MAAT is the Egyptian Goddess of order, truth, and justice. Her name was sometimes seen as MA'AT. She is the daughter of the Sun God Re, representing the order that he imposed on the cosmos. Kings often called themselves "Beloved of Maat", showing that they upheld her order and emphasizing their legitimacy. Judges were known as representatives of Maat, who herself played a role in the final judgment of the soul. In the "Hall of the Two Truths", the deceased's heart was weighed against Maat's Feather of Truth. If deemed acceptable, the soul would have a happy afterlife; if not, it was devoured by the crocodile Goddess Ammut.
