANTIC AND BEAUTIFUL YOUNG WOMAN, IMPLORING HER TO HELP THEM CROSS STREAMS AND OVERCOME THEIR ENEMIES. WHEN A SOLDIER SAW BADB WASHING HIS OR HER WEAPONS IN A STREAM, HE OR SHE KNEW DEATH WAS NEAR.

SHE IS DESCRIBED IN THE "BOOK OF INVASIONS "AS ONE OF THE DAUGHTERS OF "ERNMAS" WHICH ALSO REFERS TO HER AS THE SISTER OF ANU, ERIU, BANBA, AND FOTLA. SHE BROUGHT DOWN A THREE DAY RAIN OF SORCERY, FIRE AND BLOOD ON THE HEADS OF THE FIR BOLGS. In the mythological account of the second battle of Mag Tuired, wherein the Tuatha De Danann defeated the Fomorians in battle, Badb is said to have recited the following prophecy of the end of the world:

SUMMER WITHOUT FLOWERS,
KINE WITHOUT MILK,
WOMEN WITHOUT MODESTY,
MEN WITHOUT VALOUR;
CAPTIVES WITHOUT A KING,
WOODS WITHOUT MAST,

sea without produce

SOME SOURCES SAY THAT BADB WAS A FRIEND AND HELPER OF THE IRISH FOLK HERO CUCHULAIN. WHEN CUCHULAIN WAS KILLED, BADB FLEW OVER HIS BODY IN THE FORM OF A CROW. THE FACT THAT CUCHULAIN DID NOT STRIKE OUT AT HER PROVED THAT HE WAS DEAD.

Goddess Sulis Image
SULIS is the Celtic Goddess of hot springs, worshipped particularly at Bath, which the Romans called Aquae Sulis (the waters of Sulis). Since her waters were seen as healing, Sulis became integrated with the Roman Goddess Minerva, Goddess of medicine. Minerva's role as Goddess of wisdom and justice was also brought over to Sulis-many inscriptions have been found which ask Sulis to intervene in disputes and punish guilty people. Sulis's name has been interpreted as either "good flooder" or "bright one", and is also seen as SUL, SULLA, SULEI, and SULIS MINERVA.
