"HEAL MY BODY,"
"HEAL MY SOUL,"
"HEAL MY SPIRIT,"
"GODDESS SULIS"
"HELP ME TO HEAL MYSELF."

"SULIS" (EYE OR SEEING) WAS THE LOCAL GODDESS OF THE SPRINGS AT WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS BATH IN SOUTHWEST ENGLAND. THE MINERAL-LADEN WATERS WERE BELIEVED TO BE A SOURCE OF HEALING. THE LEGEND IS THAT KING BLADUD BATHED IN THE SPRING AND WAS CURED OF LEPROSY. AS A RESULT, THE SPRINGS BECAME CELEBRATED NOT ONLY IN THE BRITISH ISLES, BUT ALL THROUGHOUT EUROPE.

THOUGH SHE IS A SOLAR DIETY, SHE RULES THE ELEMENT OF WATER. SULIS WAS A GODDESS OF HEALING AND PROPHESY; THE FACT THAT SHE PRESIDED OVER HOT WATER BUBBLING FROM THE UNDERGROUND MEANT THAT SHE WAS IMMEDIATELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MYSTERIES OF THE OTHERWORLD. SHE RULES OVER THE PURIFICATION AND HEALING OF THE MIND, THE BODY, AND THE SPIRIT.

THE ROMANS CONSIDERED SULIS TO BE A LOCAL VERSON OF THEIR OWN DEITY, MINERVA, AND BUILT A TEMPLE COMPLEX AROUND THE SPRINGS WHICH CAN STILL BE SEEN AND EXPLORED. PERMANENT FIRES WERE LIT AROUND HER SHRINE, AND THE WATER WAS ALWAYS WARM. SMALL VOTIVE IMAGES OF THE DEVOTEES BODIES WERE PLACED IN THE WATER AND ACCOMPANIED BY PRAYERS FOR HEALING.

LEAD AND PEWTER 'CURSE TABLETS' HAVE ALSO BEEN FOUND AROUND THE AREA OF AND IN THE SPRINGS. THESE WERE THIN SHEETS OF METAL WHICH WERE INSCRIBED AND FOLDED AND THEN DIPPED INTO THE WATERS; THEY CONTAINED APPEALS TO THE GODDESS FOR VENGEANCE AGAINST THOSE WHO HAD COMMITTED SOME CRIME AGAINST THE PETITIONER...USUALLY SOME SORT OF THEFT FROM THE BATHHOUSE ITSELF. THIS IMPLIES THAT SULIS ALSO DEALT IN DIVINE JUSTICE, PERHAPS PERCEIVED AS HEALING EXTERNAL WRONGS AS WELL AS AILMENTS OF THE BODY.
