"GABIJA" is the Lithuanian Goddess of fire and hearth. She is the protector of home and family, the provider of happiness and fertility. She is also a Goddess of corn and other grains. and her cult has survived for thousands of years. She has been variously depicted as a cat, a stork, or a winged woman clothed in red. Her name means 'to cover, to protect' which refers to the practice of the mistress of the home as She vigilantly banks the fire at night so that it will neither go out...nor spread from the hearth. Her Sacred fire was believed to be the connection with the world of the ancestors who continued to live in the hearth flame.

Care was taken not to offend the Goddess, and Her fire was greatly respected and cared for as if it were a living creature.Fire had to be laid to bed could only be extinguished with cold, clean water, and while it was being lit, everyone had to be silent and not turn away....even if someone were to their name. People would feed the Goddess by offering bread and salt which was sprinkled on the fire to make it crackle while repeating the words, Sacred Gabija be satisfied." Sometimes a bowl of clean water would be left near the hearth so that the Goddess could wash Herself. This was done while repeating the words, "Bathe and rest, oh Fiery One."

It was said that, if angry, She would "go for a walk" burning down the house, and there is plenty if folklore that describes ill fate of those who offended Gabija by stomping their feet on, spitting on, or urinating on fire.

THE SACRED CULT OF GABIJA (THE FIRE GODDESS) WITH ITS PREHISTORIC ROOTS HAS SURVIVED TO OUR PRESENT DAY. THE HEARTH FIRE IS THE FOCUS OF ALL FAMILY RITUALS AND RITES OF PASSAGE WITH THE HEAD WOMAN OR A MALE ELDER PRESIDING. LITHUANIANS BEGIN EACH RITUAL INVOKING HER PRESENCE SINCE WITHOUT HER, THE RITES WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE. GABIJA ACCEPTS THE SACRIFICES AND ACTS AS A MEDIATOR, CARRYING THEIR PRAYERS TO THE OTHER GODS.GABIJA IS THE VITAL CENTER IF EACH TEMPLE, GROVE AND HOME. SHE IS THE FLAMING SYMBOL OF ALL THAT IS TRULY ALIVE ON THAT PLANET AND A DEITY AND POWER TO BE TREATED WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT.
