ASHNAN IS BOTH AN AGRICULTURAL AND A DOMESTIC GODDESS. SHE IS VIEWED AS THE PROTECTOR AND NOURISHER OF THE FERTILE LANDS AND PROVIDES HER PEOPLE WITH GRAINS AND VEGETATION. SHE IS USUALLY DEPICTED AS A YOUNG MAIDEN WITH EARS OF CORN SPROUTING FROM HER SHOULDERS.
ANOTHER OF HER ROLES WAS TO PROVIDE FOOD AND CLOTHING TO THE GODS OF MESOPOTAMIA, BUT WHEN THE HEAVENLY CREATURES WERE FOUND UNABLE TO USE HER PRODUCTS, HUMANKIND WAS CREATED TO TAKE THEIR PLACE.
