Santa Muerte is a sacred figure venerated in Mexico, probably a syncretism between Mesoamerican and Catholic beliefs. The name literally translates to "Saint Death. " Mexican culture since the pre-Columbian era has maintained a certain reverence towards death, which can be seen in the widespread Mexican celebration of the syncretic Day of the Dead. Catholic elements of that celebration include the use of skeletons to remind people of their mortality. Santa Muerte generally appears as a skeletal figure, clad in a long robe and carrying one or more objects, usually a scythe and a globe. The robe is most often white, but images of the figure vary widely from person to person and according to the rite being performed or the petition of the devotee. As the cult of Santa Muerte was clandestine until recently, most prayers and other rites are done privately in the home. However, for the past ten years or so, worship has become more public, especially in Mexico City. The cult is condemned by the Catholic Church in Mexico, but it is firmly entrenched among Mexico's lower classes and criminal worlds. The number of believers in Santa Muerte has grown over the past ten to twenty years, to approximately two million followers and has crossed the border into Mexican American communities in the United States.

ARTIO (pronounced ARE-tee-oh) is the Gaulish Goddess of wild animals, especially bears. She was worshipped in Switzerland, where a bronze statue of her feeding a bear calls her DEAE ARTIONI. She is also associated with fertility and fruition, since breeding bears spend their hibernation pregnant and give birth when they rise in the spring.

Nyx in Hesiod's Theogony - Night is born of Chaos; her offspring are many, and telling. With her brother Erebus, Night gives birth to Aether ("atmosphere") and Hemera ("day"). Later, on her own, Night gives birth to Momus "blame", Ponos "toil", Moros "fate", Thanatos "death", Hypnos "sleep", the Oneiroi "the tribe of dreams", the Hesperides, the Keres and Fates, Nemesis, Apate "deception", Philotes "friendship", Geras "age", and Eris "strife".

In his description of Tartarus, Hesiod says further that Hemera "day", who is now Night's sister rather than daughter, left Tartarus just as Nyx entered it; when Hemera returned, Nyx left. This mirrors the portrayal of Ratri "night" in the Rig-Veda, where she works in close cooperation but also tension with her sister Ushas "dawn".

THERE ARE A FEW DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS AS TO WHO SHE WAS, BUT SHE WAS A GODDESS NATIVE TO THE PEOPLE OF ITALY. ONE ACCOUNT SAYS THAT SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF THE LARES (HOUSEHOLD GODS OR ANCESTRAL SPIRITS) AND THE "ARVAL "BROTHERS (THE 12 PRIESTS OF THE FIELD GODS). OTHERS SAY SHE IS A GODDESS OF SEXUALITY IN WHOSE WORSHIP SACRED PROSTITUTION PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE. ACCORDING TO ROMAN MYTH, SHE WAS A LOOSE WOMAN AND A MISTRESS OF "HERCULES.".. ROME'S MOST BEAUTIFUL PROSTITUTE. SHE MARRIED THE WEALTHY "TARUTIUS" AND AFTER HIS DEATH SHE DONATED HIS MONEY TO THE ROMAN PEOPLE...AND FOR THAT, THE PEOPLE REVERED AND CELEBRATED HER IN THE FESTIVAL OF THE" LARENTALIA" ON DECEMBER 23...THE LAST DAY OF THE "SATURNALIA. GODDESS? SACRED PROSTITUTE? SHE WOLF? WHATEVER MAY BE THOUGHT OF THE CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS SURROUNDING "ACCA LAURENTIA," THUS MUCH SEEMS CLEAR...SHE WAS OF ETRUSCAN ORIGIN AND CONNECTED WITH THE WORSHIP OF THE "LARES", FROM WHICH HER NAME "LARENTIA" ITSELF SEEMS TO BE DERIVED. THIS APPEARS FURTHER FROM THE NUMBER OF HER SONS, WHICH ANSWERS TO THAT OF THE TWELVE COUNTRY "LARES, "AND FROM THE CIRCUMSTANCE THAT THE DAY SACRED TO HER WAS FOLLOWED BY ONE SACRED TO THE LARES.
