RAVOLA is the Malagasy Goddess of domesticated animals. She is one of the Vazimba, who are considered the original inhabitants of Madagascar and the ancestors of the Malagasy. The Vazimba were deified by the Malagasy, and are invoked in many situations. Ravola's sister, Rasoalao, also figures in Malagasy myth with her husband Rapeto.

HESTIA is the Greek Goddess of the hearth, specifically the fire that burns therein. She was the first child born to Rhea and Kronos and the first to be swallowed by her father, who was trying to avoid the prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him. When his last son, Zeus, finally freed his siblings from their father, Hestia was the last to be spit back out, and she is therefore referred to as both the oldest and the youngest of the siblings. In recognition of this, she was offered both the first and last of all sacrifices.

Hestia rules over fires sacred and mundane, from the fire of the temple at Delphi to the public hearth of the city to the private hearth in every home. Her fire was never allowed to die out, and people swore oaths over the flames. Whenever a new village was settled, the central fire was started from Hestia's fire in the inhabitants' original home town. When two people married and moved into their own home, the mother of the bride brought them fire from her hearth, inviting Hestia into the new home.

Hestia also tended the hearth fires of Zeus on Mount Olympus, and since she never roamed far, there are few myths in existence about her. Both Poseidon and Apollo tried to court her, but she would not have them, and swore an oath on the head of Zeus to remain a virgin Goddess. She is often tied in worship with Hermes, the Messenger of the Gods and protector of travelers. Hermes was symbolized by a pillar at the door of the home, and Hestia by the fire within. Between them, they kept the home and family safe and secure. One of Homer's hymns to Hestia shows this partnership:

Hestia, in the high dwellings of all, both deathless gods and men who walk on earth, you have gained an everlasting abode and highest honour: glorious is your portion and your right. For without you mortals hold no banquet And you, slayer of Argus [Hermes], Son of Zeus and Maia, messenger of the blessed gods, bearer of the golden rod, giver of good, be favourable and help us, you and Hestia, the worshipful and dear. Come and dwell in this glorious house in friendship together; for you two, well knowing the noble actions of men, aid on their wisdom and their strength. Hail, Daughter of Kronos, and you also, Hermes, bearer of the golden rod! Now I will remember you and another song also.

WHEN A CAT CURLS UP WITH ITS HEAD TOUCHING ITS TAIL, IT FORMS A CIRCLE...THE SYMBOL OF ETERNITY... THE SYMBOL OF THE GODDESS IN WHATEVER FORM SHE HAS CHOSEN. BAST BEGAN HER LIFE AS APROTECTOR GODDESS OF LOWER EGYPT. SHE WAS AS A FIERCE LIONESS; HER NAME IS GIVEN TO MEAN "DEVOURER". SHE IS USUALLY SHOWN IN ART AS A CAT-HEADED WOMAN CARRYING A BASKET OR AS A WHOLE CAT. QUITE OFTEN THOUGH, THEY ARE KITTENS AT HER FEET IN THE PICTURES. A WOMAN WHO WANTED CHILDREN SOMETIMES WORE AN AMULET SHOWING THE GODDESS WITH KITTENS, THE NUMBER OF WHICH INDICATED HER OWN DESIRED NUMBER OF CHILDREN.

"BAST" IS THE PROTECTOR OF CATS, WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THERE ARE MANY LEGENDS CONNECTED HER AS AN ANCIENT SUN AND WAR GODDESS... ONE SAYING THAT SHE ACCOMPANIED THE SUN GOD", RA'S", BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS ON ITS DAILY JOURNEY THROUGH THE SKY, AND AT NIGHT, SHE FOUGHT HIS WITH ENEMY, THE SERPENT APEP. AS A PROTECTOR, SHE WAS SEEN AS A DEFENDER OF THE PHARAOH.

HER NAME TRANSLATES AS "FEMALE OF THE OINTMENT JAR"; HENCE SHE WOULD GRADUALLY BECOME THE GODDESS OF PERFUMES AND OILS. IN CONNECTION WITH THIS, WHEN "ANUBIS" BECAME THE GOD OF EMBALMING, "BAST", AS GODDESS OF OINTMENT, CAME TO BE REGARDED AS HIS WIFE.

BAST WAS A HAPPY AND BENIGN DEITY WHO BROUGHT GOOD FORTUNE, MUSIC, DANCE AND JOY TO ALL. STATUES OF CATS ARE COMMONLY PASSED OFF AS FACSIMILES OF "BAST", BUT THIS IS INCORRECT. THE CAT WAS INDEED HER SACRED ANIMAL AND THE PEOPLE OF THE TIME TENDED TO SEE THE GODDESS IN EVERY CAT THAT WALKED PAST, BUT HER ORIGINAL DEPICTION WAS AS A ROYAL LADY OR A PRIESTESS WITH A CAT'S HEAD. THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS CELEBRATED HER FEAST DAY ON OCTOBER 31ST WITH LOTS OF MERRY MAKING, MUSIC, DANCING IN THE STREETS AND DRINKING WITH FRIENDS. SADLY, IN MODERN TIMES, "BAST" AND HER FEAST DAY ARE OVERLOOKED, BUT YOU COULD PERHAPS SAY THAT "HALLOWEEN" WAS ORIGINALLY CELEBRATED AS THE "FEAST OF BAST."

FENG PO-PO is the Chinese Goddess of the wind. She is usually depicted as a crone, riding through the clouds on the back of a tiger. She carries a bag of winds, which she releases as needed. Feng Po-po's name, which means "madam wind," is also seen as FENG P'O-P'O.
