Goddess Asherah Image
ASHERAH is the Semitic Goddess of fertility, the moon, and the sea. She, along with her sisters Astarte and Anat, was known by various names throughout the ancient Mesopotamian area, and is sometimes confused with her sisters. Asherah appears in the Hebrew Bible as the consort of Yahweh and is represented by a sacred tree or pole.

In the Ugaritic tradition, Asherah is consort of the God El, the father of all the Gods. She is mother of the gracious Gods, the 70 sons of El. She is often depicted either standing with or riding a lion, and she is usually naked, symbolic of her role as fertility Goddess.

Her many names come from the fact that she was worshipped throughout the ancient Near East. She is known as ATHIRAT or ATIRAT in Ugaritic; ASHRATUM or ASHRATU in Akkadian; and ASHERDU, ASHERTU, ASERDU, or ASERTU in Hittite. Other names and epithets include:

Goddess Hina Pukuai Image
HINA-PUKU'AI is the Hawaiian Goddess of food plants. She is one of the many forms of the Great Goddess Hina, and her name means "Hina gathering vegetable food." Hina-puku'ai had a special gourd in which she kept food. One day, she was lured away from her home by a local chief, and she spilled all the food out of her gourd. The food flew up to the sky and became the moon and the stars. Hawaiians believe that the 'elepaio bird is one of the forms of Hina-puku'ai. This bird is very important in canoe building--it only lands on trees that are filled with insects and would therefore not make good canoes.

Goddess Maenads Image
IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY, THE "MAENADS "WERE THE FEMALE FOLLOWERS OF DIONYSUS. THEIR NAME MEANS "RAVING ONES." THEY WERE OFTEN PORTRAYED AS INSPIRED BY HIM TO ECSTATIC FRENZY, THROUGH A COMBINATION OF DANCING AND DRUNKENNESS. DURING THESE RITUALS, THEY DRESSED IN FAWN SKINS AND CARRIED THE THYRUS...A LONG STICK WITH IVORY OR VINE LEAVES; THEY LOST ALL SELF-CONTROL, BEGAN SHOUTING EXCITEDLY, AND ENGAGED IN UNCONTROLLED SEXUAL BEHAVIOR.

IT HAS ALSO BEEN SAID THAT THE MAENADS WERE ABLE TO PERFORM MIRACLES FOR WHEREVER THEY STRUCK THE GROUND WITH THEIR THYRSOS, THERE CAME FORTH A STREAM OF WINE, AND WHEREVER THEY SCRATCHED THE EARTH WITH THEIR FINGERS THERE CAME FORTH STREAMS OF MILK. IT WAS BELIEVED THAT THE MAENADS COULD DO SUCH THINGS BECAUSE THEY WERE POSSESSED AND NOT IN THEIR SENSES.

THEY WERE ALSO KNOWN TO BE VERY CRUEL AGAINST THE ENEMIES OF THE DIONYSUS, AND BEING POSSESSED BY THE UNUSUAL STRENGTH THAT CAME FROM A DRUNKEN FRENZY, THEY COULD TEAR APART WHOEVER STEPPED IN THEIR WAY. THEY WERE SAID TO BE ABLE TO ROUT ENTIRE ARMIES; THEY COULD NOT BE WOUNDED BY ENEMY WEAPONS, BUT THEY INFLICTED CASUALTIES ON THEIR OPPONENTS. IT IS ALSO SAID THAT THEY COULD CARRY HEAVY OBJECTS ON THEIR SHOULDERS WITHOUT HOLDING THEM WITH BOUNDS AND THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO CARRY FIRE ON THEIR LOCKS WITHOUT BEING BURNED. THEY COULD FALL UPON TOWNS AND TURN EVERYTHING UPSIDE DOWN FOR THERE WAS NO ONE COULD RESIST THEM.
